1 CURRENT RESEARCH Co-Investigator University Fellowship University of Texas at Austin Honors Program Student Association American Sociological Association Order Of Omega Rutgers College Supported Decision Making as an Alternative to Guardianship for People with Disabilities New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council Duration of Study: January 2016-January 2021 The grant proposes to create, operationalize and evaluate two pilot projects, one to divert persons at risk of guardianship, and the other to restore rights to persons currently under guardianship. The pilots will generate educational materials for diverse stakeholders in a number of different modalities. Principal Investigator Interpersonal Violence and Disability Loreen Arbus Foundation Duration of Study: September 2013 June 2016 This study is a retrospective examination of nearly 1000 client records of service users of a nonresidential interpersonal violence program for people with disabilities. The second component of the study involves in-depth interviews with fifty women with physical disabilities to explore three substantive areas: 1) abuse experiences and related risk assessment; 2) use of self-protective strategies; and 3) perceptions of necessary support services. Principal Investigator Growing Up Aware: A Parent-Based Sexuality Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Organization for Autism Research Duration of Study: January 2013-June 2016 This study tests a five-week, psychoeducational intervention designed to help parents of children with autism spectrum disorders understand and promote their child s healthy sexual development. A sample of 120 parents of children with autism spectrum disorders will be recruited from school districts within Bergen county, New Jersey. Primary outcomes address: (1) change in parental attitudes and knowledge concerning their child s sexuality; (2) change in parental communication skills related to issues of sexuality; and (3) change in level of children s awareness of sexuality.
