RESEARCH Ongoing Research Support 1R01AI Cates, Joan R. (PI) 08/15/ /31/2018 NIH NIAID Normalizing preteen HPV vaccination with practice-based communication strategies This multiple baseline design study will deliver and evaluate an intervention using communication strategies in clinical practice settings to motivate healthcare providers, parents and preteen girls and boys to initiate and complete vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV). The intervention will include (1) print materials (posters and brochures) for parents; (2) flexible online training for providers; (3) text messaging among providers, parents and preteens (appointment reminders and motivational messages) and (4) web resources that provide games for preteens and educational resources for parents and providers. Role: Principal Investigator 3R01AI S1 Cates, Joan R. (PI) 04/08/ /31/2018 NIH NIAID This supplement is to support diversity in the research staff for the project. Completed Research Support RO1MD Adimora, Adaora A. (PI) 04/01/ /31/2015 NIH NIMHD HIV Prevention among African Americans: A Media Campaign This project developed and evaluated a theoretically based mass communication campaign in 7 rural North Carolina counties to decrease African Americans participation in concurrent sexual partnerships and thereby reduce patterns important in HIV transmission. Specific aims were to (1) construct prevention messages and communication strategies that targeted participation in concurrent partnerships; (2) design and implement a culturally competent eight-month mass communication campaign to inform African Americans about the relationship between concurrency and HIV transmission; and (3) evaluate the campaign s effects on African Americans attitudes, beliefs and norms about concurrency, reported participation in concurrent partnerships and condom use. 8

9 Role: Co-Investigator Investigator initiated Studies Program Coyne-Beasley, Tamera (PI) 07/01/ /30/2014 Merck and Co. This project is a case-control study to compare the effectiveness of an intervention using text messaging and a social networking site to facilitate completion of the 3-dose series of HPV vaccination in males and females. The objectives were to (1) determine the factors that facilitate initiation and completion of the 3-dose series of HPV vaccination in males and females, ages 11-21; (2) develop and test intervention(s) using social media (texting and Facebook) to facilitate completion of the HPV 3-dose vaccination series among males and females (gender neutral vs. gender specific messages); and (3) determine if the social media interventions also facilitate initiation and completion of other recommended adolescent vaccines. Role: Co-Investigator 1R21A A1 Cates, Joan R.(PI) 3/15/12-5/28/14 NIH NIAID Optimizing HPV Vaccination: Parents, Providers and Pre-teen Boys This project used dissemination strategies to stimulate communication about HPV vaccine among parents, healthcare providers and pre-teen boys at a critical time when the vaccine was new to both parents and clinical practice. The intervention in a 13 county region in North Carolina included (1) a social marketing campaign for parents with radio announcements, posters and brochures, and (2) collaboration with healthcare providers of pre-teen boys using posters and brochures to stimulate parent awareness of HPV vaccine for males. The overall objective was to assess the extent to which parents and providers respond to dissemination strategies by deciding on HPV vaccine for pre-teen boys. A Cox proportional hazards model for the NC Immunization Registry data showed an intervention effect (HR=1.34, p=.0024), as the probability of vaccination increased by 34% in the intervention counties relative to control counties during the three months of the intervention. Role: Principal Investigator Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Coyne-Beasley, Tamera (PI) 07/01/ /31/2012 UCRF, UNC-Chapel Hill Reducing HPV-Attributable Cancers through HPV Vaccination an Interactive Technology Based Approach for Adolescents in School Based Health Centers This project examined telemedicine and telephone texting as an interactive intervention in middle schools to increase awareness and knowledge of HPV-related disease and increase HPV vaccination, especially among male students. Two North Carolina rural schools with school based health centers were study sites. The study will lay the groundwork for school based health programs about prevention of HPV infection and associated cancers and disease. Role: Co-Investigator 9

10 University Research Council, Cates, Joan R. (PI) 05/01/ /30/2012 UNC- Chapel Hill HPV Vaccination for Adolescent Boys: Media Messages for Parents This project addressed a rare opportunity to conduct communication research on a medical innovation, HPV vaccine for males. Through intercept surveys with parents of boys ages 9-13, the research refined media messages that will ultimately work to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in HPV-related disease through HPV vaccination in early adolescence. The study will lay the groundwork for communication-based interventions. Role: Principal Investigator 10KR10803 North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NC TraCS) Cates, Joan R. (PI) 3/01/ /28/2010 This project was supported by Award Number UL1RR from the NIH National Center for Research Resources. Addressing Racial and Gender Disparities in HPV Vaccine Acceptability: African American Caregivers of Adolescent Boys This study identified reasons for African American caregivers interest in having their adolescent sons vaccinated against HPV, their preferred communication channels and sources, and reactions to potential media messages about the HPV vaccine for males.
