This conference was dedicated to the retirement of Professor El Khamlichi after more than forty years of achievements. The conference was organized by the WFNS Rabat Reference Center, in collaboration with the Moroccan Society of Neurosurgery and the Education and Research Unit in Neurosurgery. The conference took place as follows: Clinical Course : the clinical course was scheduled on March 27-29, 2014 at Palais des Congrès, Skhirat. There were conferences followed by discussions dealing with the following topics : - Cerebrovascular malformations - Pediatric neurosurgery - Functional neurosurgery and radiosurgery - Head and spinal trauma - Central Nervous System Malformations - Skull Base Tumors - Evolution of neurosurgical practice in Africa - How I do it (in the context of Sub-Saharan countries) 29 international lecturers gave lectures during the course: 6 from African countries, 5 from Asia, 13 from Europe, 4 from North America, and 1 from South America. 79 participants from various African countries attended the course (Algeria, Benin, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal, and Tanzania). المركزالوطنيللترويضوالعلومالعصبية مستشفىالاختصاصات مصجابنسيناص.بالرباطمعاهد الهاتف: ( ) / الفاكس: ( ) Centre National de Réhabilitation et des Neurosciences Hôpital des Spécialités O.N.O. Raftopoulos, Brussels, Belgium) - Neurosurgical management of refractory trigeminal neuralgia (B. Abdennebi, Algiers, Algeria) - Functional Peripheral Nerve Surgery in the Treatment of pain and folcal spasticity (A.K. Msaddi, Dubai, UAE) - How does deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus work? (A. Benazzouz, Bordeaux, France) - Surgical Management of Parkinson disease (P. Cornu, Paris, France) - Management of AVM in consideration of recent evidence on their natural history and radiosurgical results (C. Lindquist, London, UK) Afternoon, two sessions were scheduled: Session III, co-chaired by Professor S. Ait Ben Ali (Marrakech, Morocco) and Professor A. El Ouarzazi - Spinal infections (A. Sidi Said, Algiers, Algeria) - Decompressive craniotomy, University of Alexandria, Egypt experience (M. El Fiki, Alexandria, Egypt) - The raccoon eye unmasked (R. Perrin, Toronto, Canada) - Indications and surgical technique of occipito-upper cervical spine fixation (B. Abdennebi, Algiers, Algeria) - Progress on neurosurgical training in Nigeria A review of our training model (B.B. Shehu, Lagos, Nigeria) Session IV, co-chaired by Professor B. El Mostarchid (Rabat, Morocco) and Professor R. El Maaqili - Management of severe spinal cord injury with stem cells (A. Ammar, Al Khobar, KSA) - Cervical arthroplasty: 15 years experience, where do we stand? (A. Ramadan, Geneva, Switzerland) - Surgery for spasticity: what is available, and who should get it? (G. Fieggen, Cape Town, South Africa) - Spine surgery in elderly: what s new in our daily practice? (R. Assaker, Lille, France) - Spinal navigation: where do we stand? (A.K. Msaddi, Dubai, UAE) All sessions were followed by discussions encouraging interaction between lecturers and participants. Beginning 08:00 pm, a dinner was offered for the lecturers and the Organizing Committee members, at L Amphitrite Palace. Page 2 of 6

Kanno, Nagoya, Japan) - Management of spinal cord tumors (R. Spetzler, Phoenix, USA) Session VI, co-chaired by Professor M.F. Chaoui (Fez, Morocco) and Professor M. El Azouzi - The potential impact of imaging and visualization technology in glioma surgery (A. Samii, Hannover, Germany) - Tumors of lateral ventricles in children (M. Choux, Marseille, France) - Approaches to deep structures in the brain (R. Spetzler, Phoenix, USA) - Microsurgical management of hypothalamic low grade gliomas (H. Bertalanffy, Hannover, Germany) - Strategies in the management of intracranial AVMs (Y.-K. Tu, Taipei, Taiwan) After lunch, a meeting of the WFNS Women in Neurosurgery Committee was held. Afternoon, one session was scheduled: Session VII, co-chaired by Professor Y. Bouzoubaa (Casablanca, Morocco) and Doctor L. Rifi - Neurosurgical management of pituitary tumors (R. Fahlbusch, Hannover, Germany) - Management of giant craniopharyngiomas (M. Samii, Hannover, Germany) - Chiari Type I malformation in children (C. Di Rocco, Roma, Italy) - 5 common mistakes in managing hemispheric tumors in children (G. Fieggen, Cape Town, South Africa) - Management of ependymomas in children (M. Choux, Marseille, France) Opening ceremony and tribute ceremony to honor Professor Abdeslam El Khamlichi: Beginning 06:30 pm, opening ceremony of the conference and tribute ceremony to honor Professor Abdeslam El Khamlichi and commemorate his retirement after more than forty years of achievements, were held at L Amphitrite Palace. The ceremony was chaired by their excellencies the State Minister, the Minister of Higher Education, and the Minister of National Education. Speeches were made during the ceremony, namely by the Minister of Higher Education (Prof. L. Daoudi), the Chairman of the Organizing Committee (Prof. A. El Ouahabi), the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat (Prof. M. Adnaoui), the President of the WFNS (Prof. Y.K. Tu), the WFNS Ambassador for Africa (Prof. M. Samii), the representative of African trainees at the WFNS Rabat Reference Center (Dr. H.M. Laminou), and many other personalities and colleagues (Prof. A.G. Fieggen, CAANS Interim President; Prof. A. Ammar, Pan Arab Neurosurgical Society; Prof. S. Ait Ben Ali, President of the Moroccan Society of Neurosurgery). All speakers have have paid tribute to Prof. A. El Khamlichi for his career and his tremendous work in the fields of care, education and research, which have gone way beyond the national boundaries of Morocco. The WFNS officers have also expressed their acknowledgement to the University Hospital Center of Rabat and the Moroccan authorities for the Page 3 of 6
4 great efforts they have developed in training neurosurgeons for the last 15 years at the WFNS Rabat Reference Center. Prof. El Khamlichi was the last to talk. He thanked the speakers, the guests, the organizers, and the Association of Students at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat who have given a music show during the ceremony. 6 Saturday, March 29, 2014 Morning, two sessions were scheduled: Session VIII, co-chaired by Professor A. El Azhari (Casablanca, Morocco) and Professor A. Sami (Casablanca, Morocco), with the following presentations: - Intracranial meningiomas: how to predict cleavability on imaging? (M. Sindou, Lyon, France) - Skull base surgery and the concept of value care (O. Al Mefty, Boston, USA) - Advances in aneurysms surgery (Y. Kato, Nagoya, Japan) - Aneurysms surgery: can we do better, and should we continue clipping them? (H. Azevedo, Recife, Brazil) - Recent treatment of AVM surgery (Y. Kato, Nagoya, Japan) Session IX, co-chaired by Professor S. Derraz (Rabat, Morocco) and Professor A. El Ouahabi - Gunshot wounds to the spine: is it worth to continue indicating decompressive laminectomy (H. Azevedo, Recife, Brazil) - How can we extend the retrosigmoid approach to the CP angle? (M. Samii, Hannover, Germany) - Surgery of cavernous sinus: fact or fiction? (J. Morcos, Miami, USA) - Epidermoid tumors: not all pearls (O. Al Mefty, Boston, USA) March 29 th, 2014, Free afternoon with golf competition or Rabat city tour. Beginning 02:00 pm, a free afternoon was scheduled, so lecturers could either participate in a golf competition or visit the city of Rabat. At 08:00 pm, a dinner was offered at El Khamlichis, with a distribution of prices to the winners in the golf competition. Live Surgery Workshop : the workshop took place on March 30 th at the National Center for Rehabilitation and Neurosciences. Two cases were operated, with video transmission to the conference room. 4 lecturers gave lectures during the workshop, and 20 participants from Morocco and various African countries attended the workshop. - Case of temporal lobectomy for epilepsy - Case of microcompression for trigeminal nerve neuralgia Conclusion: The conference was an opportunity for representatives of the WFNS, and responsibles of neurosurgery training programs in Africa (WFNS Rabat Reference Center and Africa 100 program) to exchange experience and improve their educational programs in favor of young African neurosurgeons. The WFNS officers have congratulated the WFNS Rabat Reference Center for its major role in training African neurosurgeons, and for improving the level of neurosurgery over the continent.
