Program Overview Up to 40% of Americans suffer from some form of allergic rhinitis, a syndrome often characterized by a collection of symptoms that include sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal itching, and rhinorrhea. Accurate diagnosis of rhinitis directs treatment, so clinicians need to be familiar with the proper classification scheme used in rhinitis syndromes. 3 Faculty Biographies Todd A. Mahr, MD Dr. Mahr is a clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also serves as Director of Pediatric Allergy at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wisconsin. A published author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, Mahr lectures nationally and internationally on various allergy related topics. He is board certified in pediatrics and allergy/immunology. Gabriel R. Ortiz, MPAS, PA-C Gabriel Ortiz is a physician assistant at Pediatric Pulmonary Services in El Paso Texas. He is a frequent speaker on the topics of allergic rhinitis and asthma. Ortiz is co-founder of the American Academy of Physician Assistants in Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. and serves as AAPA s liaison to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAU) and as AAAAI s liaison to AAPA. He earned his Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska in Omaha. Target Audience This program is designed for physician assistants caring for patients with allergic rhinitis. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify the classic symptoms of rhinitis 2. Describe the key areas of the history and physical exam when working up a patient with possible allergic rhinitis Accreditation Statement This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of.25 hours of AAPA Category I CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel. Approval is valid for one year from the issue date of September 1, Participants may submit the self-assessment at any time during that period. This program was planned in accordance with AAPA s CME Standards for Enduring Material Programs and for Commercial Support of Enduring Material Programs. Successful completion of the self-assessment is required to earn Category I CME credit. Successful completion is defined as a cumulative score of at least 70 percent correct.
