Whilst it has been a long term, there have been many highlights including our Meet, Greet and Eat, class assemblies, Fancy Hair Day, Easter Hat Parade and yesterday s three-way conferences. The behaviour of our students continues to be outstanding and our student attendance level is at 77%. That is 2% above our target! I hope that we can maintain this during Term 2. For the last three years we have been Striving to Improve and our positive results indicate that our efforts are being rewarded. Congratulations to all! Have a happy and safe holiday. 2 Blessing of the Roads by Tigerlilly and Latrell On March 28, we represented Banksia Grove Primary School at the Blessing of the Roads ceremony held by the City of Wanneroo. The ceremony was to honour those who have lost their lives needlessly and to acknowledge all of the support services that assist those involved in accidents. There were students from a number of other schools, as well as dignitaries from the Police, Fire, Ambulance and volunteer organisations. Each of the speakers spoke about their organisations role in supporting road safety and how attending accidents on our roads affected their personnel. They listed a number of achievements that they had made to try and reduce the road toll and outlined the statistics to do with road accidents in WA. In fact, they did not call them accidents, but instead road crashes. Some of the statistics were really alarming. Did you know that between , over 6,500 people have been seriously injured in car crashes. This year alone has seen 37 fatalities already with over half occurring in the country. Many people head off on holidays during Easter and sadly this is one of the worst times of the year for road deaths. The Deputy Commissioner for Road Safety told us that 7 out of 10 road crashes were just accidents. They didn t involve speed, drugs, alcohol or people on their phones. They were probably caused by people who were tired, distracted or those who just made poor decisions. That s pretty scary, because none of them were doing anything wrong at the time of their deaths. All of these statistics were pretty alarming and made us think about how dangerous our roads can be. Mayor Tracey Roberts, the Mayor of the City of Wanneroo, spoke to us about being drivers of the future. She reminded us about our responsibilities and how we could make a difference. She suggested that when we were older and driving with other young drivers we should take responsibility for our own safety. If the driver of a car we re in is not driving safely, we should tell them to pull over at a safe place so we can get out of the vehicle. This includes drivers who are texting or using their phones while driving. After all of the speakers had finished, the Chaplain for the police said a prayer for all of the road users in our state. Next, we hammered in white crosses for all of the deaths in WA so far this year only three months and all of those crosses! It was pretty sad to think about how sad each of those families must now be. We are very lucky to live in such a great place. We hope that people listen to the road safety messages and drive carefully and safely over the Easer period ahead. Please drive safely. Tigerlily and Latrell (Head Girl and Head Boy)

3 Dads In The Grove Dads in the Grove is the Banksia Grove branch of the Fathering Project working in partnership with Banksia Grove Primary School, organised and run by local enthusiastic dads from the local community. The Fathering Project is a not for profit and inclusive charity that seeks to help children by working with schools and assisting fathers and father-figures to realise their importance in children s lives and to improve their effectiveness as a father and role-model for children. The Fathering Project utilises researched evidence to develop programs and initiatives to assist and encourage fathers to realise how important they are in a child's life and inspire them to get involved with their children. Our aim as The Dads in the Grove is to hold a combination of Dads only events and Dad s and Kids events/activities throughout the year to allow Dads to connect with their children in a community of like-minded dads within the Banksia Grove community. We re not exclusive to dads but also welcome any father figures such as grandparents, uncles, non-family members and single mothers. We had our first event in March and had such an amazing turnout from our Banksia Grove parents and their kids. Over time we hope to build a mailing list of interested parents that would like to know more about our future events and also receive information on The Fathering Project. If you would like to be on our mailing list to be the first to hear about our organised events within the community or receive exclusive invites, please with your name to dadsinthegrove@outlook.com.au. Events that other groups in surrounding schools have held include group bike rides, school camp outs, movie and pizza nights etc. We are also looking for more committee members that might be interested in helping to plan and organise such events. Currently our committee members are Mr. Michael Hughes (group leader and Yr 4 teacher), Michael Birch, Timothy Evans and Francisco Rodriguez. If you are an enthusiastic dad and interested in being involved in the community please let us know via the above . INTERM SWIMMING 21ST MAY - 1ST JUNE 2018 If you have submitted your swimming forms please note that payments are due for payment by Thursday 17th May. Cash payments can be made through the classroom teacher. EFTPOS payments can be made through the office. $40.00 per student.

Go to your APP or Play Store and search Banksia Grove Primary School. Install the APP and make sure you set your notifications. Never miss anything going on at school or in the community. The eforms category allows you to complete forms such as permission slips for swimming and excursions, absentee notifications and change of details. MOTHERS DAY STALL The Mothers Day Stall is scheduled for Friday the 11th of May The P&C Fundraising team would like to request donations of wrapping paper. Any donations would be greatly appreciated and can be given directly to the front office. We will also be putting a call out for any volunteers to assist prior with wrapping gifts and at the stall on the day.
