2 About This Directory Thanks to recommendations from members of the Autism Society of Minnesota, we have compiled listings of professional services and providers in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin who work with individuals and families on the autism spectrum. This directory has taken shape over the years, expanding as new recommendations are made. All entries in the latest version of the AuSM Resource Directory are services and/ or providers that have been deemed helpful by consumers. Their listing should not, however, be considered an endorsement or recommendation either by the Autism Society of Minnesota or its Board of Directors. For convenience, all entries are listed alphabetically by clinic, organization or private practitioner. Cities, states and zip codes are written in bold-faced type so that readers can easily determine the location of particular service providers. If you know of a service or provider that you think should be included, please submit it to us in writing (either by or regular mail). 5 General Financial, Educational and Social Service Resources for Children and Families Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) The Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) exists to enhance the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). AuSm seeks to realize its mission through education, support, collaboration and advocacy. Established in 1971, AuSM consists of families, educators, caregivers and professionals committed to supporting individuals with ASD. AuSM has members throughout Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. It provides information and referral, advocacy, behavioral consultation, workshops and conferences, support groups, and camps. School District -- Special Education Department Children with autism spectrum disorders are eligible to receive special education services based on individual needs. Contact your local school district for more information. For children ages birth to three, an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) is developed by parents and the ECSE teacher/ therapist. Parents of children over three participate in developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP), which will include location, number of days, and types of services. County Services -- Human Services Department Each county has a department of human services (developmental disabilities/children and family/ children s mental health) that provides special services to children with autism spectrum disorders and their families. To access county services, call the county and tell them you need services for a person with an autism spectrum disorder. Next ask to apply for case management services. The case manager will help to determine which services meet the needs of your child and your family. These might include respite service, family support grants, in-home waivered services, or emergency assistance. This is not the same as TEFRA. (See below.) SSI Supplemental Security Income is a program of monthly income for a child with a disability. \To complete the application process, you will need a doctor s report. The application process takes three to four months. Determination of eligibility is based on family income and assets. Call for more information. TEFRA TEFRA allows children with disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders to be eligible for Medical Assistance without regard to the income of their parents. To be eligible, the child must be under 19, meet SSI eligibility standards, need care typically provided by a group home, and live at home. Parents usually pay a monthly co-pay. Services include personal care assistance (PCA), therapist services, and medical equipment and supplies. Call your county to apply.
