The Censuses of 1881 and 1891 told us that he was born in Bollington.. Edward and Harriet were still living in Bollington at the time of Samuel s baptism at Barnton Church on 18 th June Edward was a police officer at Bollington. Samuel s father, Edward, was a Barnton man, formerly of Catchwell Cottage, Runcorn Road, Barnton, Northwich and the family returned to Barnton before Samuel was 5 years old. BBBBGB In the 1881 Census Samuel was aged 5 years, and he was living in Oakwood Lane, Barnton with his parents. After the death of his grandfather, Peter, in 1889, the family moved the short distance into Catchwell Cottage on Runcorn Road, Barnton. At the time of the 1891 Census Samuel was aged 15 years, and he was still with his parents, and 5 siblings at Catchwell Cottage. He was working as a Cooper. Ten years later Sam was still a Cooper. The 1901 Census told us he was 25 years of age and he was still living with his parents, four brothers and a sister. The old, characterful, black and white, Catchwell Cottage had been demolished in 1900 and a new house, The Poplars, had been built on the same site. The address was 88 Runcorn Road, Barnton.

2 1876SAMU/2 In Sam s younger days he played football for Northwich Victoria F.C. (as did his cousin George Hindley). Sam s father, and a partner, had started a factory on the banks of the river Weaver at Acton Bridge around 1903 which was called the Weaver Refining Company. Sam, and several family members, joined the firm. His first job was collecting bones for the business which were used for making glues and fertilisers. On 29 th August 1906 Sam married Bertha Sefton of 73 James Street, Macclesfield at St. George s Church in the Parish of Sutton, which is close to Macclesfield. Brother Fred was a witness. The other Hindley signature (on the bottom line) might be a b for Beatrice (Fred s wife). After Samuel married Bertha Sefton they lived at 88, Runcorn Road, Barnton. After a while (and before 1911) they moved to 42 Hardshaw Street, St. Helens, Lancashire. Samuel began his own business in Waterloo Street. He bought and sold scrap metal, Army surplus and many odds and ends including rabbit skins which were mostly for making hats. In St. Helens he was known as Honest Sam - everyone trusted him. At the time of the 1911 Census Samuel was 34 years old and Bertha was 28. There were just the two of them at 44 Hardshaw Street, St. Helens.

They took a boat from Liverpool to La Pallice (La Rochelle). They were travelling second class on board the ORCOMA of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company. The boat, which departed on 28 th August 1930, with 77 passengers was heading for Valparaiso in Chile. Two of the passengers were Samuel and Bertha Hindley of Lynton, Regents Road, St. Helens. Samuel, aged 54, was listed as a Merchant, and Bertha was 48 years of age.

Sammy Hindley's was a well known institution in St Helens, more of a scrap yard or recyclers than a bone processing business. In fact apart from the bones in the old bathtub 'maggot hatchery', I don't think there were any animal parts around. Waterloo Street might have been a working class residential area but I think even then there were laws to protect the neighbours from the extremes of smell and putrefaction. Apart from which, Widnes was the epicentre of the animal parts processing industry. The business, still referred to as Sammy Hindleys was still running in Waterloo Street in the 1950s. As lads we used to earn a few pennies by taking old woollens there where a whole gang of toothless crones used to sit sorting out the stuff that came in on his rag and bone cart. It really was like a scene from a Dickens novel. We also went there for maggots for fishing. From memory there was an old bath-tub with a pile of old bones and rotting meat in it. The smell was spectacular as were the swarms of blue-bottles on the stuff. One of the men used to take our empty jam-jar, scoop up a few handfuls of the maggots into it and charge us 3d (just over 1p new money)

6 1876SAMU/6 My memory of the place is of a largish shed, open-fronted and full of old rags and discarded clothes etc with old crones shuffling through them and throwing stuff into separate piles. The yard itself housed a huge assortment of discarded metal goods and at least one pony and cart (its driver was clearly a WW1 veteran as he had a wooden peg-leg). This driver used to take his cart along all the back service lanes or entries as they were known in St Helens and had a very bizarre call - 'rag bone-a-bone-a-bone-a-bone', but as far as I can recall he wasn't after bones but old metal and clothes. Keep prodding our members and there may be other recollections out there. I'm 68 and there are many members older than me who lived maybe closer to Waterloo Street than I did. Alan Sammy Hindley's was a scrap yard, with rag collectors and sorters, and a maggot-breeding enterprise but the stink of the place on a hot summer day! When all else failed you could always get a few coppers for jam jars or bundles of clothes, the good old days! There was big old cast-iron bath where he bred maggots on rotten meat, you could smell it from two streets away. The whole place was like a scene from a Dickens novel with gnarled old hags sorting rags. I can see it and smell it now. S HINDLEY MARINE STORE - in the shadow of Windle Pilk on the corner of Water St and Waterloo St. I remember is going into the yard through a narrow passageway surrounded on either side by scrap. I remember buying telescopic radio aerials off tanks to make fishing rods. They collapsed down to about 18". It seems strange now that you could get a penny each for a jam jar, now I suppose everyone recycles, your right about it smelling and about the women who used to sort the rags, Dickensian alright, but there again was not the whole area something from a bygone day? It used to be a great insult if someone at school implied you had got your clothes from Sammy Hindleys. I can always remember my mum straightening my clothes and giving me the once over with the wet hanky. If I looked a bit off she would say I looked like I had come from Sammy Hindley's and I never knew what she meant... till now!

7 SAMUEL, HINDLEY ( ) 1876SAMU/7 Sam owned a massive motor cycle called "Royal Ruby" and he also owned a tiny car. He was a special constable during the Second World War.
