1 December Issue 104 Texana Center Behavioral Healthcare & Developmental Disabilities Services 4910 Airport Avenue Rosenberg Texas TEXANA TROT A GREAT SUCCESS The 2017 Texana Trot was a great success with 230 participants turning out early in the morning tat the beautiful Cross Creek Ranch in Fulshear, Texas. The event raised close to $20,000 for the Forward Together in Fulshear Capital Campaign to build a campus in Fulshear. Foti Kallegris from ABC 13 was the Master of Ceremonies guiding everyone through the event. Jason Harley, aka Richard Simmons, with The Summit Fitness Studio provided a warm up routine to get everyone going - quite a colorful spectacle! Musical entertainment came via Sam Cortez with Electric DJ. The Office Trot Starter was Captain Mike McCoy with the Fulshear Police Department was the official Trot Starter and The Sugar Land Skeeters Swatson provided a lot of encouragement to our runners and walkers. We are very grateful to OcuSOFT Inc. for taking the Presenting Sponsorship and would like to thank them and all of other sponsors: Si Environmental, LLC, Jones Carter, RMWBH Law, Liberty Star Mortgage a branch of SecurityNational Mortgage Co NMLS ID 3116, Randalls, Lathrop Dental Center, Chuck Bucek CPA PC, Fulshear Animal Hospital, and New First National Bank. 2 TEXANA S THANKSGIVING PARADE The Children s Center for Autism s Bridge Class put on another historical Thanksgiving Parade. The spent the week learning about the meaning of Thanksgiving and then made costumes and posters in readiness for the parade around the Texana Campus in Rosenberg. How cute are they? DÉCOR & MORE AT SUGAR PLUM MARKET Texana Décor & More.. was delighted to be asked to once again have a booth at the Fort Bend Junior Service League s Sugar Plum Market at the Stafford Centre in November Over the duration of the event several Texana clients were on hand to help sell Décor & More items. Texana Décor & More is a partnership between Texana Center and Associated Lumber Enterprises, a local lumber mill. The philosophy behind the partnership is to create a sustainable project in which adults with intellectual disabilities can fashion wood which would otherwise thrown away and create beautiful home and office décor. The wood, paint and other embellishments are re-purposed to reduce waste and improve our community. The program gives our clients the opportunity to learn new skills and experience the feeling of accomplishment and pride. Their enthusiasm is shown through their craftsmanship.
3 CUB SCOUTS HELP WITH CARD PROJECT Texana Center was delighted to be given the opportunity to speak to Cub Scout Pack 106 at the November meeting in Fulshear. Kate JohnsonPatagoc, Director, Specialized Services spoke to the boys about being community helpers and how Texana staff are community helpers because the work they do helps children with autism. Kate asked if the cub scouts would be willing to be community helpers and there was a resounding Yes. So, the cub scouts went to work on packing Holiday cards which were created by the children in our autism program. They also tied ribbons to make the packages look really attractive. Proceeds from the cards will benefit the Forward Together in Fulshear Capital Campaign to build a Texana campus in Fulshear. Not only did the cub scouts learn about community service, they also got to do a hands-on project. We would also like to thank Parkway Fellowship in Fulshear for allowing this meeting to take place in their gymnasium. Thank you to Cub Scout Pack 106
4 AUTISM FROM THE INSIDE PANEL DISCUSSION At a recent presentation at Fort Bend Library Justin Moehn approached Texana and said he would like to share his experience and answer questions for Texana s families, as a successful adult with autism. After meeting with Justin we decided to create a panel discussion. We invited Jeremy Pilloff and Kevin San Jose who are Behavior Technicians, and also students attending University of Houston and Wharton County Junior College respectively, to participate in the event. The idea was to allow the audience to benefit from hearing about the challenges of growing up with an autism diagnosis.from different perspectives. Debbie Elder, Owner/Director,Shady Oak Primary School was the moderator for the event, she asked and fielded question allowing each young man to talk about the barriers they have faced and the strategies that helped them achieve many successes in life. The discussion not only promoted awareness of autism, and help that is available, but also demonstrated a variety of ways that adults with an autism diagnosis can live happy, productive and successful lives. The main takeaway from the discussion is that they want to be treated the same way as everyone else. All in all it was a very successful event and we would like to thank everyone who took part and attended the event. L to R: Debbie Elder, Justin Moehn, Jeremy Pilloff & Kevin San Jose DONATIONS TO TEXANA S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Texana Center was recently invited to give a general talk about Texana and the Fulshear Campus by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas-CDA Court Sacred Heart of the Divine Mercy, Pattison, Texas. The group of ladies surprised Texana with a donation towards the Fulshear capital campaign. hank you for your generosity. Texana was excited to learn that the St. Faustina Knights of Columbus in Fulshear wanted to present a check for $2,000 to Kate Johnson-Patogoc for the Forward Together in Fulshear Capital Campaign. The donation was from their annual golf tournament which was held at Weston Lakes Country Club earlier in the year. L to R: CDA Regent Lorrie Rackar & Texana Board Member, Sue Fagan. L to R: Benny Brixenman, Father Dat, Kate Johnson-Patagoc & Tom Mersman
5 ELLEN CATOE APPOINTED TO TDLR ADVISORY BOARD Ellen Catoe, Senior Manager, Texana Children s Center for Autism was recently appointed to the behavior analysts advisory board for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR). She will be one of nine members serving on this Advisory Board and will serve for 6 years. Ellen is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Southern Methodist University. After college, she worked for a year at the New England Center for Children in their Staff Intensive Unit while she began work on her Master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis and transferred to Auburn University where she completed the degree. In 2005, she moved to Texas to work for Texana Center. While at Texana, she trained teachers in the greater Houston area on the principles and application of ABA. Since 2010 Ellen has managed the Children's Center for Autism which has three locations; Rosenberg, Sugar Land and most recently a smaller program in Fulshear. TDLR will begin issuing licenses to Behavior Analysts and Assistant Behavior Analysts no later than September 1, This is something that Texana s Board Certified Behavior Analysts advocated for as they wanted to established the necessary licensure to protect the well-being of children with autism, along with those with developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities, and with brain injuries to reduce the probability and the possibility of them being harmed by unqualified practitioners." Congratulations Ellen on your appointment, Texana is proud of you. SAVE THE DATE TEXANA TEE OFF Mark your calendar for the 2018 Texana Tee off which will take place on Monday, March 19 at the beautiful Weston lakes Country Club. We are counting on our previous sponsors, golfers and those who donated auction items to once again participate in this event and support the Forward Together in Fulshear Capital Campaign to build a Texana Campus in Fulshear.
