3 Dedication to Our Values During the academic year, fraternities and sororities participate in various activities such as community service, brotherhood/sisterhood events, leadership development retreats, and much more. It is their dedication to our values of leadership, service, scholarship, and community that has led to their student success. Join me in congratulating our student leaders for their outstanding accomplishments during the Spring 2017 semester! This academic year we have introduced new initiatives, strengthened old ones, and have enjoyed several successes throughout the semester. It is our hope that this semester report will help you experience the impact of our programs. Our office provides intentional programming to develop students to be the leaders of tomorrow. We have been diligent in providing academic resources, hosted celebratory events for achievements and reconnecting our alums. In addition, we continue to respond to the concerns presented in the Fraternity and Sorority Coalition report by acknowledging the eight (8) themes: All Greek Council/Sub-Governing Council Leadership & Development Underground Activity Expansion Faculty/Staff Advisement Hazing Prevention Recognition Academic Achievement External/Internal Partnerships Fraternity & Sorority Life Staffing Furthermore, UAlbany currently has 39 values-based chapters across six (6) sub-governing councils who work closely with the All Greek Council. The All Greek Council is comprised of 3-5 students who work collaboratively with their peers and university administration to Advance our Greek Community (AGC). This report is designed to celebrate the core values of our community, recognize our hard working student leaders, and share their organization story (ies). Sincerely, Arleny Alvarez-Peña, Assistant Director Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life 3

9 Advancement only comes with habitually doing more than you are asked. ~ Gary R. Blair Advancing our Greek Community In order to provide a developmental opportunity to both existing and newly elected directors, Fraternity and Sorority Life created a comprehensive intentional eight-week program that would educate, involve and empower collaborative work through our student council. Students had the opportunity to engage with their peers and university administration and work closely with the leaders of the sub-governing council as they work together to Advance our Greek Community (AGC). The planning for the All Greek Council Junior Board seminars began as a result of the Fraternity and Sorority Coalition Project Report, which was administered in the fall of The eight (8) weeks included but was not limited to: Educational and developmental workshops developed and presented by existing board. Bi-weekly meetings and one-on-one with the Assistant Director Monthly meetings with Neighborhood Life and much more. 9 AGC Directors
10 Thank you to Nicholas Mayes 15 (Theta Delta Chi Fraternity) & Laura Lozier 15 (Alpha Xi Delta Women s Fraternity), All Greek Council alums for supporting this campaign and donating next years posters. For decades, society has increasingly perpetrated negative images of fraternity and sorority members. As a result, the Division of Student Affairs along with Fraternity and Sorority Life and the All Greek Council have developed a photo campaign to acknowledge the diversity of experiences and membership across its member. Elizabeth Doyle, Vice-President, Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. 75% of UAlbany fraternity and sorority members are active members in student clubs, intramurals, Student Association, Residential Life, university admissions, and much more. This is an increase of 7% compared to last year. Langie Cadesca, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and President, National Pan-Hellenic Council 12 outstanding organization members across sub-governing councils were selected to participate in our Letters Today Leaders Tomorrow photo campaign. Each participant was asked a set of questions to allow them to reflect on their experience and participation as a member. Service to the community Alumni engagement Valuable lessons learned Close friendships Tony Wu, Nu Alpha Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Vice President, National Asian Panhellenic Council Participants selected stated that being a member of fraternity and sorority life has given them access to the following items Professional development Character building Time management Fulfillment Support (good & bad times) Humbling experiences Group management 10
11 Academic Success Congratulations to our graduating fraternity and sorority members of the Class of 2017! Letters to my younger Greek self Take Advantage Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Enjoy your undergraduate years because they will fly by and above all remember to give back to the community that gave you so much. Just Breathe Being a part of fraternity and sorority life does not end during graduation. It is a life commitment to uphold the values of scholarship, service, brotherhood/sisterhood, and leadership within their communities. We asked graduating fraternity and sorority members to write down any advice they would give to their younger Greek self. This may relate to life lessons, relationships, etc. Just breathe. Literally, just stop moving and breathe. Things will feel unbearable and overwhelming but being able to handle this pressure is what separates you from the rest. Confidence is key. Get Involved Get involved and stay involved. There is nothing that will benefit more than knowing not only the Greek community, but also other university members. Stay True to Self Stay focused. Remain humble, and remember the reasons you joined your organization. Stay true to self, and you do not have to prove yourself to anyone. Say Yes 11 Do not be afraid to exceed everyone s expectations. Being Greek offers us a unique position on campus and in life. It brings the leadership in each and every/one of us and pushes us to strive for more. Something I learned from being part of the Greek community is to say YES. Say yes to the networking opportunity, to the luncheon, to the collaboration and to the volunteer opportunities. More importantly say yes to yourself, let yourself try and reach your dreams

Each semester s results are used to designate a chapter as one of the following: Exceptional, Good, Fair and Poor. EXCEPTIONAL: The chapter has exceeded the minimum expectations required of each social or cultural fraternity, sorority, and social fellowship and earned a score of 90% or better. GOOD: The chapter has satisfactorily achieved or maintained all standards required of each social or cultural fraternity, sorority, and social fellowship and earned a score of 70% or better. FAIR: The chapter has failed to meet the minimum standards required of each social or cultural fraternity, sorority, and social fellowship; however, the deficiency can be corrected the following semester. Chapters that are designated with this standing earned a score between 50% and 69%. The chapter will outline the expectations they must meet in order to fulfill the deficiency (ies) that resulted in the Fair standing in a detailed Action Plan. Those chapters designated as Chapters in Fair Standing for an entire year will be referred to their Sub-Governing Council for sanctioning and given 2 Greek violation points. POOR: The chapter has failed to meet the minimum standards required of each social or cultural fraternity, sorority, and social fellowship. Chapters that are designated with this standing earned a score between 25% and 49%. The Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life will outline the expectations a chapter must meet in order to fulfill the deficiency (ies) that resulted in the Poor standing in a detailed Action Plan. A Chapter in Poor Standing will be referred to the All Greek Council for sanctions.
