All members were welcomed and introduced themselves. Review and Approval of Minutes The minutes from the meeting held on July 25, 2016 were reviewed. Dr. Thurer motioned to approve the minutes and John Michael Pierobon seconded the motion. Members of the unanimously approved the minutes from July 25, Updates from the Chair Bill Amodeo gave the Updates from the Chair report on behalf of Georgette Kores. Unfortunately, Mrs. Kores was unable to attend the meeting due to a previously scheduled conference out of town. Members interested in taking on a leadership role are encouraged to contact the 1

2 The committee s membership recruitment initiative was briefly discussed and members were asked to invite one person to the next meeting. In discussing this topic, a few suggestions were made on how to recruit new members and engage existing members. A suggestion was made to review the membership list and write a letter to ask members at large to become more active in the committee. It was also suggested to engage organizations that have new staff to invite them to become a member of the committee. The last suggestion given was to invite politically active campaigners that are passionate about local issues, such as tobacco policy, to become members. Dr. Valerie Turner, the Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade Liaison, gave the Executive Board Update and discussed the upcoming elections for all Consortium committees. The Executive Board is working to finalize the Consortium Bylaws and a strategic planning session will be held at the September 29 th Executive Board meeting. Elections are slated to occur at the November meetings for all committees. Members who are interested in taking on a leadership role are encouraged to contact the committee liaison to get more details. Point of Sale Training A brief presentation about the Point of Sale Surveillance Initiative was given by Nikki Chuck. The presentation detailed the purpose of the point of sale initiative, the surveillance process, number of stores to be assessed as well as the assistance that will be needed from partnership members. After the presentation, the committee reviewed the point of sale study letter and suggested revisions. The letter briefly discusses the project and will be given to store owners and managers when necessary. It was suggested that the letter also be translated to Spanish and Creole. Revisions will be made and sent to the committee for review. Recommendations on entities to contact to get committee liaison, Islamiyat Nancy Adebisi, for more details. An will be sent to members with a copy of the Point of Sale Study letter for the point of sale surveillance initiative. The letter will be sent for translation into Spanish and Creole. 2

3 Subcommittee and Workgroup Updates volunteers for this initiative included SWAT members, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, local high school counselors and local colleges. Members interested in volunteering and with potential contacts for volunteers were noted. Policy & Surveillance Bill Amodeo gave the Policy & Surveillance subcommittee update which focused on Tobacco 21. An article written by John Michael Pierobon on the issue, previously shared by with the committee, was shared again with members present. The discussion noted current legislators who would be against this legislation at the state level along with other tobacco related legislation. It was suggested that the workgroup start work to push this issue locally and get local municipalities to raise the age of tobacco sale to 21. Bill Amodeo also shared with the committee sample palm card designs. They were reviewed by members and a design was selected. Bill will work on finalizing the committee selected design with the committee liaison. Postcard design will be finalized by Bill Amodeo. Letter to Walgreens to encourage not to sell tobacco and Restaurant letter will be drafted by Judy Futerfas. Communications & Public Relations On behalf of Subcommittee Chair Judy Futerfas a brief update was given by Islamiyat Adebisi. The subcommittee chair drafted the Restaurant Letter in response to the issue noted at the previous meeting about secondhand smoke exposure at Blue Collar Miami. Members noted that it would be good to do a letter campaign to restaurants in Miami Dade to designate one night as a smoke free night. The committee also recommended that a letter be sent to Walgreens to encourage them not to sell tobacco products. Tobacco Free Workplaces and Cessation Islamiyat Adebisi provided a brief recap on the Tobacco Free Workplace Summit held on September 9,

4 Miami Dade AHEC as well as a number of our partnership members participated and were thanked for their contribution to the event. From the event, new employers have been noted as interested in going tobacco free and meetings will be scheduled to provide technical assistance to support these employers in becoming tobacco free. Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing Islamiyat Adebisi gave an update on smoke-free multi-unit housing. Work continues with assisting local multiunit housing properties, which include apartment complexes and condominiums, in going smoke free. Partners were encouraged to provide the names of smoke free properties so that they could be added to the Healthy Happens Here List. A suggestion was made to contact contractors in order to get policies implemented from the ground up. Students Working Against Tobacco Francesca Davis gave an update on the Miami Dade Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Chapter. SWAT clubs are back to work with the start of the new school year and have been recruiting new members. One SWAT Club, Southwest High School, was highlighted for recruiting over 200 members. The committee was invited to attend the City of Hialeah s 10 th Annual Tobacco Prevention Summit that will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 5-10pm at Goodlet Park. The event is open to the community and will have a number of family friendly activities to educate the community on the importance of tobacco free lifestyles. SWAT members will also be present and active at this event. The upcoming SWAT Trainings that will be held in November were also noted. Point of Sale and Young Adult Interventions 4

5 An update was given by Nikki Chuck in regards to the Point of Sale Initiative and Young Adult Interventions Initiative. For Point of Sale, members were encouraged once again to volunteer and spread the word on the surveillance initiative. For the Young Adult Interventions Initiative, Barry University was highlighted for being a tobacco free university. Eileen Hineline from Barry University was thanked for being the champion and lead at the university that helped make this possible. Great American Smoke Out activities are being planned with Barry University, Florida National University, University of Miami and Miami Dade College in observation of the tobacco free holiday at their respective schools. PICH-Public Housing/Senior Residential A PICH update was given by Kuan-Jan Ding. To date, the City of Hialeah Public Housing properties have been surveyed and a follow up meeting will be scheduled to discuss policy creation and implementation. The City s public housing authority plans to have their policy in place by summer The City of Miami Beach Public Housing Authority is also currently drafting their smoke-free policy. Presentations and surveys were also completed at Deedco Gardens. The property manager expressed interest in creating a smoke free policy for their property. Staff are also working on a pilot education program on secondhand smoke exposure and cessation resources with CNC Management properties. The hope is this pilot will be successful and lead to policy change at the 17 senior properties the company oversees. 5

6 Discussion, Comments and Announcements CONSORTIUM FOR A HEALTHIER MIAMI-DADE Discussion was held about helping Psychiatric facilities and Behavioral health facilities to go smoke free. A decision was made to add Psychiatric facilities and Behavioral health facilities that are smoke free to the Healthy Happens Here List. A survey was also suggested to survey these facilities on what policies they have in place. John Michael Pierobon gave an update on the Youth Summer Essay Contest. The contest ended last week and there were two winners this year. Thoughts of making the contest a year round contest and raising the age to 21 to involve college students were discussed. The committee voted to support the initiative again. An announcement was made by Bill Amodeo about the City of Miami Gardens Paint the City Pink Walk and Health Resource Fair event being held this weekend on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreation Complex. Closing/Adjourn The meeting was adjourned at 11:13am. The next meeting will be held on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 9:30am.
