1 BIO 364: Laboratory Techniques in Cancer Biology Syllabus for Fall 2017 Course Description This course will introduce contemporary concepts of cancer initiation, progression, metastasis and therapy. The lectures and recitations will include discussions of appropriate review articles, textbook readings and research articles. In the laboratory, students will be introduced to and recapitulate key techniques used in the selected research articles. This course will require significant work on computers outside of class time (more than 3 hours per week). This course has an associated fee. Please see for more information. 2 Course Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be able to summarize the prevailing theories of cancer development and treatment. 2. Students will differentiate between interventions that prevent cancer and interventions that treat cancer. 3. Students will be able to explain at least one type of experiment used in cancer research. 4. Students will be able to read and summarize a research paper in cancer biology. 5. Students will speak directly with a cancer research scientist about a topic of interest to the student. 6. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following laboratory techniques: SDS PAGE Immunofluorescence microarray analysis Western Blotting Flow Cytometry Proliferative assay (i.e. MTT) ELISA Immunoprecipitation PCR (including RT-PCR and qpcr) Class Protocols Please remember that the BIO 364 scientists and physicians will share their knowledge and enthusiasm with you. Please give them your respect and courtesy by being attentive and on-time for class. Cell phones must be turned off during lectures, recitations and laboratory sessions. Laptop computers may be used to take notes during lectures. Internet surfing, ing, texting, or any other non-courserelated activities during lectures, recitations or labs are not permitted and will result in loss of attendance/participation points for each occurrence. Attendance and Make-up Policy Attendance and participation in all lectures, recitations and laboratory sessions is mandatory. Late submission of homework/assignments will not be accepted. Make-up recitations or lab sessions will not be available. Attendance at all exams is mandatory. Makeup exams will be provided only for legitimate and documented absences and at the discretion of the instructors. In the case of verifiable illness, family emergency, or University-sanctioned religious holiday (arrangements must be made in advance), the excuse must be documented on official letterhead and will be verified by the instructors. Absences for participation in University-sanctioned events must be arranged at the beginning of the semester. For student responsibilities regarding absences due to University-sanctioned events see: n_univsponsered_activities.php Appeal Process: After assignments are returned or exam scores provided, you may appeal the grading of specific sections or questions. You must provide a short, coherent, neatly written explanation of your reasons for requesting regrading. The appeal must be received no later than two business days after the exam score is posted or the assignment is returned. All appeals turned in at a later time will be declined. If your appeal is justified in the judgment of the faculty, a score correction will be applied.
