3 Then and Now Then and Now While the team of the UW Health Transplant Program and UW Organ and Tissue Donation have helped grieving families, living donors and transplant recipients through the hardest time of their lives, we know that the real courage lies in the patients and families themselves. These people have been able to persevere and, indeed, thrive despite difficult or tragic circumstances. Though the act of donation and the resulting transplant is life-changing, what happens afterward is remarkable. Donor families, transplant recipients and living donors feel the need to make yet another difference in their communities some through their support of organ donation efforts, and others through volunteerism or by making life better for their families and those with whom they work. The people in this calendar have made the most of their experience between then and now. The adults have used the years between then the time of donation or transplant and now to give back to others, and the children eagerly look forward to what they can do in the future. We re proud to work with patients and families as they transition from then to now and are grateful to be part of that process.

4 Highlights from the UW Health Transplant Program Having completed more than 14,000 transplants, our program is currently the fourth largest in the nation. As a Department of Veterans Affairsapproved center, we serve America s veterans who require kidney, liver, heart or lung transplantation. We are a certified living kidney and living liver donation program, having served nearly 3,000 living donors. Learn referral information, contact staff and/or make a referral through our liver app and pancreas app or online at uwhealth.org/ transplantreferral Our team serves kidney, pancreas, liver, lung, heart, islet, pediatric and multi-organ transplant patients. 6 Highlights from UW Organ and Tissue Donation In 2016, our team served 150 donors, the most ever in the history of the program. Those gifts resulted in 457 organs available for transplant, saving the lives of 399 recipients. A record-breaking year! Additionally, the team served 223 tissue donors, making thousands of lifeimproving gifts available for transplant. 3 million registered donors Our work to improve the number of lungs recovered for transplant resulted in a remarkable outcome. In a threemonth trial of the team s protocol, nine people were saved using lungs that previously may have been deemed unusable. These new protocols are now in place and continue to provide more lungs and life-saving results. Our community outreach team worked with Donate Life Wisconsin to place new donation promotion materials in Wisconsin s 92 DMV Service Centers. This work contributes to the almost 3 million registered organ, tissue and eye donors in Wisconsin.

8 David A retired attorney, David Nordin is no stranger to research. So when he learned he needed a pancreas/kidney transplant more than 20 years ago, the Naperville, Illinois man immediately began investigating his options. He learned that the UW Health Transplant Program is one of the best in the nation, so he chose this program for his care, and was listed for transplant. David received the gift of life on August 17, Deeply motivated by gratitude for his teenage organ donor, David vowed that he would spend the rest of his life paying it forward. When he retired a few years ago, he began this work in earnest. Then: Now: Pancreas transplant was an option only for patients with type I diabetes. It s an option for some people who have type II diabetes, and the results are excellent. To learn more about David and watch his video, visit uwhealth.org/transplant

10 Erin Because she was a TV news anchor in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Erin Davisson LeMere s battle with liver disease was very public. Viewers watched as she grew more ill. In August 1990, she was put on the wait list for a liver transplant at UW Health in Madison. She and the station managers made the decision to share every step of her journey with her television audience, in hopes that they could promote awareness of organ donation and transplant. She received the gift of life in November 1990, but her public awareness campaign was far from over. Then: Now: Many people died while waiting for a compatible liver donor. Our team is performing a record-breaking number of liver transplants each year. To learn more about Erin and watch her video, visit uwhealth.org/transplant

12 Justin Justin Mandeville has suffered from kidney problems since he was a toddler. He spent much of his time at American Family Children s Hospital, and when he was 6 years old, doctors needed to remove his kidneys to save his life. He spent the next six years on dialysis. His parents set up his room to accommodate all of the medical supplies, and they had to hook him up to a dialysis machine for 10 hours every night. His mother, Jen, says the dialysis was a godsend, but it was still only a temporary solution he needed a kidney transplant. Justin s aunt, Kim Myrold, was ready to be his kidney donor. Justin and his aunt, Kim Then: Now: High doses of steroids caused multiple side effects. We offer prednisone-free immunosuppression to certain kidney and liver patients. 14 Sherry Then: Now: Statewide donation education was managed by a small group of employees. More than 150 trained volunteers work to educate others about donation and transplantation. Twenty-one years ago, Sherry Linzmeier experienced one of the worst days of her life when her son, Dan, was involved in a car crash that left him brain dead. Though she and her husband, Ron, had never talked with their son about organ donation, they both agreed they wanted to give the gift of life to others through Dan s organs. Dan s heart, liver, pancreas and both kidneys saved four people. Sherry now says it was the best decision they ever made. Across the span of more than two decades, that decision has led to more relationships and opportunities than Sherry and Ron could have ever imagined. 16 Then: Patients could wait years to be transplanted. Now: Jenny and her husband, Mike Our lung transplant patients wait an average of just a few months, although some have been transplanted within days of listing. Jenny When she was 7 years old, Jenny Flasher-Yelczyn of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), a progressive, genetic lung disorder that, over time, limits a person s ability to breathe. She did not experience any breathing problems while growing up, but after graduating from college in 1990, her health went downhill and she asked her doctor about the possibility of a lung transplant. At the time, such a procedure was a very new idea for CF patients; many doctors felt it was simply trading one disease for another. But, in 1994, Jenny was able to go on the wait list at UW Health for a new set of lungs. To learn more about Jenny, visit uwhealth.org/transplant

18 From left: Helen, Gary, Amy, Eli, Chip, Ezra Amy After receiving kidneys from both of her parents, Gary and Helen Kastein, Amy Beaman vowed she would protect her body from any more trauma. She and her husband, Chip, wanted to expand their family, so they researched adoption options and decided Guatemala was where they would find their future child. In October 2005, they learned they had been matched with a child and began making plans to bring him home. But just before they were about to go out to celebrate, Amy s doctor called and informed her that she was pregnant. Suddenly, their family s carefully laid-out plans changed. Then: Now: A handful of physicians and staff began to build the UW Health Transplant Program. More than 300 people contribute to our program, the fourth largest in the nation. 20 Meiyee Then: Now: From left: Shaonan, Meiyee, Meiqi, Yimeng A liver transplant was only possible with the gift of life from a deceased donor. Nearly 10 percent of our liver transplants are from living donors. During the summer of 2015, Yimeng Chen and Shaonan Lu believed they had limited time left with their baby daughter, Meiyee. After taking her to American Family Children s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, they learned she had biliary atresia, which meant the bile ducts from her liver were not formed. Bile could not drain from her liver, which caused the liver to become irreversibly damaged. Meiyee needed a liver transplant, but her surgeon was concerned that a liver from a deceased donor would not help her in time. She needed a living liver transplant as soon as possible and her father ended up as the perfect match.. To learn more about Meiyee, visit uwhealth.org/transplant

22 Chad Chad Larson s health challenges began when he became an amputee at age 16. Then he received a kidney transplant, with his brother, Rick, as his living donor. He had a second transplant in 2013 a combined pancreas-kidney transplant to end his ongoing battle with diabetes. While he is unable to work full-time, Chad has discovered another way in which he can give back and express his gratitude for the gift of life working tirelessly on behalf of his beloved hometown. Then: Now: When pancreas transplant began, it had a very low success rate. The improvements our team created are saving patients around the world. 24 Al Al Wright s wife, Charlene, was a beloved figure in her hometown of Barneveld, Wisconsin. Across three decades, she cared for more than 50 children in her home daycare, and was known by many as Grandma Charlene. When she died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism in 2007, Al was devastated. The only silver lining for him was that she was able to donate both kidneys, her liver, her corneas and her tissue to people who desperately needed them. For Al, Charlene s death was not an ending, but rather a beginning he had an idea for an event that would continue to honor her generous gift of life. Then: Now: Fewer donations occurred because donation decisions were not easily accessed. Online donor registries make it quick and easy to register your donation decision. 26 Then: Now: Ventricular assist devices were large and cumbersome. Dick and his son, Alex They are very small, allowing patients a much higher quality of life. Dick By the time Dick Kreibich reached his 50s, heart disease became a sad reality for him. The Milton, Wisconsin man suffered from cardiomyopathy arrhythmia, and while doctors tried giving him medications and an implantable cardiac defibrillator, nothing helped. He needed a heart transplant. He and his wife, Leslie, considered another facility, but ultimately chose University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, because the staff there was more personable and attentive to his needs. He was placed on the wait list, but as he, Leslie and their then 3-year-old son, Alex, waited, they wondered if he would receive his gift of life in time. 28 Bill Bill McKenzie and Julie Underwood have been the best of friends for more than three decades. They first met before either of them lived in Wisconsin, and then they moved to the Madison area within a year of each other. In 2008, Bill learned he suffered from end- stage kidney failure, and by 2010, he needed a new kidney. Julie didn t hesitate, and said she would be happy to donate one of her kidneys to her friend. Unfortunately, she was not a good match for him. The two would need to explore other options so that Julie could still provide Bill with the gift of life. Then: Now: Living donor transplants were rare, and usually only between family members. With many living donation options, donors don t have to be related or even know their recipient. To learn more about Bill and Julie, and watch their video, visit uwhealth.org/transplant

30 Phylis Phylis Taft desperately needed a kidney transplant. But it was the late 1980s, and imuran the primary antirejection drug available to transplant recipients had unpleasant and even dangerous lifelong side effects. Hans Sollinger, MD, PhD, transplant surgeon at UW Health, was testing a new immunosuppressant that could work better than imuran, but he needed patients to participate in the first trial. Phylis agreed to try the new medication. I thought, Why not?, says Phylis, who lives in Boscobel, Wisconsin. If I was able to help someone else, that would be good. Then: Now: Patients suffered horrible side effects from anti-rejection medications. Our researchers are close to completely eliminating the need for immunosuppression.
