1 Special Greetings to Alumni from the Arts Leadership Program! This is waaaaay overdue. I d like to say I have a good excuse, but you re important and there is just no excuse for making sure we stay connected. I am constantly amazed but what you are doing. So here s an update with a LOT of information about our alumni. And if you re not part of the ALP facebook group and would like to be, let me know it is easy to join. Be sure to keep in touch. Enjoy! October 2011 IML Spotlight: Rey Cortés After completing a Masters in Music in Euphonium Performance and receiving an Arts Leadership Certi:icate from the ALP, Rey David Cortés worked for the Institute for Music Leadership for two years on the Polyphonic.org project. In 2010, he made his way back to his home in Costa Rica, and sought to shape his lifestyle around his love and passion for music. Hear what Rey has to say about ALP. Summer and Post Graduate Internships Don t forget that as an ALP alum, you are eligible to apply for a summer or post graduate internships. Summer internship ideas are posted on the getting started ideas and local web pages. These are updated from time to time, so check back in regularly if you re thinking about this as an option. 3 of Wisconsin Madison in trombone performance. He was given a University Fellowship, which funded him in full. The fellowship is an academics-oriented, university-wide award that was based on his professional and academic success which the last 3 years he could not have accomplished without ALP. Ryan Gardner (BM 03) was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Oklahoma State University. After Eastman, he received a Master s degree from Rice, and then a doctorate from Manhattan School of Music. He worked as Assistant Professor of High Brass at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith from 2008 until this recent appointment. He says ALP certainly prepared him for his career as a college professor and free-lance musician. Knowing the business end of the music Uield including how to market himself, write grants, etc. really paid off. See more about Ryan here. Dylan Smith (BM 10) leaves his job (also fueled by an ALP internship) as Artistic Coordinator of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to return to school for a master s in trumpet performance at Southern Methodist University. This past summer Dylan was also awarded a fellowship position with the National Orchestral Institute. See more about Dylan here. Catie Hickey (BM 07) is on the move again, this time to take a position as the trombone professor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. She also continues to perform as a member of The Foothills Brass Quintet based in Calgary. Watch the ALP facebook page soon for Catie s feature as next month s IML Spotlight. Ben Warsaw (BM 05, MM 07) recently completed his DMA in piano performance at Boston University. He is currently teaching in the Atlanta area as an adjunct at Georgia Perimeter College and the Georgia Academy of Music at Westminster, along with his private studio. Read more about Ben here. Anna Reguero (BM/BA 05) leaves her job as one of the principal arts reporters/critics for the Democrat and Chronicle to return to school for a MA/PhD in Music History and Theory at SUNY Stonybrook, where she is also a teaching assistant. Rochester will certainly miss her! Andy Smith (MM 09) changes from full time to part time Parts Manager at Conn-Selmer to complete his doctorate in tuba performance at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. Nicole (Cragin) Davis (BM 11) was recently appointed Patron 3 of 7 7/24/17, 3:51 PM

4 Engagement Manager at the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Nicole spent a summer as an ALP intern with Memphis Symphony in 2010, working with then Chief Operating OfUice Lisa Dixon (BM 04). Tenly (Polhemus) Williams (BM 01) was recently elected to serve as musician director for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra Board of Directors. Read Tenly s blog and learn more about her here. Doug O Connor (MM 08, DMA in process) and Sean Connors (in pic) (BM 04, DMA in process) were recently appointed to teaching positions at the University of Wisconsin. Doug is Associate Lecturer of saxophone at the Eau Claire campus. Sean is professor of percussion at the Stevens Point campus. The two are collaborating on an October 23rd concert featuring pieces for saxophone and marimba. I think it was a good thing to have the word Connor in your name in Wisconsin. Eric Goldman (BM 02) is now Senior Consultant at Graham Pelton Consulting in Washington DC, a leading fundraising consulting Uirm helping nonprouit organizations carry out their visions and exceed their expectations. Jason Price (MM 04, DMA 05) was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Sound Design in the Department of Theatre at Michigan State University. (I m a Go Blue fan all the way, but I won t hold it against him.) Jason also performs with Alarm Will Sound. Read more about Jason here and here. Lauren Woodward (BM 07) was recently appointed Artistic Program Coordinator at Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA. Previous positions included Assistant Artistic Administrator at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Operations and Community Engagement intern at the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Her position in Memphis was a year-long position funded as an ALP post graduate intern. Casey Molino Dunn (MM 08) was recently appointed to a new 4 of 7 7/24/17, 3:51 PM

5 position as Deputy Director of the Manhattan School of Music s Center for Music Entrepreneurship. His responsibilities will include some teaching and will call upon his arts administration/publicity, career services and musical backgrounds, including experience gained through positions at the Juilliard School of Music and Eastman s OfUice of Careers and Professional Development. He continues to maintain an active performance and music ministry career in the NYC/NJ area. Read more about Casey here. Congratulations to Rachael Young (BM 06) on winning the position of 2 nd Bassoonist with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. Eryn Bauer (BM 10) is excited to announce that she will be starting a full time position as Operations Manager with Ars Lyrica Houston in January She s been working as Development Coordinator for Young Audiences of Houston (YAH) in addition to teaching and performing in the Houston area. Eryn turned an ALP internship held in the summer of 2010 with YAH into a part time position with them, with many thanks to Eastman alum Todd Frazier (BM 92) who was most interested in Eryn s experience and capabilities. Eryn said the interviewing process for internships for her ALP certiuicate deuinitely helped with the whole process. Eryn also continues to perform with the award winning Arabesque Winds. Rebecca Weissman (MA 06) is now Manager of Artist Relations at Verne Q. Powell Flutes. Yorgos Kouritas (DMA in progress) is now Music Director of the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Awards, kudos, and all the rest Daniel Felix Ungar (DMA in progress) has been awarded a Fulbright Research Grant and is spending the academic year at Taipei University of the Arts in Taiwan. He will be studying contemporary Taiwanese works for viola. Shizuo Z Kuwahara (BM 99) was the winner of the Augusta Arts Council Arts Professional award for Shizuo is currently the Music Director of the Symphony Orchestra Augusta. Read more about Z here. Jeffrey Meyer (BM 04) is spending the academic year in Mexico City with his wife, Mary-Elizabeth. She is on a Fulbright grant to study contemporary Mexican music for Ulute. Chisato Eda Marling (DMA 08) was recently selected to be a Vandoren artist for saxophone. She also continues to be a member of the Vertex Saxophone Quartet, founded in 2010 and 5 of 7 7/24/17, 3:51 PM

Courtney Hershey Bress (BM 97), Principal Harp for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, enjoyed performing this summer with the Symphony and the group Chicago at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Matilda Hofman (MM 09) announces that a CD The Glory Tree featuring her group, Kreisler Ensemble, has been recently released by Champs Hill Records. You can Uind it on Amazon. Matilda recently conducted on Luigi Nono s Prometeo at the Salzburg Festival and the Berlin Festspiele. Anna Dagmar (BM 01) is working on her 4 th album, currently dubbed Album4 A Rock Project in New York, NY. Successfully funded by Kickstarter, Anna is keeping everyone posted of her progress on her Kickstarter site. Read more about it here. (And be sure to click on the Updates tab.) Fun! Steve Danyew (MM 10) had his newest work for wind ensemble, Distant Moons, recently premiered by the Eastman Wind Ensemble.
