6 6 Physiological Approaches to Ion Channel Biology. A laboratory and lecture course addressing electrophysiological approaches to the study of ion channels. Taught by Drs. Michael Hausser and Nelson Spruston. June 5 25, 2002, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York. SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE As a Master s student (09/99 to 10/01) I was involved in the laboratory training and supervision of approximately one dozen undergraduate Honour s thesis and summer students. My responsibilities included training the students in animal (rat) care (handling, restraint techniques, injection procedures), the execution and interpretation of behavioral procedures designed to assess learning, memory, nociception and motor behaviors in rodents (Morris water maze, Olton radial maze, Pavlovian fear conditioning, conditioned taste aversion learning, thermal and electrical analgesia, open field behaviors), and the statistical analysis of data. COURSE DEVELOPMENT In conjunction with Drs. Patrick Whelan and Mort Doran, I contributed to a complete overhaul of the Neuroscience II 'neuroanatomy and systems neuroscience' course (2003). I was responsible for finding and implementing a new textbook, and I completely re-wrote the laboratory manual to make it more integrated with class lectures. This included developing a new course outline and indexing all items to be covered in lecture with two relevant textbooks. I was also responsible for implementing for the first time weekly structured tutorials as an integral component of the students' learning experience in the course. 6
