13 Faith Focs This week s family connection activity is based on the Gospel reading for Snday Janary 28th. Peace, Mrs. Hoag Gospel Reading Mark 1:21-28 Jess heals a man with an nclean spirit and his fame spreads throghot Galilee. Family Connection *From Loyola Press The people who heard Jess teach and saw him heal in today s Gospel were said to have been astonished and amazed by the athority of his teaching. So compelling were Jess words and actions that the news abot him cold not be contained; it spread qickly throghot all of Galilee. Two thosand years later, the news abot Jess contines to spread. We are called to participate in sharing the Good News of Jess with others in or words and in or deeds. Gather as a family and try to name some amazing things, events, or people. In today s Gospel we hear that the people were astonished and amazed by their experience of Jess. Read today s Gospel, Mark 1: What did the people who saw and heard Jess find so amazing? (In Jess, the people heard and saw the power and athority of God at work.) People shold see in or lives the power and athority of God at work. Can yo name any modern examples of people in whom yo have seen the power and athority of God at work? Conclde in prayer together that we will experience wonder at the work of God in or world today. Pray together the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of yor faithfl. And kindle in them the fire of yor love. Send forth yor Spirit and they shall be created. And yo will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit yo have taght the hearts of yor faithfl. In the same Spirit help s to relish what is right and always rejoice in yor consolation. We ask this throgh Christ or Lord. Amen.

14 Fl Symptom Checklist for Families Yes Yes Yes Yes No No No No Does yor child have a sore throat, bad cogh, or rnny nose? Does yor child have body aches or chills? Does yor child have vomiting or diarrhea? Does yor child have a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more? How to check yor child s temperatre sing an oral thermometer: Wash the thermometer with soap and warm water before sing. Do not let yor child drink anything for 15 mintes, then take his/her temperatre. Pt the thermometer nder yor child s tonge. Have yor child close his/her lips arond the thermometer and stay with yor child while the thermometer is in yor child s moth. Yo can hold it in place. It takes abot one minte to check a temperatre by moth. A digital thermometer beeps when it is ready to read. Yor child s temperatre will show on the thermometer like this: ºF The temperatre is abot 100 degrees (one hndred point two degrees). 102 ºF The temperatre is 100 degrees pls 2 degrees (one hndred and two degrees). If yo are nable to take yor child s temperatre, yo can look for these signs of fever: Yor child s face may be red. His/her skin may be hot to yor toch or moist. Yor child may be fssy and have a headache. If yor child has a fever AND yo answered yes to one of the qestions above, yor child might have the fl. Children with the fl shold be isolated from other people in the home. They shold also stay home ntil they are symptom-free for 24 hors. That means ntil they have no fever withot the se of fever-control medicines and they feel well for 24 hors. When shold my child see a doctor? If yo have a healthy child who now has a mild illness, he/she sally will not need to be seen by a doctor. CALL yor health care provider if yo think yor child is very ill. Be alert for signs that yor child is having troble breathing or that he/she is not drinking enogh flid. If yor child is not drinking enogh, he/she may have a dry moth and tonge; dark circles or snken eyes; no tears and/or less rine otpt (this means fewer than two wet diapers or rinations per day) Smmer 2012

15 Children with these conditions and children who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy can have severe illness from the fl. How does the fl spread? Most experts believe that fl virses spread mainly by droplets made when people with the fl cogh, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the moths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get the fl by toching something that has fl virs on it and then toching their own moth, eyes or nose. The Fl: A Gide For Parents FLU INFORMATION What is the fl? Inflenza (the fl) is an infection of the nose, throat, and lngs cased by inflenza virses. There are many different inflenza virses that are constantly changing. Fl virses case illness, hospital stays and deaths in the United States each year. The fl can be very dangeros for children. Each year abot 20,000 children yonger than 5 years old are hospitalized from fl complications, like pnemonia. How serios is the fl? Fl illness can vary from mild to severe. While the fl can be serios even in people who are otherwise healthy, it can be especially dangeros for yong children and children of any age who have certain long-term health conditions, inclding asthma (even mild or controlled), nerological and nerodevelopmental conditions, chronic lng disease, heart disease, blood disorders, endocrine disorders (sch as diabetes), kidney, liver, and metabolic disorders, and weakened immne systems de to disease or medication. What are the symptoms of the fl? Symptoms of the fl can inclde fever, cogh, sore throat, rnny or stffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatige and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adlts). Some people with the fl will not have a fever. How long can a sick person spread the fl to others? People with the fl may be able to infect others by shedding virs from 1 day before getting sick to 5 to 7 days after. However, children and people with weakened immne systems can shed virs for longer, and may be still contagios past 5 to 7 days of fl illness, especially if they still have symptoms. PROTECT YOUR CHILD How can I protect my child against the fl? To protect against the fl, the first and most important thing yo can do is to get a fl vaccine for yorself and yor child. Vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. It s especially important that yong children and children with long term health conditions get vaccinated. (See list of conditions in How serios is the fl? ) Caregivers of children with health conditions or of children yonger than 6 months old shold get vaccinated. (Babies yonger than 6 months are too yong to be vaccinated themselves.) Another way to protect babies is to vaccinate pregnant women. Research shows that fl vaccination gives some protection to the baby both while the woman is pregnant and for p to 6 months after the baby is born. Fl vaccine is pdated annally to protect against the fl virses that research indicates are most likely to case illness dring the pcoming fl season. Fl vaccines are made sing strict safety and prodction measres. Over the years, millions of fl vaccines have been given in the United States with a very good safety record.

16 Is there a medicine to treat the fl? Antiviral drgs are prescription medicines that can be sed to treat and prevent inflenza illness. They can make people feel better and get better sooner. Antivirals can mean the difference between having milder illness instead of very serios illness that cold reslt in a hospital stay. Antiviral drgs are different from antibiotics, which fight against bacterial infections. They work best when started dring the first 2 days of illness. It s very important that antiviral drgs are sed early to treat the fl in people who are very sick (for example, people who are in the hospital) or who are at high risk of having serios fl complications. Other people with fl illness may also benefit from taking antiviral drgs. These drgs can be given to children and pregnant women. What are some of the other ways I can protect my child against the fl? In addition to getting vaccinated, yo and yor children can take everyday steps to help prevent the spread of germs. These inclde: Stay away from people who are sick. If yor child is sick with fl-like illness, try to keep him or her in a separate room from others in the hosehold, if possible. CDC recommends that yor sick child stay home for at least 24 hors after his or her fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever shold be gone withot the se of a feverredcing medicine. Cover yor moth and nose with a tisse when yo cogh or sneeze. Throw the tisse in the trash after it has been sed. Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, se an alcohol-based hand rb. Avoid toching yor eyes, nose and moth. Germs spread this way. Clean and disinfect hard srfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs, inclding bathroom srfaces, kitchen conters and toys for children. Clean by wiping them down with a hosehold disinfectant according to directions on the prodct label. These everyday steps are a good way to redce yor chances of getting sick. However, a yearly fl vaccine is the best protection against fl illness. IF YOUR CHILD IS SICK What can I do if my child gets sick? Talk to yor doctor early if yo are worried abot yor child s illness. Make sre yor child gets plenty of rest and drinks enogh flids. If yor child is 5 years and older and does not have other health problems and gets fl-like symptoms, inclding a fever and/or cogh, conslt yor doctor as needed. Children yonger than 5 years of age especially those yonger than 2 years old and children with certain chronic conditions, inclding asthma, diabetes and disorders of the brain or nervos system, at high risk of serios fl-related complications. If yor child is at high risk for fl complications, call yor doctor or take them to the doctor right away if they develop fl-like symptoms. What if my child seems very sick? Even previosly healthy children can get very sick from the fl. Make sre yor child gets plenty of rest and drinks enogh flids. If yor child is 5 years or older and does not have other health problems and gets fl-like symptoms, inclding a fever and/or cogh, conslt yor doctor as needed: Fast breathing or troble breathing Blish or gray skin color Not drinking enogh flids (not going to the bathroom or not making as mch rine as they normally do) Severe or persistent vomiting Not waking p or not interacting Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held Fl-like symptoms improve bt then retrn with fever and worse cogh Has other conditions (like heart or lng disease, diabetes,or asthma) and develops fl symptoms, inclding a fever and/or cogh. Can my child go to school, day care or camp if he or she is sick? No. Yor child shold stay home to rest and to avoid giving the fl to other children or caregivers. When can my child go back to school after having the fl? Keep yor child home from school, day care or camp for at least 24 hors after their fever is gone. (The fever shold be gone withot the se of a fever-redcing medicine.) A fever is defined as 100 F (37.8 C) or higher. For more information, visit or or call 800-CDC-INFO AUGUST 2015 CS A
