Control of motor function. Control of motor function â The activities of the basal ganglia and cerebellum modulate the corticospinal and cortical-brainstem-spinal systems. Chorea, Ataxia, other movement disorders on chorea and other allied movement disorders of early life Chorea, Ataxia, and other Movement Disorders Dr. Fred Stephen Sarfo (MD, PhD) Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Kumasi, Ghana Control of motor function Control of motor function â The activities of the basal ganglia and cerebellum modulate the corticospinal and cortical-brainstem-spinal systems. (PDF) Chorea, Ataxia, and other Movement Disorders Gaby on chorea and other allied movement disorders of early life Most cases of Sydenhamâ s chorea occur between the ages of 7 and 15 years of age and are usually gradual in onset, but may be abrupt. The initial symptoms are often psychological, with irritability, agitation, disobedience, and inattentiveness with a confusional state occurring in about 10 per cent of patients. Chorea- Diagnosis and Management - ACNR on chorea and other allied movement disorders of early life Chorea refers to irregular, flowing, non-stereotyped, random, involuntary movements that often possess a writhing quality referred to as choreoathetosis. When mild, chorea can be difficult to differentiate from restlessness. When chorea is proximal and of large amplitude, it is called ballism. Chorea and related disorders - PubMed Central (PMC) on chorea and other allied movement disorders of early life On Chorea. George Huntington, M.D. First published in the Medical and Surgical Reporter of Philadelphia on April 13, Chorea is essentially a disease of the nervous system. The name â œchoreaâ is given to the disease on account of the dancing propensities of those who are affected by it, and it is a very appropriate designation. On Chorea - Huntington's Disease Society of America on chorea and other allied movement disorders of early life Hyperkinetic movement disorders are characterized by involuntary movements unaccompanied by weakness (Table 428-1).This term is somewhat arbitrary and potentially misleading as hypokinetic disorders such as Parkinsonâ s disease (PD) are often accompanied by tremor which is a hyperkinetic feature, and hyperkinetic disorders such as dystonia may manifest slow movements because of the severe... Tremor, Chorea, and Other Movement Disorders Harrison's on chorea and other allied movement disorders of early life Mitochondrial disorders. Acute encephalopathy, seizures, psychomotor retardation, hypotonia, spasticity, myopathy, and dysarthria may also be seen. In some cases there may be an overlap with mitochondrial encephalopathy with stroke-like episodes (MELAS). Other mitochondrial disorders may also present with chorea. An approach to the patient with chorea on chorea and other allied movement disorders of early life Causes and Risk Factors. Chorea is a common symptom of Page 3

4 Huntingtonâ s disease. Rheumatic fever can cause chorea. In this case, it is called Syndenham's chorea. If the condition is caused by pregnancy, it is known as chorea gravidarum. Other causes include medications, endocrine disorders, or a stroke or tumor. Page 4
