Dr. Jennifer Endre Olson Psy.D. Course dates Sunday, 18 November 2012 Monday, 19 November 2012 & Tuesday, 20 November 2012 Time 9.00am 5.00pm (registration starts at 8.30am) Course venue To be confirmed To be confirmed 9.00am 5.00pm (registration starts at 8.30am on the first day) About the trainer Dr. Jennifer Olson holds a doctoral degree in clinical psychology with special emphasis in child and adolescent psychopathology. Dr. Olson received intensive training in pediatric psychology, developmental psychopathology, and developmental disabilities. She completed her doctoral internship at LaRabida Children's Hospital and Research Center in Chicago, IL and then received post-doctoral training at the University of Chicago with Catherine Lord, Ph.D, widely recognized as the foremost authority in the early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Lord is also the principle developer of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and codeveloper of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). It was at the University of Chicago with Dr. Lord that Dr. Olson became researcher reliable on these measures and certified by Dr. Lord as a UMACC independent trainer. Dr. Olson remains a UMACC certified independent trainer on both the ADI-R and the ADOS through her continued work with Dr. Catherine Lord at both the University of Michigan Autism and Communication Disorders Clinic and now at Weil Cornell Medical College. As an independent consultant she has been providing on-site trainings on the ADI-R and ADOS for both clinical purposes and their use in research for over 12 years and has conducted hundreds of trainings across 8 different countries. Dr. Olson continues to
2 pursue clinical research interests related to the use of these measures in diverse populations, particularly in developing countries such as India where as co-project lead of PICAN, the Provincial Autism Resource Center Indo-Canada Autism Network, she maintains a clinician/research Autism Training Institute. She remains active in ADI-R and ADOS data collection, training and reliability maintenance for longitudinal genetics studies including the CIHR Pathway's Project and Simons Simplex Study (SSC) & Simons Variation Individuals Projects (SVIP). She was recognized in B.C. Canada in 2006 with an Award for Service to the Autism Community and again in 2008 with an Education Award as part of the British Columbia Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN) for work done to set up a training-based province-wide network of diagnostic services and recurring refresher education programs. In establishing J.Olson Consulting, Dr. Olson has sought to provide training that is completely individualized, entirely suited to the needs of each site and with a depth and quality of detail that exceeds industry standards. ********************************************************************************************************************* ADOS 2 Course description Modules 1 through 4 by Catherine Lord, Ph.D., Michael Rutter, M.D., FRS, Pamela C. DiLavore, Ph.D., Susan Risi, Ph.D., Katherine Gotham, Ph.D., and Somer L. Bishop, Ph.D. Toddler Module by Catherine Lord, Ph.D., Rhiannon J. Luyster, Ph.D., Katherine Gotham, Ph.D., and Whitney Guthrie, B.A. Like its predecessor, the ADOS-2 is a semi-structured, standardized assessment of communication, social interaction, play, and restricted and repetitive behaviors. It presents various activities that elicit behaviors directly related to a diagnosis of ASD. By observing and coding these behaviors, you can obtain information that informs diagnosis, treatment planning, and educational placement. The ADOS-2 includes five modules, each requiring just 40 to 60 minutes to administer. The individual being evaluated is given only one module, selected on the basis of his or her expressive language level and chronological age. Following guidance provided in the manual, you choose the module that's appropriate for the individual you're evaluating. Toddler Module--for children between 12 and 30 months of age who do not consistently use phrase speech Module 1--for children 31 months and older who do not consistently use phrase speech Module 2--for children of any age who use phrase speech but are not verbally fluent Module 3--for verbally fluent children and young adolescents Module 4--for verbally fluent older adolescents and adults This revision improves an instrument already viewed as "the gold standard" for observational assessment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). With updated protocols, revised algorithms, a new Comparison Score, and a Toddler Module, the ADOS-2 provides a highly accurate picture of current symptoms, unaffected by language. It can be used to evaluate almost anyone suspected of having ASD--from 1-year-olds with no speech to adults who are verbally fluent. Standardized Administration, Coding, and Scoring
3 Each ADOS-2 module has its own Protocol Booklet, which structures the administration and guides you through coding and scoring. As you administer activities, you observe the examinee and take notes. Immediately afterward, you code the behaviors observed. Then you use the Algorithm Form for scoring. In Modules 1 through 4, algorithm scores are compared with cutoff scores to yield one of three classifications: Autism, Autism Spectrum, and Non-spectrum. The difference between autism and autism spectrum classifications is one of severity, with the former indicating more pronounced symptoms. In the Toddler Module, algorithms yield "ranges of concern" rather than classification scores. Improved Protocol Booklets, Revised Algorithms, and a New Comparison Score Administration and coding procedures for the ADOS-2 are functionally identical to those for the ADOS. Modules 1 through 4 retain the same basic activities and codes, though some codes have been expanded and several new codes have been added. Protocol Booklets for these modules have been significantly improved--they now provide clearer, more explicit administration and coding instructions. In the ADOS-2, algorithms for Modules 1 through 3 have been revised to achieve more accurate and useful results. These updated algorithms provide a more uniform basis for comparing results across the three modules that are used with children and young adolescents. A new Comparison Score for Modules 1 through 3 allows you to compare a child's overall level of autism spectrum-related symptoms to that of children diagnosed with ASD who are the same age and have similar language skills. This score also makes it easier to monitor an individual's symptoms over time. A continuous metric, the Comparison Score ranges from 1 to 10. However, to facilitate clinical interpretation it can also be expressed as one of four descriptive categories--from "no evidence of autism spectrum-related symptoms" to "a high level of autism spectrum-related symptoms." The new ADOS-2 scoring program helps you choose the correct algorithm, converts item codes to algorithm scores, adds up the algorithm, calculates the Comparison Score, and quickly arrives at an ADOS-2 classification or "range of concern." The New Toddler Module The Toddler Module is designed specifically for children between 12 and 30 months of age who do not consistently use phrase speech. Existing ADOS-2 components have been revised, and new components added, to more accurately identify toddlers at risk for ASD. The Toddler Module engages the child with loosely structured activities involving highly motivating materials. The goal, again, is to see if the child demonstrates behaviors associated with ASD. As in Modules 1 through 4, observations are coded immediately following administration, and the codes are converted to algorithm scores. However, Toddler Module algorithms provide "ranges of concern" rather than cutoff scores. These ranges help you form clinical impressions, but they avoid formal classification--which may not be appropriate at such a young age. The Toddler Module quantifies risk for ASD and signals the need for continued monitoring. Clinical demand for the use of the ADOS and now ADOS-2 has exponentially increased in recent years. Research indicates that while more and more infants and toddlers have come to the attention of medical personnel, the age of diagnosis has remained fairly stable as children enter into preschool or more formal schooling. In a study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, (Gotham, Risi, Pickles & Lord, 2007, The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule: Algorithms for Improved Diagnostic Validity) the authors of the ADOS reported that the ADOS over-diagnoses ASD in nonverbal children with mental ages under 15 months. While the ADOS is a very effective diagnostic measure of autism, specific challenges for assessing autism in very young children exist. Namely, the way in which the core symptoms of autism, impairments in communication and social reciprocity and the presence of restricted or repetitive behaviors and interests manifest can be very subtle as they emerge and are different depending on age and language level. For these reasons the authors developed the ADOS Toddler Module, which while retaining the spirit of the ADOS provides modified materials and routines, along with other new activities and codes all intended for children between 12 and 30 months of age who have not yet developed phrase speech. Requiring more structured support from the examiner and emphasizing social responses rather than bids for social initiation, the ADOS Toddler Module captures the variability in early behavior and indicates abnormality not in ADOS classifications but in the provision of ranges of concern scores. Similar to the training structure found in the ADOS-2 Clinical Training Courses, the additional days focus provided in the ADOS-2 Clinical Training Course on the Toddler Module reviews the materials and administrative aspects involved in use of the Toddler Module, presents video demonstrations of Toddler Module administrations for viewing and scoring by the participants and facilitates discussion related to consensus coding.
4 The Most Accurate Picture of Current ASD Symptoms With improved algorithms, the ADOS-2 demonstrates strong predictive validity. It gives you a highly accurate picture of current ASD-related symptoms, based on real-time observations. Physicians, clinical psychologists, school psychologists, speechlanguage pathologists, and occupational therapists rely on ADOS-2 results to inform diagnosis, intervention, educational placement, and treatment planning. Because it can be used with a wide range of children and adults, the ADOS-2 is an essential addition to any hospital, clinic, or school that serves individuals with developmental disorders. Clinical ADOS-2 Training Courses are usually conducted over 2 days and involve live administrations of the ADOS-2 modules on each day of the trainings (one per module pair), with participants observing Dr. Olson administer at least one of each module pair to a live volunteer and are expected to complete consensus coding. A third day of training is now available for focus on the Toddler Module as part of the Clinical ADOS-2 Trainings with Toddler Module. A word about Qualifications for ADOS Clinical Training These instruments should be used by professionals who are very familiar with Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders and who have education, training and experience in clinical interviewing and assessment of individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities. As a diagnostic measure intended to aid in diagnosis, the ADOS and ADOS-2 (including the Toddler Module) should be used by professionals qualified to give medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnoses. When used to aid in treatment planning or evaluation, the ADOS and ADOS-2 can be used by a wider array of clinicians (e.g., school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists) who, prior to the workshop have education, training and experience in using individually administered test batteries and who have a background and experience in the treatment of Autism. ************************************************************************************************************************************************* Course Fee Workshop ADOS 2 Toddler Module only (One day course) Early bird rate (Before 28 th September 2012) Extended to 15 October 2012 (Inclusive of 7% GST) Regular rate (Inclusive of 7% GST) S$963 S$ ADOS 2 (Module 1 to 4) two days clinician course only Both ADOS Toddler module & ADOS 2 (Module 1 to 4) two days clinician course S$ S$ (Special discounted price) S$ S$2682 (Special discounted price) Kindly take note: 1.
