Call for Nominations For 2013 Officers and Nurse of the Year at August Chapter Meeting p2 Member Profile San Antonio Chapter 30 YEARS This Chapter s first meeting was in We weren t an ONS Chapter yet. We were an interest group. Many of the group were members of the Nurses Committee of the Bexar Metro Unit of the American Cancer Society. The Cancer Society supported our group in many ways. We held our board meetings for years at their building, our monthly educational meetings also. As you enjoy your meals at our dinner meetings, some of us remember actually cooking the meals for the meetings for a few of the early years. The first president was Barbara Carlile (Holmes) Damron. Barb was our president through Over the years, San Antonio Chapter has participated in three National ONS Congresses held in San Antonio. We have sponsored numerous Continuing Education Workshops, sponsored members to attend Congress, and provided scholarships to nursing students. It has been a GREAT 30 YEARS!!! 3 p.3 3 Have you SAVED A LIFE LATELY? By Beverly Frank Several weeks ago when I donated platelets I told the interviewer that I remember my mother having many pins for donating blood. Before I left that day, the people at the blood bank gave me my One Gallon Pin and my Two Gallon Pin! When I was working Oncology at Methodist Hospital, I would donate whenever they were looking for blood. (Of course, the blood bank has no record of these donations.) I would take the elevator to the first floor and run down the steps to the lab to get my usually very low blood pressure up enough to donate. As Oncology nurses, we certainly are aware of the amount of blood products we used to use before the advent of all the factors being used today. Did you know the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center has a great donor center? It is off of I-10 and Vance Jackson Rd. When you donate you have your own DVD player and ear phones, you can watch one of their movie collection or you can bring your own. During the platelet donation (which is now a one-arm procedure, unlike the two-arm procedure of yesteryear) the computer keeps track of your calcium and they hand out Tums for munching as needed. After the procedure there is some paperwork and an Hct test, then you get a snack, a gift (mug or T-shirt, etc). They sometimes have contests for a new vehicle! The time it takes for everything is around 2 hours. Before you donate platelets: no Aspirin or NSAIDs for several days before and you must have eaten a meal within two hours prior to donating. It is a pleasant experience, the personnel are really nice and attentive. Donations of RBCs are needed too. It is such a small thing to do for our patients. ONS Dream Catchers Our Chapter s RELAY for LIFE Team! By Hallworth The San Antonio Chapter ot ONS has participated in the ACS Relay for Life for the last 12 years. The Relay evolved into 15 locations where Relays were held, all at the same time! Twelve years ago we were there when there was only one location-olmos Basin Park. ACS has now combined all of the Relays into 4 main locations. In 2011 we were at the Winston School location. Some of the locations are really nice. Participation requires donations to the American Cancer Society. Our team raises funds for our donation by holding Yard Sales each Spring and Fall. The Relay is a FUN event and a great family time. My grandchildren in High School have participated since they were 1 st graders.participation gets young people involved and interested in community service and shows them that doing something for your community can be fun. Come join us this year! RELAY FOR LIFE 2012 Held yearly in the Spring. April or May. Dates TBA. An overnight relay event. Teams of people camp out around a track. Team members take turns walking around the track for the duration of the event. Family-friendly environment for the entire community. Because it s a Relay, you re not required to be there the entire time but it s so much fun, you ll probably find it hard to leave! 5 p.5 Certification Information 5 ONCC Certification Tests Qualify for GI Bill More OCN s in 2012! Our Chapter would like to encourage members to become certified in Oncology Nursing. How can the Chapter assist you in this area? Give your suggestions to any of the officers, and expecially talk to the Directors-At-Large: Beverly Frank Aley Geevarghese Jackie Kemp Lucile Teal For all of the ONCC certification tests, qualified veterans and individuals can receive reimbursement thru the GI Bill. The request for reimbursement must be received within one year of taking the test.
