3 2 first and only public medical school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was established in 1962 as a way to meet a perceived shortage of physicians and as a means of providing an affordable medical education for its residents. Ground was broken for the school building in 1969 and the first class of sixteen medical students began attending classes in a building that formerly housed the H. E. Shaw Company. The clinical and basic sciences building opened in 1973 and in 1974 the first class of sixteen Medical Doctors graduated. The medical school s affiliated hospital, University Hospital, opened in 1976 and in 1977 the combined entity was dedicated as the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. As the Commonwealth s first Level 1 Trauma Center, University Hospital also launched the region s first air ambulance service, New England Life Flight, in In 1979 the school established a PhD program which developed into the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in The Graduate School of Nursing also opened in 1986 and in 1994 initiated a PhD program. In 1997, the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research, internationally recognized for its contributions to biology and medicine and for the discovery and development of the birth control pill, merged with the medical school. Also in 1997, control of Massachusetts Biologic Laboratories, the only non-profit, public, FDA-licensed manufacturer of vaccines and other biologic products in the United States, was transferred to the medical school. The following year, the clinical system of the University of Massachusetts Medical School merged with Memorial Health Care and formed UMass Memorial Health Care, the largest health care provider in Central and Western Massachusetts. UMass Memorial Foundation, the philanthropic entity of the institution, was also established in In 1999 Commonwealth Medicine was established to bring independent research initiatives, training programs, and clinical services for the public sector together into one health care consulting division. The Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center for research, education, and service for people with developmental disabilities and their families, became part of UMass Medical School in 2001 and was designated one of its Centers of Excellence.
