1 Welcome to Issue #21 20th July 17 Friday 21st July Parent tour Trivia Night Tuesday 24th July Gr 6 Exhibition Evening Wednesday 2nd Aug Grandparents Day Friday 4th Aug Prep 100 Days from Anny what a Great Start to the Term! We begin term three by welcoming our visiting students from China. Over the first seven weeks of the term, we will host 24 students from prep to Grade six. We do not have visiting students in Grade four due to the larger classes. The visiting students will begin with an induction program conducted by our mandarin Chinese, teacher Julie Tran. In the first week they will work with Julie in the morning and go into classes after recess and lunch. In weeks two and three Julie will induct new arrivals and liaise with class teachers. Brighton Primary School is an accredited member of the Council of International Schools and a key improvement strategy of our current School Strategic Plan is inclusion. Our visiting student program demonstrates to the community our commitment to Standards and Practices of the Council of International Schools and builds our students understanding of international mindedness and global citizenship. Next, we host Grandparents and Special Friends Morning on Wednesday August 2 from pm. In the next week, Grandparents or Special Friends will receive an invitation inviting them to spend time with students in their classrooms, looking at their work and participating in activities. Our junior school councillors and grade six leaders will be available to show our visitors to classrooms. In order that Grandparents or Special Friends can spend maximum time with students and due to large numbers this year there will not be a morning tea.

2 In the same week on Friday August 4th there is the first 100 days of Prep; a favourite of mine! Our prep students celebrate with a Special Prep Assembly in periods one and two. There is a performance and each student receives a certificate. Students are asked to bring 100 things on the day and they are used for activities. It is a lovely celebration so mark it in your diary In the following week the next big event is the Specialists Spectacular which showcases the richness of our specialist program and the talents of our students at Brighton Primary School. In the Performing Arts Space on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from pm, a different year level is presenting each night. There will be: art works live performances, and interactive exhibits. The Specialist Spectacular replaces Brighton Stars and involves all the students in the year level rather than a few across the school: Grade three is Tuesday August 8 Grade four is Wednesday August 9 Grade five is Thursday August 10. Throughout term three, our Grade six students are working towards Exhibition. In schools that deliver the Primary Years Program, Exhibition is a celebration of the students journey through the Primary Years Program. It is an inquiry that starts from personal interests and passions and extends into real world issues. The students undertake a ten week inquiry and present their new learning in the Exhibition which opens on Wednesday August 30. PLEASE SAVE THESE DATES

3 Looking After Your Child s Asthma When a child has an asthma flare up, they need to take their asthma medicine as soon as possible. Without asthma medicine a flare up can get worse what is called an asthma attack. There are lots of different asthma medicines and it can be confusing. Relievers: Use for asthma flare ups Nearly everyone with asthma has a blue puffer. They make it easier to breathe very quickly by untightening the airway muscles. The spacer makes it easy to breathe the medicine into the lungs. A blue reliever puffer and spacer are what you use in an asthma emergency. Your child may have been prescribed a dry powder to be inhaled through a turbuhaler instead of a puffer. This does not require a spacer. It is important that you keep the school informed of any changes to your child s asthma and make sure they bring their reliever medication to school with them. Preventers: Use every day When asthma flares up more than twice in a week, your doctor might put you on another asthma medicine. These are called preventers and they help reduce the redness and swelling and dry up the mucus in the airways. Preventer medicine helps the airways to get well and stay well. You must keep taking them until the doctor starts to reduce the dose slowly and checks you are okay without it. There are lots of different preventers. Preventers are usually taken every morning and/or night (whatever the doctor says). It can take a few weeks for them to start working and reduce the number of flare ups you have. Its important to keep taking them when your asthma feels well so you can keep feeling well. It is always best to use a spacer with any puffer.

6 Visiting Chinese Students As a CIS school that values both inclusion and cultural diversity, we welcomed fourteen visiting students from China on Monday. The students are here to experience the Australian way of schooling, with some staying for two to three weeks and others for four to six weeks. After a brief induction and a tour of the school with Ms. Lawrence, the students gathered for their orientation with Ms. Tran. They range in age from prep through to grade 6. The students settled in smoothly and had big beaming faces by the end of the day. This was due in part to the welcoming classrooms and the warm reception that they were shown by the BPS students and teachers. Please say hello and introduce yourself to these students if you see them in the schoolyard. Let s show them what a wonderful, welcoming and inclusive community our BPS community is!

7 TRIVIA NIGHT Tickets are still on sale until 5pm today (20th July) for the Trivia night, be quick! Tables are a maximum of 10 and remember that each table can make up their own theme! So come dressed up as much or little as you want. And sorry no feather boas allowed. Each table are once again encouraged to bring their own platters of food please note that olives in oil are banned from the Brighton Town Hall! Like last year there will be pizzas available to order before the night, we will notify you when this is available on QKR. Also reminders that if you would like to donate anything for the silent and live auctions please contact me at fob@brighton.com.au The night is sure to be a winner with the Trivia King, fun activities and a DJ to finish our night off. Hope to see you all there. DAD S FOOTY MATCH The hype surrounding this year s showdown between the Brighton Lions and The Dreamer is growing every minute. There will be jumping castles for the kids and other fun activities to keep them occupied. Make sure you stick around afterwards as there will be a DJ, and a couple of star ex-afl players on hand to have a chat to. Tash

8 Megan, from Story Dogs spoke at assembly today. She introduced Sue and her dog Bundy, who will be starting at BPS next week. We have Michelle and her dog Holly who already visit our school on Mondays to listen to students read in the library. Megan and her dog Oona have also volunteered at our school during the year. Thank you to North Brighton Rotary who sponsor one of our dogs. You will notice their emblem on the dogs fabric coat. If you are interested in sponsoring a volunteer dog feel free to contact the school Congratulations to our Senior Students who were involved in the Italian Day play last term. We had an uplifting performance from our Grade 2 students to get us back in the mood for Term 3.
