20 Coconut water works at cellular level Cytokinins are a class of plant hormones. When cytokinins are present, the cells can then replicate to form a perfect copy of its DNA. If they are not present, imperfect cells are formed resulting in future chronic illnesses. Coconut water contains concentrated amounts of these Cytokinins. 20

21 A major cytokinin found in coconut milk was isolated using a standard procedure, the tobacco callus growth promoting assay. The structure was determined to be a complex trans-zeatin riboside (G3A2-ZR). The authors of this study attributed at least 20% of the cytokinin activity in coconut milk to this compound. 21

32 Two Probable Mechanisms Of Cell Growth Promotion By Cococin Coconut water is used as a nutrient medium in plant tissue culture. 35 Wound Healing and Fibroblast The arrival of fibroblasts cells into the wound, heralds the healing process. Eventually, these Fibroblasts become the dominant cell type, during healing process. As the Fibroblasts proliferate, the keratinocyte and endothelial cell populations are also stimulated to increase their numbers. Thus an active, which promotes the proliferation of Fibroblasts has good wound healing potential. 35

37 Cococin vs Foetal bovine serum Cococin was shown to promote the proliferation of fibroblasts and hence can be inferred to have good wound healing potential. 37

47 MonoLaurin MCTs are well recognized for their antimicrobial properties since antiquity. Lauric acid, a MCT present in good concentrations in coconuts, forms MonoLaurin in the body. MonoLaurin is reported to significantly inhibit the growth of pathogenic microbes. In vitro, MonoLaurin s effects mirrored Origanum oil in inhibiting S. aureus. 47

48 MCT content in Coconut Fresh coconut / unrefined or Virgin Coconut oil is highly saturated; over 85-90% of its fat content is saturated. Saturated fatty acids may be (a) short chain 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms (b) medium chain 6, 8, 10 or 12 carbon atoms (c) long chain 16 or more carbon atoms. About 60-70% of the fatty acidsin coconut oil are 12 carbon atoms or shorter, thus making it a rich source of MCTs. Coconut oil is high in lauric acid (12 carbon atoms) and contains trace amounts of caprylic acid (8 carbon atoms).
