2 DEFINITION OF A VOLUNTEER Someone who contributes time, effort and talent to meet a need or further a mission, without any payment.

3 INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY As defined by the World Health Organization Intellectual disability means a significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information and to learn and apply new skills (impaired intelligence). This results in a reduced ability to cope independently (impaired social functioning), and begins before adulthood, with a lasting effect on development.

17 WE KNOW THAT: COMMUNITY INTEGRATION & WHY IT IS IMPORTANT Segregation does not contribute to the development of social and occupational skills of people with IDD Segregation leads to stigmatization of people who were different physically and mentally Volunteering alongside fully able people has helped our community to develop positive attitudes and relationships towards those with disabilities.

27 Exchange, America's Premier Service Club, working to make our communities better places to live. Exchange was established in 1911,has 22,000 members across the U.S. and has four programs of service: Americanism Community Youth Child Abuse Prevention

28 May 2011 Texana sponsored an Exchange Club for people with IDD. 1 st in Texas 2 nd in U.S. Charter Members

29 The Club functions same as other Exchange Clubs Board Each officer has a mentor 2 Texana staff 3 Exchangites from another club Members Pay Dues Club Meets twice a month 2 nd & 4 th Wednesdays at 12 noon

30 Permanent Organizational Meeting In attendance were the National Exchange President, 3 former National Presidents, 2 former District Presidents, 2 Club Presidents and 5 Members of other clubs. National President

34 CLUB FUNDRAISER The members visited 3 other Exchange Clubs to sell tickets. Approached neighbors, friends, Texana staff. Rosenberg Exchangites raised $1,200 To give to local non-profit organizations.

47 INTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY AS A RESULT OF VOLUNTEERING Volunteering allows us to expose typical people to those with disabilities, where they may never have had the opportunity before. Volunteering helps our community understand that people with IDD want the same things as they do; to be recognized, included and productive. Volunteering has helped to create awareness in our community of the work that Texana does, this in turn has helped with our fundraising efforts.
