2 1. Backgrund f the Prject Ethipia is ne f the mst bidiverse cuntries in the wrld. The mntane clud frests f the Kafa Bisphere Reserve (BR) in suthwest Ethipia are cnsidered t be the rigin and centre f Cffea arabica's genetic diversity. They are als hme t many rare species. Tgether with the area's numerus wetlands, they frm a carbn reservir f suprareginal imprtance. Hwever, studies have shwn that their habitats are threatened by verexplitatin and climate change. The NABU prject Bidiversity under Climate Change: Cmmunity Based Cnservatin, Management and Develpment Cncepts fr the Wild Cffee Frests aims t cnserve and restre the Afrmntane clud frests and wetlands in rder t preserve the ecsystem's resilience and unique bidiversity. It als intends t avid carbn dixide emissins and secure ecsystem services fr the lcal ppulatin. In cllabratin with the lcal ppulatin, ecsystems will be explred and restred, secured and transferred t sustainable, participatry cmmunity management. In rder t simultaneusly create awareness fr the effects f glbal warming n bidiversity and in rder t prmte reginal develpment, targeted develpment prgrammes fr crafts, ecturism and reginal prducts as well as educatinal prgrams fr children and yuths and energyefficient stves will be intrduced. The prject supprts the implementatin f Ethipia's Climate-Resilient Green Ecnmy Strategy, ties climate and bidiversity cnservatin t reginal develpment and helps the lcal ppulatin t independently ensure the lng-term cnservatin f nature and natural resurces as basis f their livelihd. 2. Backgrund f the Assignment Climate change is increasingly psing challenges t African agriculture. In fact, agriculture and climate change are inextricably linked: crp yield, bidiversity, and water use, as well as sil health are directly affected by a changing climate and pse a threat t many African crps, especially grains such as maize, srghum and millet. The rising f surface temperature, changing precipitatin patterns and mre frequent drughts caused by climate change is having negative effects n agricultural yields. It becmes apparent that rising temperatures increase evaptranspiratin and cnsequently decrease grundwater re-charge, while the increase in heavy precipitatin clearly increases bth surface run-ff and grundwater recharge. In cmbinatin with defrestatin, but als with the degradatin f pastures and farmland, which likewise increases surface discharge, this will increasingly cntribute t sil ersin. Climate-resilient crps are cnsidered as an pprtunity t tackle deceasing yields and thus fd insecurity due t climate change. Kafa Bisphere Reserve in Suth-western Ethipia is rich in frests, grasslands and wetlands. Its ecsystems ffer a great variety f nn-timer prducts including edible fruits, mushrms, plants etc. Over time, peple have indirectly shaped many plants. Sme have been dmesticated in hme gardens and in the fields tgether with cultivated fd and cash crps. Sme f thse frmerly wild cllected and/ r cultivated plants and fruits r berries add crucial vitamins t the nrmally vitamin deficient Ethipian cereal diet, particularly fr children. But, accrding t FAO mre than 90 percent f crp varieties have disappeared frm farmers fields wrldwide; half f the breeds f many dmestic animals have been lst. Lss f frest cver, wetlands, ther wild uncultivated areas, and the destructin f the aquatic envirnment exacerbate the genetic ersin f agr-bidiversity. The peple in the Kafa regin mainly live f subsistence farming, the sale f wild cffee and the natural resurces f their envirnment (frest, including fd, burning/ building materials, medicinal plants/ spices, animal feed, hney, wild cffee). Over the centuries

3 they have adapted their (land) use, traditins and custms t nature. Nevertheless, steady ppulatin grwth, pverty, illegal immigratin and agr-investment (e.g. tea, cffee) have led t an increasing pressure n the regin's natural resurces. At the same time, the effects f climate change are nticeable in Kafa in frm f irregular rainfalls, extreme weather events such as heavy rains r drughts, as well as the prliferatin f pests. Especially Wild Cffea arabica is prven t be sensitive. Hwever, the ptentials f alternative incme-/ fd-/ energy surces are generally unexplited and ld, adapted crps are unused and slide int blivin. But especially adapted crps can cntribute significantly t fd security and an increased agricultural bidiversity ( agrbidiversity ). NABU has assigned a subcntractr t cnduct a study analysing the lcal flra and agriculture fr climate resilient crps. This assignment is planned t use the results f the analysis and test the identified mst suitable crps fr prductin. Therefre, the aim f the assignment is t pilt climate resilient and/r adaptive agricultural crp cultivatin and t prmte the cultivatin with the lcal ppulatin. The reintrductin will increase the fd security, value bidiversity and will make lcal cmmunities less vulnerable t the effects f climate change. NABU is fr that reasn seeking an experienced and prfessinal subcntractr fr the (re)intrductin f climate adaptive crps in the Kafa BR. 3. Objective f the Assignment The verall bjective is t increase agr-bidiversity and at the same time the fd security at the Kafa Bisphere Reserve, SNNPR, Ethipia. The specific bjectives f the assignment are: Testing f identified climate-resilient crps with farmers fr easy applicatin, successful cultivatin and acceptance by farmers and cnsumers, Intrductin f the mst apprpriate crps t the lcal cmmunities, Dcumentatin f the crps cultivatin fr knwledge disseminatin, Prmtin f these crps as best-practice fr wider use. 4. Tasks Develpment f a wrk plan and time schedule and submissin t NABU fr apprval. Set up f an expert team as fllws: 1 team leader (at least 14 mnths), 3 lcal agricultural experts (each fr at least 14 mnths). Preparatin, pilting and review (survival, requirements, reasns fr failure etc.) f pilt plantatin series f the identified climate resilient crps tgether with farmers at field and hme garden cnditins, fr at least ne grwing seasn, fr at least 5 climate-resilient crps. Train-the-trainer-campaign: Prfessinal training f farmers in agricultural practice fr prductin, cultivatin, maintenance f seeds, fields etc. as well as in disseminatin f their knwledge fr prmtin, exchange and multiplicatin (20 training sessins fr 40 farmers each).

4 Supervisin and supprt t pilt farmers n the sites. Cnductin f farmers field days fr exchange fr 80 farmers fr three days. Establishment and securing f management f a nursery site fr display, exchange and sale t farmers (40 ha). Develpment and implementatin f a cmmunicatin campaign (10 wrkshps) in cperatin with the lcal gvernment in rder t prperly cmmunicate the results f the test planting series and successfully identified climate-resilient crps and prmte the prgramme. Develpment, printing (2,500 cpies minimum) and disseminatin f an easy t understand, richly illustrated 10-page farmers manual (in Amharic/ Kafinn) fr applicatin f climate-resilient crp types fr end-users/ farmers, Design and printing f a farmers prmtin pster (1,500 cpies) and stickers (3,000 cpies). 5. The Cntractr has t reprt t NABU s Prject Office in Bnga and NABU Headquarters mnthly and at the end f the cntract in accrdance with 5. Deliverables and Timing. All deliverables and written reprts need t be submitted n time, in accrdance with the Eurpean calendar and in English language. All stipulated tasks are t be executed in clse cnsultatin with NABU. Regular meetings n a mnthly basis will take place between the Cntractr and NABU t discuss, plan and evaluate the individual activities and prgress. Prductin f publicity material such as manual, pster and stickers have t be develped in clse cnsultatin with NABU and need t display NABU s lg as well as the funding ministry s lg. The assignment will be cnducted by the Cntractr wh will set up a team as required and name the team members. The team members need t be apprved by NABU prir t entering int cntractual agreements with these individuals. Fr this purpse CV s f persnnel t be invlved in the task shuld be sent t NABU HQ fr clearance. It is the Cntractr s respnsibility t rganise and arrange travels and/r field visits, including the cntracting f additinal experts. Befre travelling t the field (i) the cmmunities t be apprached fr the data cllectin have t be agreed n; (ii) cntact

5 persns at the respective sites have t be infrmed and be ready t receive the team; (iii) the necessary lgistic arrangement fr the field wrk have been made. The Cntractr will handle and lead the team and any cperatin with ther subcntractrs r suppliers f material n their wn respnsibility.
