2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN AND FOUNDER What a year it has been! Like any start-up, our first year of operations has been a busy one at The Organ Project and I am proud to say that we are off to an incredible start. The mission of The Organ Project is to end the organ transplant waiting list. Not only will that save lives, it will improve the quality of life for thousands of people, increase our national productivity and save a lot of money. Someone in Canada dies about every 30 hours waiting for an organ transplant. I know all too well the agony associated with waiting and I want to end the wait. Over the past few months, The Organ Project has been hard at work leveraging every opportunity to talk about the importance of organ donation and the need to register. We are developing new programs and building partnerships with other organizations that will help us extend our reach and maximize our impact. This has also been an incredible time for me personally. This past year alone, I watched with great pride as my eldest daughter graduated high school and started university. I had the opportunity to enjoy some time with my youngest daughter in Sweden. I watched the Senators go on a spectacular run for the Stanley Cup and I have been blessed to hear so many personal stories of both success and heartbreak with organ donation. I am grateful to have DID YOU KNOW? Right now, more than 4,600 Canadians are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. More than 250 of them will die waiting. In 2015, there were 1,996 transplants performed in Canada, less than 50% of the transplants needed. In fact, about every 30 hours, someone in Canada dies waiting for an organ transplant. Registering to pass on your organs when you die is an important and easy way to help end the wait. It takes less than 2 minutes and costs nothing. All you need is a health card. While more than 80% of Canadians support organ donation, only 20% have registered. Registering as an organ donor does not change the care you receive. Health care professionals work diligently to save all lives and registration status is accessed only by organ procurement groups when there is no hope of survival. Even if you register, it is unlikely that you will become a donor only 2% of deaths in Canada in 2015 fulfilled the requirements for potential organ donors. We aim to end the wait by: Our Team We are a small but energetic group fully committed to achieving our mission. Under the direct leadership of Eugene Melnyk, our staff and team of volunteers are led by Catherine Shaw in operations and Heather Faralla in fundraising. We work hard to limit our administrative costs by leveraging the support of contract organizations who work with us at often heavily discounted rates. We are also extremely grateful to the staff at the Ottawa Senators and the Ottawa Senators Foundation who work with us every day to help us achieve our mission Highlights NHL STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS 2017 was a great year for the Ottawa Senators and The Organ Project was very fortunate to be given a significant presence at all of the Ottawa Senators home playoff games at the Canadian Tire Centre. With volunteers outside, promotional materials inside and commercials playing in the pre-game and in-game show, we were able to share our message repeatedly with over 173,000 fans. In 2017, The Organ Project joined forces with Ashley s Angels to support the University of Toronto Transplant Institute s High School Outreach Initiative (HSOI). Developed by the leading multi-organ transplant centres in Toronto, the program combines a transplant practitioner and a transplant recipient in than 1,300 times in markets across Canada, including 2 NHL national broadcasts, raising awareness with MILLIONS of Canadians. CONFERENCE 2018 The Organ Project is delighted to be named Charity of Choice by the HRPA for their 2018 conference in Toronto: January 31 st Feb 1 st, The conference will give a unique the opportunity to help more than 4,500 HR professionals educate and motivate their workforces to help us end the wait. 4 5
