Medical pioneers Jacob Christian Lindegaard, MD, and Kari Tanderup, MD, of the Aarhus University Hospital Department of Oncology in Aarhus, Denmark, are combining new image-guided brachytherapy techniques with external beam therapies to improve treatments and outcomes for gynecological cancer. By combining these two types of radiotherapy using Varian technology, Dr. Lindegaard and Dr. Tanderup are giving patients a better chance of maintaining a high quality of life after successful treatment. Shinichi Hori, MD, (foreground) treats disease by threading tiny catheters into the body through fragile blood vessels to reach the site of a lesion or obstruction and attack it with medications. An internationally known interventional radiologist at the Gate Tower Institute for Image-Guided Therapy in Osaka, Japan, Dr. Hori envisioned an imaging system that would give him a clearer view of vital peripheral areas during a procedure without having to move his patient.
