DAILY NEWS BULLETIN LEADING HEALTH, POPULATION AND FAMILY WELFARE STORIES OF THE Day Monday THOUGHT CONTROL (The Times of India: ) CONTROL-Found-Chemical-in-the-brain-that THOUGHT CONTROL - Found: Chemical in the brain that shuts out bad memories Scientists have identified a key chemical in the brain that allows us to suppress unpleasant memories, a finding that may pave the way for treating patients of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression or schizophrenia who experience such thoughts persistently. Our ability to control our thoughts is fundamental to our well-being, said Michael Anderson of the University of Cambridge, UK. When this capacity breaks down, it causes some of the most debilitating symptoms of psychiatric diseases: intrusive memories, images, hallucinations, ruminations, and pathological and persistent worries, said Anderson. These are all key symptoms of mental illnesses such as PTSD, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety, he added. Anderson likens our ability to intervene and stop ourselves from retrieving certain memories and thoughts to stopping a physical action. A region at the front of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex is known to play a key role in controlling our actions and has more recently been shown to play a similarly important role in stopping our thoughts. The prefrontal cortex acts as a master regulator, controlling other brain regions -the motor cortex for actions and the hippocampus for memories. In the study, published in the journal `Nature Communications', scientists used a task known as the `Think No-Think' procedure to identify a significant new brain process that enables the prefrontal cortex to successfully inhibit our thoughts. In the task, participants learn to associate a series of words with a paired, but otherwise unconnected, word, for example ordealroach and mossnorth. In the next stage, they were asked to recall the associated word if the cue is green or to suppress it if the cue is red; in other words, when shown `ordeal' in red, they were asked to stare at the word but to stop themselves thinking about the associated thought `roach'.

Using a combination of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the researchers were able to observe what was happening within key regions of the brain as the participants tried to inhibit their thoughts. The ability to inhibit unwanted thoughts relies on a neurotransmitter known as GABA. It is the main `inhibitory' neurotransmitter in the brain, and its release by one nerve cell can suppress activity in other cells to which it is connected. Breast-feeding. (The Times of India: ) How `parennials' are shaking up parenting For Them, Google Is The New Grandparent, New Neighbour And New Nanny When Anne Halsall, 34, brought her son home from the hospital in 2012, she followed the best advice about breast-feeding. Her son, however, kept losing weight. After getting conflicting advice from experts, Halsall did what many frustrated new mothers do these days. She turned to Google. I tried to download an app for breastfeeding, and they were all made by men, and they were all horrible, she said. So Halsall, an engineer, wrote her own, called Baby's Day. I was a frustrated mom who built an app for moms, she said, You can't get more millennial than that! The much-maligned millennials, those born between roughly 1980 and 2000, have been chided for being selfish, spoiled, and addicted to trophies, hookups and likes. But while the rest of society has been busy hating on millennials, the older ones have been busy growing up, settling down and having children.more than 16 million millennial women are now mothers, according to Pew. Eighty-two percent of children born each year are born to millennial mothers. That's five out of every six babies. And their parents -let's call them parennials -are challenging all sorts of commonly held beliefs about the American family. Parennials spent their formative years steeped in personal technology. As a result they're high-information parents, said Rebecca Parlakian of Zero to Three, an organisation studying new parents since The good news is that parents know more about child development than ever before, she said, Google is the new grandparent, the new neighbour, the new nanny. Many parennials, accus tomed to chronicling every fab appetiser and every failed job interview, give their children YouTube channels from the first sonogram and hashtags when they're born. Sara Mauskopf, 32, a partner with Halsall in Winnie, a parenting startup, named her daughter with her social media profile in mind. I knew I wanted to name her Brynn, but when considering middle names, there were a couple of ` A' names we were thinking about. We chose Brynn Avery as I could get the Twitter she said.

Others, like Kassandra Ortiz, 26, a mother of two, are warier. After being stalked online by a classmate, she considers herself overly protective of her children. I like taking pictures of my kids walking away, so I avoid showing their faces, she said, I have this fear that if I post a picture on Instagram, my child will become a meme. Brad Harrington of the Boston College Center for Work & Family has found that a third of millennial families say spouses should share chores and feel they achieve this goal, while another third strive for equality but the fe male partner does more. From her experience running Winnie, Halsall has concluded that millennial dads are different than their elders, in that they see it as a positive masculine trait to be involved with their children. Gender roles are not the only thing being challenged by parennials; other social norms are experiencing upheaval as well. Pew has found that nine in 10 millennials approve of interracial marriage or crosscultural marriage. Maybe it's their uncertain economic status, their sense of experimentation, or simply the times they grew up in, but many parennials seem less rigid than their elders. Good quality medicines Only WHO-certified drugs to be bought (The Tribune: ) To ensure the supply of good quality medicines to government hospitals, Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC) has decided to purchase these only from WHO-certified companies. In a recent meeting of the PHSC, which is responsible for purchasing all kinds of supplies for state hospitals, it was decided that only those manufacturers who possess the item-wise certificate of pharmaceutical product (COPP) as per the WHO would be eligible to participate in the tenders. As per the earlier system, all manufacturers were allowed who had good manufacturing practices (GMP), said Varun Roojam, Managing Director, PHSC. The corporation purchases medicines worth around Rs 130 crore every year. We want people to get good quality medicines in government hospitals, said Brahm Mohindra, Health Minister.

Dengue cases Dengue cases more than double in 17 days (The Tribune: ) days/ html There is no respite from dengue in the state as the number of patients has more than doubled from 1,217 cases on October 17 to 2,534 on November 3. According to the Health Department figures, 2,534 positive cases of dengue have been reported in the state against 1,996 cases during the corresponding period last year. What is worrisome is that of these cases, more than 2,000 have come to the fore in the past 45 days. Sources say the actual number of dengue patients is higher. As the health authorities recorded only those cases that tested positive in government laboratories through ELISA or NS1 Antigen tests, a large number of cases go unreported. The department figures do not show any death due to dengue in the state, though media reports show that at least 10 persons have died due to the disease. According to the official records, the maximum number of 352 cases have been reported in Hisar district, followed by Rohtak 334, Ambala 260, Fatehabad 253, Panipat 198, Panchkula 173, Rewari 136, Kaithal 129, Faridabad 112, Sirsa 92, Jhajjar, 90, Kurukshetra 82, Jind 72, Karnal 60, Gurugram 54, Sonepat 52, Yamunanagar 41, Bhiwani 38, Mahendergarh and Palwal 3 each. No case has been reported from Nuh district. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had recently taken suo moto notice of the rising dengue cases in Haryana and served a notice on the Health Department. The sources say the department submitted an affidavit before the court, listing steps taken to control the disease. Principal Secretary (Health) Amit Jha said the department had taken effective steps, including fogging in rural and urban areas and anti-larval activities, for the control of dengue. He added the department is educating people to keep their surroundings clean and not allow water to stagnate as mosquito responsible for dengue breeds in clean water, normally in households.

Malnutrition On cards: Mission to tackle malnutrition (The Tribune: ) The Centre will soon constitute a national nutrition mission (NNM) to catalyse efforts to tackle malnutrition in the country. The proposal for the mission has been made by the Ministry for Women and Child Development and is under consideration of Prime Minister s Office (PMO). An official of the ministry said either PM Narendra Modi or the Vice-Chairperson of NITI Aayog will be its Chairperson. Mission s idea was conceptualized following Modi taking a meeting on issues relating to malnutrition. During the meeting, he is said to have instructed for enhanced activism to tackle the social evil. Subsequently, the ministry s authorities embarked on a series of in-house brainstorming sessions and set a goal to make India malnutrition-free by 2022 the 75th anniversary of country s Independence. The PMO has directed that the district magistrates in the states must hold a meeting, once every three month, to review implementation of the National Food Security Act, 2013, centrally sponsored Integrated Child Development Scheme and the Mid Day Meal scheme etc. A directive has also been issued for ministries and departments to converge their schemes for synergy to tackle malnutrition. PM may head it The idea has been proposed by the Ministry for Women and Child Development and is under consideration of the PMO Either PM Narendra Modi or the Vice-Chairperson of NITI Aayog will be the mission's Chairperson The idea was conceptualised after Modi started holding meetings on issues concerning malnutrition

Vampire therapy' Vampire therapy' may reverse Alzheimer's symptoms (The Tribune: ) "Vampire therapy" transfusions of blood of young people into elderly may reverse some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's, scientists say. Researchers at Stanford University in the US infused blood plasma of 18 to 30-year-olds into people with signs of moderate dementia who then regained some of their everyday skills, such as the ability to bathe and dress themselves or do shopping and housework. Alzheimer's disease being the most common form of dementia. It kills brain cells, damaging memory and the ability to think straight, speak and organise oneself. Researchers followed earlier animal studies that showed the blood of young mice could rejuvenate the brains of old mice, causing a burst of cell growth in the hippocampus, which is central to memory. "There were hints of improvement on tests of functional ability," Sharon Sha, associate professor at Stanford University told 'The Times'. "These included the capacity to perform basic tasks essential to independent daily life such as remembering to take medications and being able to pay bills and prepare one's own meals," Sha said. The team conducted a human trial 18 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's. They were given a battery of tests to measure their cognition, mood and functional ability. Participants were given regular infusions of plasma, the liquid part of blood, with all cells removed, with the tests repeated during and at the end of the trial. Researchers noted that there were unexpected but measurable improvements in day-to-day skills. There were, however, no noticeable improvements in patients' mood or cognition. PTI

Soy compound Soy compound may help fight breast cancer (The Tribune: )

NEW YORK: A compound found in soy food products may help suppress the development of breast cancer, paving the way for new therapies to prevent the disease, a study claims. Researchers at University of Arizona in the US suggest genistein a component of soy foods can protect BRCA1, a gene that plays a pivotal role in thwarting tumour development in breast tissue. BRCA1 is a tumour-suppressor gene. When working normally, it helps keep DNA stable, protecting against genetic diseases like cancer; when BRCA1 is performing abnormally, the body s defences against breast cancer are impaired, researchers said. A small percentage of breast cancers are caused by mutations in BRCA1, many other breast cancer patients have normal copies, but the genes have been methylated - wrapped in strands of carbon-based molecules that render them unreadable. The BRCA1 gene silenced in this manner is unable to do its job as a tumour suppressor, they said. One receptor, the aromatic hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), silences BRCA1, triggering a cascade of undesirable effects. When BRCA1 is unable to carry out its duties as a tumour suppressor, cancerous cells can proliferate, researchers said. The study, published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition, found that AhR can be targeted by genistein. The team hopes this discovery will lead to a genistein-based therapy that can block the harmful actions of AhR. One weapon that may be used to target AhR is found in soy, a protein-packed legume that is a major source of compounds called isoflavones, they said. Lifetime intake of soy in Asian women has been linked to reduced risk of breast cancer. Genistein is the predominant isoflavone found in soy and it may actually block DNA methylation the silencing of the BRCA1 gene, said Donato F Romagnolo, professor at University of Arizona. PTI

Drinking coffee Drinking coffee may cut death risk in kidney disease patients (The Tribune: ) Want to live longer? Charge up on your cup of coffee. According to a study, caffeine consumption may prolong the lifespan of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The findings showed a dose-dependent inverse association between caffeine and all-cause mortality. People who had the highest intake of coffee had 24 per cent lower risks of dying, while those in the second, third quartile of caffeine consumption had 12 per cent and 22 per cent lower risk. "These results suggest that advising patients with CKD to drink more caffeine may reduce their mortality. This would represent a simple, clinically beneficial, and inexpensive option," said Miguel Bigotte Vieira from Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, in Portugal. However, "this benefit should ideally be confirmed in a randomised clinical trial", Vieira added. For the study, the team examined the association of caffeine consumption with mortality among 2328 patients with CKD. The results will be presented at the ongoing ASN Kidney Week 2017 in New Orleans. Moreover, this observational study cannot prove that caffeine reduces the risk of death in patients with CKD, but only suggests the possibility of such a protective effect, Vieira stressed. Drinking coffee can also reduce diabetes risk, revealed a reported in the American Chemical Society Journal of Natural Products. IANS

Quit smoking Why women need more guts' than men to 'kick the cigarette butt'(the Tribune: ) Women tend to find it harder to quit smoking than men and a recent study suggests why. Scientists reported in a mouse study that the difference in gender smoking patterns and smoking's effects could be due to how nicotine impacts the brain-gut relationship. When a person smokes tobacco, nicotine is delivered mainly to the lungs. But with skin patches and chewing tobacco, nicotine crosses the skin and into the gastrointestinal tract, respectively. The researchers set up a 13-week experiment during which they administered nicotineinfused water to mice. An analysis of the animals' fecal samples showed major differences in the composition of the microbiomes in male and female mice. Levels of compounds and bacterial genes associated with the nervous system and body weight were altered in different ways in male and female mice. For example, the mice exposed to nicotine, especially the males, had lower concentrations of glycine, serine, and aspartic acid, which could weaken the addictive effect of nicotine. In addition, nicotine-treated female mice had reduced amounts of Christensenellaceae bacteria, while the treated male mice had increased levels, which are associated with a lower body mass index. The team said that future efforts will focus on exploring the relationship of the nicotine-gutbrain interactions on a molecular level to further understand the communication paths involved. The study is published in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology. ANI

Aspirin Daily aspirin use may cut digestive cancer risk (The Tribune: ) Individuals who regularly use pain reliever aspirin are likely to experience a significant reduction in digestive cancer risk, finds a study involving over 600,000 people. The findings showed that patients who were prescribed aspirin daily showed a 47 per cent reduction in liver and oesophageal cancer incidence. Gastric cancer reduced by 38 per cent, pancreatic cancer by 34 per cent while colorectal cancer by 24 per cent, it said. Digestive cancers account for almost a quarter of cancer cases in Europe. Colorectal, gastric and pancreatic cancer are within the top five cancer killers throughout the continent, with digestive cancers representing 30.1 per cent of cancer deaths. "The findings demonstrate that the long-term use of aspirin can reduce the risk of developing many major cancers," said lead researcher Kelvin Tsoi, Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "What should be noted is the significance of the results for cancers within the digestive tract, where the reductions in cancer incidence were all very substantial, especially for liver and oesophageal cancer," Tsoi added. The results were presented at the 25th United European Gastroenterology Week in Barcelona. Moreover, the effect of long-term use of aspirin was also seen in significant reduction in leukaemia, lung and prostate cancers and some breast, bladder, kidney and multiple myeloma cancers.

For the study, the team compared patients who were prescribed aspirin over a long period (for at least six months, average duration of aspirin prescribed was 7.7 years) with non-aspirin users. Whilst the use of aspirin is debated within the medical community, a recent study also found that patients who stopped taking aspirin were 37 per cent more likely to have an adverse cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, than those who continued with their prescription, the researchers noted. Experimental vaccine Experimental vaccine may protect against HIV (The Tribune: ) Scientists have developed a novel vaccine candidate that may prevent HIV infection by stimulating an immune response against sugars that form a protective shield around the virus. "An obstacle to creating an effective HIV vaccine is the difficulty of getting the immune system to generate antibodies against the sugar shield of multiple HIV strains," said Lai-Xi Wang, a professor at University of Maryland in the US. "Our method addresses this problem by designing a vaccine component that mimics a protein-sugar part of this shield," said Wang. Researchers designed a vaccine candidate using an HIV protein fragment linked to a sugar group. When injected into rabbits, the vaccine candidate stimulated antibody responses against the sugar shield in four different HIV strains. The protein fragment of the vaccine candidate comes from gp120, a protein that covers HIV like a protective envelope. A sugar shield covers the gp120 envelope, bolstering HIV's defenses. The rare HIV-infected individuals who can keep the virus at bay without medication typically have antibodies that attack gp120. Researchers have tried to create an HIV vaccine targeting gp120, but had little success as the sugar shield on HIV resembles sugars found in the human body and therefore does not stimulate a strong immune response. More than 60 strains of HIV exist and the virus mutates frequently. As a result, antibodies against gp120 from one HIV strain will not protect against other strains.

To overcome these challenges, researchers focused on a small fragment of gp120 protein that is common among HIV strains. They used a synthetic chemistry to combine the gp120 fragment with a sugar molecule, also shared among HIV strains, to mimic the sugar shield on the HIV envelope. Researchers then injected the protein-sugar vaccine candidate into rabbits and found that the rabbits' immune systems produced antibodies that physically bound to gp120 found in four dominant strains of HIV in circulation today. Injecting rabbits with a vaccine candidate that contained the protein fragment without the sugar group resulted in antibodies that primarily bound to gp120 from only one HIV strain. "This result was significant because producing antibodies that directly target the defensive sugar shield is an important step in developing immunity against the target and therefore the first step in developing a truly effective vaccine," Wang said. Although the rabbits' antibodies bound to gp120, they did not prevent live HIV from infecting cells. This result did not surprise Wang, who noted that it usually takes humans up to two years to build immunity against HIV and the animal study only lasted two months. "But the ability of the vaccine candidate to raise substantial antibodies against the sugar shield in only two months is encouraging," Wang said. "Other studies took up to four years to achieve similar results. This means that our molecule is a relatively strong inducer of the immune response," he said. PTI Exercise Cycling to work as effective for weight loss as hitting gym (The Tribune: ) Riding the bike to work may be just as effective for losing weight as exercising at the gym five days a week, a study has found. "This is good news to the many overweight people who may not have the time or inclination to join a fitness centre, because they also have to pick up their children and cook dinner after work," said Bente Stallknecht, Professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. "Our results show that it is possible to combine transport to and from work with effective physical exercise," said Stallknecht. The study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, involved 130 overweight people with a body mass index (BMI) of kilogrammes per square metre (kg/m2).

A criterion for participating in the study was they were not too active or muscular based on a series of parameters like body fat percentage, maximum oxygen uptake and level of physical activity. The participants were divided into four groups of which one had to ride the bike to and from work. Two other groups had to do physical exercise five times a week, one at high intensity, the other at moderate intensity. The last group could make no changes and thus functioned as the control group. The groups that cycled and were physically active during their leisure time burned the same amount of calories a week during these activities; only the intensity and form of physical exercise varied. After six months all groups, except for the control group, had less fat mass. The fat mass had been reduced by 4.5 kg (compared to the control group) in the group doing high-intensity leisure time exercise, by 2.6 kg in the group doing moderate-intensity leisure time exercise and by 4.2 kg in the group riding the bike to work. "All forms of physical exercise are better than the control group, but high-intensity exercise is statistically better than moderate-intensity exercise," said Jonas Salling Quist, Research Assistant at University of Copenhagen. "And riding the bike to and from work is at least as effective a means for reducing fat mass as exercising during your leisure time," said Quist. PTI Mental Health (The Asian Age: )
