2 ANNOUNCING THE GHFP-II 2016 SUMMER INTERNSHIPS THE GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWS PROGRAM (GHFP) II SUMMER INTERNSHIP APPLICATION SEASON HAS ARRIVED! ENCLOSED IS A SNEAK PREVIEW OF A SELECTION OF INTERNSHIPS FOR SUMMER As a GHFP-II summer Intern, you will work alongside world-renowned global health experts at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). GHFP-II Interns deliver high-level technical support for international projects in maternal and child health, family planning, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, and other technical areas. Interns have clear learning objectives and an effective evaluation method to maximize their experience. Through the Internship program, GHFP-II creates a pipeline for the next generation of global health professionals that is representative of American diversity. PREVIOUS GHFP-II INTERNS HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO USAID S WORK Participated in the development of communications materials used to announce the results of FACTS 001 and the launch of the Global Health Supply Chain Program. Drafted recommendations for integration of alcohol treatment and screening to existing operational plans, and examined relationship between alcohol and unprotected sex in Uganda. Conducted a literature review of recent research on condom efficacy resulting in revised condom fact sheets and technical issue briefs. Conducted a systematic literature review on planning and strengthening the Social Service Workforce (SSW), and how the SSW supports the wellbeing of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS, their families, and caregivers to draft a State of the Research Report. My love for the [global health] field was increased as a result of my internship. Summer 2015 Intern This was one of the most fun and fulfilling experiences of my life. Summer 2015 Intern Developed a comprehensive presentation on the clinical and psychosocial needs of adolescents living with HIV, which was used in a presentation by the Africa Bureau to the Deputy Principles of USAID. 2 Page

The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP) II is the United States Agency for International Development s (USAID s) premier health fellowship program that identifies and supports diverse, technically excellent professionals. GHFP-II Fellows and Interns support the Agency s global health programs. To be most effective, the Agency recognizes that training and coaching participants is essential to strengthening their ability to contribute to global health priorities. GHFP-II Internships are short-term opportunities for current students or recent graduates. Internships are offered in a variety of technical areas and are available throughout the year. These compensated experiences open the door to substantive experience with USAID s Bureau for Global Health, and key professional development along the way. BACKGROUND: The Malaria Division under the Office of Office of Health, Infectious Diseases, and Nutrition (HIDN) within the Bureau for Global Health (GH) leads the President s Malaria Initiative (PMI). PMI is a US Government effort, led by USAID and implemented together with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to reduce the intolerable burden of malaria and help relieve poverty on the African continent. Building upon the progress to date in PMI-supported countries, PMI will work with partners to reduce malaria mortality by one-third from 2015 levels in PMI-supported countries, reduce malaria morbidity in PMI-supported countries by 40 percent from 2015 levels, and assist at least five PMI-supported countries to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for national or sub-national pre-elimination, by P age
5 PMI s strategic approach emphasizes the following five areas: (1) Achieving and sustaining scale of proven interventions (namely, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying with insecticides, intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women, and prompt use of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) for those who have been diagnosed with malaria); (2) Adapting to changing epidemiology and incorporating new tools; (3) Improving countries capacity to collect and use information; (4) Mitigating risk against the current malaria control gains; and (5) Building capacity and health systems. INTRODUCTION: The Malaria Communications Intern (Intern) will work with the Communications Team on PMI s external and internal communications, in order to document achievements and produce materials which reflect the Initiative s core management principles of transparency and accountability. S/he will work closely with the Malaria Technical Advisors as his/her onsite manager. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Gaining understanding of malaria prevention and control programming needs and key approaches to improve coverage of malaria control interventions that, in turn, contribute to reducing all-cause mortality rates in children less than five years of age. Deepening skills in communicating PMI s achievements to external audiences, especially using social media platforms. Deepening skills in communication and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure (between USAID headquarters and field operating units as well as among various USG agencies). Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Assisting with updating key PMI communication tools (e.g. Fast Facts, country profiles, and website) to reflect latest data and stories from the 10th Annual Report to Congress (release date: April 25, 2016). Assisting with the organization of PMI photos and other visual content and migration of photos to a web-based platform. Developing 1-3 Country in Focus pages. Liaising between PMI teams and implementing partners to ensure timely updates and accuracy of postings. Assisting with editing FY 2017 Malaria Operational Plans. Helping support social media strategy (e.g. Twitter). 5 Page
6 Updating country contracts/agreements tab on pmi.gov. Working with a communications contractor to develop innovative modes of communicating information (e.g., Infographics, Prezi, Quick Draw, sand art, etc.). Keeping abreast of new developments, research and emerging issues in malaria that affect USAID s technical priorities via literature reviews, attendance at technical meetings, and workshops, and disseminating information via Twitter/web. Reviewing Missions websites for malaria-related content for cross-posting and coordinating with Development Outreach and Communications specialists, as appropriate. Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern s own interests. QUALIFICATIONS: Currently enrolled master s or other post-bachelor s degree candidate in public health, international health, international relations, social sciences, or related field; or, completion of such within the past 12 months. Experience working on malaria and/or other health programs in developing countries, preferably in Africa, is highly desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to communicate quickly, clearly and concisely. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a broad range of USG personnel and international partners. Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Twitter, Facebook, Prezi, Flickr. Working knowledge of French or Portuguese is highly desirable. US citizenship or US permanent residency required. In February 2015, PMI launched a new six-year strategy that focuses on five strategic areas: 1) Achieving and sustaining scale of proven interventions; 2) Adapting to changing epidemiology and new tools; 3) Improving countries capacity to collect and use information; 4) Mitigating risks against the current malaria control gains; and 5) Building capacity and health systems towards full country ownership. 8 INTRODUCTION: The Malaria in Pregnancy (MIP) Intern (Intern) will primarily assist the MIP Team to gather, analyze, and disseminate information on progress in scaling-up intermittent preventative treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) in PMI supported countries. S/he will assist with supporting priority activities of the interagency MIP Working Group and maternal health flagship project, Maternal and Child Survival Project (MCSP) that provides technical support to USAID Missions and national governments to improve coverage of MIP interventions. The Intern will contribute to MIP Team operations such as reviewing Malaria Operational Plans (MOPs) and conducting analysis of MIP country programs as detailed in the MOPs. S/he will work closely with the MIP Team lead as his/her onsite manager. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Gaining an understanding of malaria in pregnancy programming needs and approaches to improve coverage of MIP interventions (Insecticide treated bed nets (ITNs)), IPTp and case management) that, in turn, contribute to maternal and newborn health outcomes. Developing an understanding of technical and programmatic issues and best practices related to PMI programs, including MIP programming in FY2017 MOPs. Strengthening competencies in process management, qualitative and quantitative analysis, collaboration, planning and prioritization. Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Assisting the PMI MIP Team by providing technical support for MIP work plan of actions and activities, updating IPT barriers table with current and future activities, refining sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) tracking tables to reflect both central and facility level information on SP stocks per country, and reviewing project related documents. Collaborating with OSM to conduct a review of MIP activities in MOPs, analyzing and assessing PMI investments in MIP programming, tracking the status of countries' adoption of new IPTp policy recommendations and developing a report on findings and recommendations. Collaborating with OSM to develop and/or writing a peer review journal article on PMI MIP efforts, successes, and lessons learned based on analysis of PMI MIP programs. Reviewing and assisting in developing a health facility assessment tool for IPTp and MIP programming. Assisting the PMI MIP Team to provide countries guidance in testing a new MIP case management job aid and document feedback from PMI country staff and partners. 8 Page
9 Participating in technical discussions and planning meetings with implementing partners, PMI technical team meetings, and program related events to better understand project management and technical concepts. Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern s own interests. QUALIFICATIONS: Currently enrolled in master s or other post-bachelor s degree candidate in public health, international health, international development, social sciences, or a related field; or, completion of such within the past 12 months. Demonstrated experience with quantitative or qualitative analysis Experience working on malaria and/or other health programs (especially maternal and child health) in developing countries, ideally in Africa, is preferred. Demonstrated interest in international development and global health issues. Motivated self-starter with excellent oral and written communication skills. French or Portuguese language skills a plus. INTRODUCTION: The Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) Publications Intern (Intern) will primarily assist the IRS Team in developing technical manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. In addition, the Intern will provide some technical and writing support for a large, complex, multi-country IRS contract, which provides technical and implementation support to 15 countries spray and entomologic monitoring programs. To develop an understanding of USAID project management support functions, s/he will support the IRS project by monitoring annual country work plans and reviewing technical reports and deliverables. S/he will also develop an understanding of technical issues and best practices related to USAID s PMI programs through participation in the interagency FY 2017 Malaria Operational Plan (MOP) review process. The Intern will strengthen his/her competencies in manuscript writing, process management, qualitative/quantitative analysis, collaboration, planning and prioritization. S/he will receive technical guidance from the Malaria Technical Advisor, who will serve as his/her onsite manager. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Deeping skills in manuscript development for peer-reviewed publications. Gaining a greater understanding of IRS and USAID project management support functions. Developing an understanding of technical issues and best practices related to PMI programs, including the overall process of the FY 2017 MOP. Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Contributing to manuscript development, including drafting and editing 1-2 manuscripts for the PMI IRS team, using already existing PMI data. Conducting literature reviews on select topics for the PMI IRS team. Providing activity coordination support, by participating in technical meetings with implementing partners and stakeholders, and assisting in reviewing and providing feedback on project deliverables and reports in coordination with the PMI team. Participating in the IRS Country Backstop Operations Technical Assistance by attending relevant team meetings for one or two countries to further develop IRS understanding; including reviewing previous MOPs and assisting in technical activities with regard to approved workplans. QUALIFICATIONS: Currently enrolled doctoral degree candidate in public health, international development, or a related field; or, completion of such within the past 12 months. 13 BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE/DATA ANALYST INTERN TIMEFRAME: JUNE 2016 AUGUST 2016 (Compensated 12-Week Internship) LOCATION: WASHINGTON, DC / ARLINGTON, VA TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP AND RESEARCH DIVISION OFFICE OF HIV/AIDS BUREAU FOR GLOBAL HEALTH UNITED STATES AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT POSITION NUMBER: INT-P5-011 As health challenges evolve, complex global initiatives are created to meet them. BACKGROUND: USAID procures and distributes over $1 billion in health pharmaceuticals and supplies every year and invests over $200 million annually to strengthen supply chains in developing countries. With over 100 points of origin, over 50 destination countries, more than 4,000 SKUs and hundreds of shipments a year, the amount of data generated from its supply chain operation is significant. In addition, there is data residing in multiple country systems and many other data sources that further support USAID s supply chain program. USAID is in the process of bringing online a data warehouse and business intelligence tool to house and use these disparate datasets, in the management of its supply chain programs and investments. INTRODUCTION: The Supply Chain for Health Division (SCH) within the Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) in the Bureau for Global Health (GH) is seeking a Business Intelligence/ Data Analyst Intern to assist the team with (1) evaluating the 13 Page
14 quality of critical datasets, (2) designing solutions to address the root causes of missing and erroneous data, (3) designing strategic reports and dashboards to support key management units within GH and (4) identifying business process improvement opportunities centered around the newly developing analytics platform. The Intern will work closely with the Senior Management Information System Advisor who will serve as his/her onsite manager. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Gaining experience in the field of the Global Health supply chain data, data mapping processes and standards, core supply chain processes, business intelligence tools, dash boarding and analytics. Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Analyzing more than 20 supply chain datasets for data quality and identifying root causes of error through data analysis, business process review and stakeholder interviews. Recommending solutions to improve overall data quality (changes in processes, input automation, input masks, etc.). Supporting key personnel across the organization to design dashboards and reports that will provide decision-support and enable more efficient, effective and strategic management. Utilizing business process mapping on certain functions within USAID to recommend improvements to the process that could be made through the newly designed dashboards and reports. Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming needs and/or the intern s own interests. QUALIFICATIONS: Currently enrolled master s or other post-bachelor s degree candidate in a program related to supply chain management, business, information systems, computer science, or relevant field; or, completion of such within the past 12 months. Demonstrated experience and understanding of supply chain management, procurement, and/or logistics for a large organization. Experience in designing and building dashboards and/or analytical reports. Experience with Tableau and/or MicroStrategy software preferred. Familiarity with data model design preferred. Experience with ArcGis preferred. Basic understanding of relational databases and query experience (SQL, etc.) preferred. 14 P age
15 Detail-oriented enough to mine hundreds of thousands of records for problems and insights; enough strategic thinking abilities to translate detailed data into actionable recommendations to management. BACKGROUND: The Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA), within USAID s Bureau for Global Health (GH), is the focus of HIV/AIDS technical leadership for the Agency and has primary responsibility for leading the Agency's efforts within President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). In cooperation with agencies and partners, USAID provides global technical leadership on the full range of issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; manages numerous research and field support programs; and monitors the impact of the Agency's HIV/AIDS programs. INTRODUCTION: The Intern will primarily provide research support to the OHA staff and PEPFAR s Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator in addressing programmatic, research and policy issues regarding HIV services to Key Populations (referred to as most-at-risk populations).
