The Panellists will offer their personal perspectives on what added value they believe a wellbeing framework can provide. Questions for the panel will include: - How does a focus on protecting and promoting human wellbeing challenge existing ideas of development? - What connections do you see between human wellbeing, international development and philanthropy? - What positive examples can you give of successful efforts to protect and promote the wellbeing of men, women and children? 11:00 12:30 Obstacles to and Drivers of Human Wellbeing, Breakout rooms in Frati The session will be conducted in small working groups where participants map the range of challenges that they regard as threats to human wellbeing and also identify positive responses. 2 Wednesday, November 9 MODULE ONE, DAY 1 14:30 16:00 Panel Discussion: How is the Development and Philanthropy Eco-system Evolving?, Frati Chapel Evidence from the Bellagio Initiative s Global Dialogues and Commissioned Papers emphasizes that international development organisations and philanthropies now operate in a more complex and diverse global ecosystem of organizations and institutions. The Panel will provide a stimulating introduction to the ways that the ecosystem has evolved and what new actors, powers and values have emerged and must be taken into account in development efforts. The discussion will focus on promoting human wellbeing through organizations and institutions that provide governance, rules and regulation, and incentives. Questions for the panel will include: - What do you perceive to be the most significant changes in the global development ecosystem? - What are the key and emergent issues? - In what ways might these changes be positive or negative for the promotion of human wellbeing? - Where is the system functioning well and where is it falling short? 3 Thursday, November 10 MODULE ONE, DAY 2 09:00 09:30 Morning Plenary, Frati Chapel 09:30 10:30 Wellbeing: Systemic Barriers, What s Not Working, What s Missing?, Breakout rooms in Frati Participants will brainstorm ideas on where recent development efforts have failed to make adequate progress and whether there are deeper obstacles that result in a failure to influence key areas of wellbeing. 11:00 12:30 Systemic Barriers to Wellbeing: Why?, Breakout rooms in Frati The session will be conducted in small working groups where participants focus on one of the examples highlighted in the preceding session. They will seek to deepen the analysis of why past international development and philanthropic efforts have failed to make headway on these issues. The session will focus on why these efforts have not been effectively integrated into global and national development. 14:00 15:00 Informal discussion / free time 15:00 16:00 Innovations in Promoting Human Wellbeing: What?, Breakout rooms in Frati There are creative responses to the challenges to promoting wellbeing from the political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental domains. But not all efforts are successful. Which innovations contribute to protecting and promoting human wellbeing? What criteria can we use to identify successful innovations? 4 Friday, November 11 MODULE ONE, DAY 3 09:00 10:30 Morning Plenary and Recap Session, Frati Chapel Discussion of the previous day s sessions on the systemic barriers to human wellbeing and innovations for the promotion of wellbeing. The group will discuss what will need to change in international development and philanthropy in order to integrate learning, overcome barriers and build on innovations. 11:00 12:30 Connections within the Development and Philanthropy Ecosystem, Breakout rooms in Frati How do we get there? These group sessions will chart possible actions and partnerships that would enable the development and philanthropy system to better protect and promote human wellbeing in its complexity. 14:30 16:00 Wellbeing, Growth and Equity, Breakout rooms in Frati Exploring the relationship between wellbeing, growth and equity. This session will focus on an innovative analytical tool that looks at potential policy, private sector and civil society levers to achieve greater levels of wellbeing and more equitable growth. 16:30 18:00 Closing Plenary: Innovations and Interventions, Frati Chapel This closing session will collate the lessons learned and key insights from the previous sessions.
