1 Ystrad Mynach Community Partnership Youth Facilities Consultation May th 27 For more information please contact: Rebecca Anthony Communities Research Support Officer

2 Background In September 26, two young boys from Ystrad Mynach had written and sent a petition to Caerphilly County Borough Council requesting a skate park facility. Due to limited budgets, the letter was passed onto the Ystrad Mynach village partnership to take forward. The partnership decided that if it was ever going to gain funding for such a facility they would first need to establish whether there was actually a need amongst the young people for a skateboard park and whether such a facility would be regularly used. Therefore, on Friday th May 27 in the Moriah Christian Centre s Youth Club, the Ystrad Mynach Partnership carried out a consultation with the young people of Ystrad Mynach to ask them about youth facilities in their area. The young people were asked to participate in a Who Wants to be a Millionaire activity. The young people involved in the consultation got the opportunity to enjoy a chocolate fountain once the activity was complete as a reward for their efforts. Who wants to be a Millionaire Young people were given a handheld voting pad (similar to that used in the quiz show Who wants to be a Millionaire? ) and were asked a series of questions about youth activities in Ystrad Mynach. The questions covered young people s activities and youth facilities. Eighty-three children and young people participated in this activity in three different groups. The questions were displayed on a screen to the young people and facilitators read out the questions and told the young people when they could start to vote. Each young person was only able to vote for one answer, they had 2 seconds to choose their answer and could change their vote if they changed their mind within 2 seconds. te that N in brackets refers to the number of responses received for each question. t all of the young people answered every question. All results are given to the nearest percent; therefore percentages may not always add up to % due to the effect of rounding. The young people were asked about the following: Participation in sport Your Spare time Would you use the a MUGA if one was available in Ystrad Mynach Would you use a skateboard Park if one was available in Ystrad Mynach Would you use a kick wall if one was available in Ystrad Mynach Would you use a youth shelter if one was available in Ystrad Mynach Which youth facility would you prefer to have Which location would be the best for a youth facility Do you use the Skate park in Nelson or Llanbradach

3 Profile of the Young People In order to look at their responses in detail, young people participating in this session were asked to give their age and gender. There were slightly more girls than boys (43 girls, 36 boys). Participants ranged in age between 9 and 16. This information is shown in the graphs below.
