Introduction to Light Therapy Edward C. Kondrot, MD
Background history Egyptians used gems as healing agents Greeks built solariums high in the mountains for treatment of tuberculosis Late 19th and early 20th century: Babbitt, Pleasanton, Pancoast and Dinshah Colour, applied to the skin, could have a nonintrusive, curative effect on bodily ailments Modern therapies Low level laser, SAD white light, syntonics
Syntonic Phototherapy Spitler in the 1920 s first started to apply selected light frequencies in optometric practice as part of management of patients Initiated the clinical science that he called Syntonics - from 'syntony', to bring into balance His model suggested that application of specific colours allowed selective stimulation of the autonomic nervous system to restore balance
The impact of color on the autonomic nervous system Sympathetic Stimulation Physiological Balance Parasympathetic Stimulation
Syntonic Phototherapy Diagnosis based on: Pupil responses: size and stability Visual fields: white and color High incidence of correlation with physiological, functional or emotional stress, toxicity, trauma, metabolic or endocrine dysfunction
The primary phototherapy colors Ruby Lemon Turquoise Violet Sympathetic Stimulation Physiological Balance Parasympathetic Stimulation
Proposed models for the action of light therapeutically Atomic Cellular Hormonal Autonomic
Atomic level All chemicals have specific light absorption and emission characteristics Spectral characteristics a consequence of electrons changing excitation states Change in excitation is associated with the absorption or release of a quantum of energy Narrow band filters restrict wavelengths and hence available quanta to be absorbed by the cellular contents
Cellular level Cellular changes already observed Ott - Flow of cellular protoplasm and organelles in plants altered by stimulation with different wavelengths of light Tina Karu - Research on various organisms and cell types consistently demonstrated that light alters cell metabolism, causing synthetic cell processes to dominate catabolic ones.
Cellular level Specific frequencies of light aided the healing of wounds Wounded, chronically inflamed, and ischemic cells are characterized by their acidic, hypoxic and inhibited state. Light drives them toward oxidation, balanced ph, and vitality Effect maintained following light stimulation
Cellular level Low Level Laser Therapy Management of ARMD/ Glaucoma Use by dentists following oral surgery to improve rate of recovery Karu s work demonstrated that there is no need for coherent light (LASER) and that normal light is equally as effective

Hormonal level Stimulation of blood products The choroid is highly vascular resulting in a significant exposure of blood products to the stimulation by light during therapy The blood constituents hemoglobin and bilirubin in animals may be counterparts to chlorophyll and phytochrome, the light-sensitive pigments in plants. Hemoglobin is similar to chlorophyll in structure. Both are reversibly altered by light
14
Autonomic level Spitler: Colors can selectively stimulate the autonomic nervous system Red / Green system interacts with the sympathetic component Blue / Yellow system interacts with the parasympathetic pathway Numerous CNS structures stimulated by light entering the eye
Significance of visual fields White fields Field of awareness Movement and survival Is there anything out there? Measure of poor Global thinking or overall lack of awareness of information
Significance of visual fields Colored fields Information processing Reflection of level of processing of detailed information of entire cognitive system Measure of capacity to integrate information
Behavior Changes commonly Typically calmer observed Sleep better - deeper and longer More aware of own and other s feelings More aware of the environment
Treatment Options: Choosing a color Acute: Recent onset pain, inflammation Treat with the parasympathetic end of the spectrum (Violet and Turquoise) Chronic: Long standing, embedded Treat with the sympathetic end of the spectrum (Ruby and Lemon)
Application of colors In office treatment comprises looking at a specific colour light (or sequence of colours) for a specific period of time. Home based therapy uses small 15 watt halogen bulb and special tinted glasses.
Applying syntonic phototherapy Learning Delays Information processing Age Related Macular Degeneration Cellular revitalization, reduced edema TBI, Amblyopia, Binocular Dysfunction Refer to optometric protocols
Syntonics and Information Processing The Effect of Syntonic (Colored Light) Stimulation on Certain Visual Cognitive Functions Jacob Liberman Journal of Optometric Vision Development Refer CSO Blue book
Jacob Liberman and LD Examined the effects of syntonics on visual field size visual memory for objects visual memory for abstract symbols auditory memory speed and accuracy of saccades 18 LD patients and 18 age matched normals Colours chosen on basis of clinical

Questions Your instruction for doing my light therapy and micro current programs were changed to mid-afternoon back in late February--this time frame tends to be 50% of the time inconvenient for me. Why is mid-afternoon so beneficial? Can I do these programs either in the morning or evening? There are numerous times when I have to do these programs in the evenings or after 7PM. 40
