2 Letter from the President Dear NAND Members, We are more than half way throgh the year and NAND still has mch more planned! Bt first, let s recap all the great things NAND has been p to since or last December newsletter: NAND hosted its winter Fndraising event at DeSanno Pizzeria on December 10 th. For everyone who stated they were there for NAND, we received 10% of those sales. NAND hosted its second jornal clb event on Janary 13 th at the Vanderbilt Recreational Center. Marilyn Holmes, the TAND recipient for the Adlt Weight Management certification, presented on this topic. 2CEU s were offered. NAND hosted its second networking event with a free fitness class at FitLab on Janary 21 st. NAND covered the cost for the first 15 NAND members to RSVP. After brning a few calories, everyone met for a meet n greet session next door at Calypso Café. NAND hosted its second member meeting at Maggiano s Italian Restarant on Febrary 9 th. Dr. Shireen Pais presented Understanding the Data on Exocrine Pancreatic Insffiency. The meeting was sponsored by Abbvie. Also at this meeting we honored or dietetic internship classes from Lipscomb University, Vanderbilt Medical Center, UT Martin, and NHC. Pictres of or award recipients were posted to or Facebook page shortly after this event. NAND co-hosted an event on Febrary 25 th with MTSPEN at Amergio s Italian Restarant. Martina Cartwright, PhD, RD, presented on What s New for the ICU?: Ntrition Gidelines. Abbott Ntrition sponsored the event. So as yo can see, NAND has had a VERY bsy year and even thogh the end of the year is approaching, NAND still has plenty in the works that yo won t want to miss ot! We have varios activities planned for National Ntrition Month in March, a fndraising event, and a farm tor! Please refer to the annoncements for NNM events that we crrently have confirmed in this newsletter. More information to be released as it develops for or fndraising and farm tor events. Be sre to check or social media pages and yor s for more information as these events develop.

3 Please be on the lookot for or membership srvey to come ot in March! We have listened to yor feedback by providing a greater variety of networking and CEU opportnities and want to contine to grown as an organization to better reach or members and commnity. In order to do this thogh we need yor feedback so please be sre to complete the srvey when it is sent ot! As a bons, we will draw two random winners to each receive a $25 gift card for completing the srvey. NAND contines to receive many reqests from those in the commnity looking for a dietetic professional to speak at commnity events, provide private conseling, referrals, etc. We contine to encorage all or wonderfl members to please take a moment to fill ot yor professional information in the Find a RD section on the NAND website. We want to be able to make it easier for the commnity to find the Ntrition Expert that sites their needs and direct inqiries accordingly. Last bt certainly not least, I cannot forget to give a well-deserved shot ot to the awesome NAND board! 4 National Ntrition Month March is National Ntrition Month and there is a lot to celebrate! Most importantly Savoring the Flavor of Eating Right. NAND has collaborated with two commnity organizations to volnteer time and efforts to not only spread the word on what a Registered Dietitian Ntritionist is, bt also to extend the knowledge of Eating Right. On March 5 th RDNs and dietetic stdents will join The Jnior Leage Nashville Chapter at their Kids in the Kitchen event where children will participate in a healthy cooking demonstration and varios activity stations with NAND inclded. NAND and The Nashville Food Project will be working together to do some healthy gardening on Satrday, March 19 th. RDNs and stdents will flex their green thmb to get the gronds ready for spring planting. The Nashville Food Project grows, cooks, donates and advocates for healthy ntrition for individals in need. Contact Kayla if yo wold like to be involved in this great volnteer opportnity. Don t forget March 9 is Registered Dietitian Ntritionist Day! Be sre to hg yor friends, colleages and teachers to thank them for their hard work in ntrition, agricltre, advocacy and bsiness. Creating posts on social media and advocate on this day to inform the ninformed on what an RDN is and where they can find a ntrition specialist is a great way to get the word ot. 5 Advocacy News Collette Powers and Polina Vorobeychik met with the Mayor s Office Edcation Liaison, Lara Moore. The focs of the meeting was to find ways NAND can get more involved in health and wellness initiatives with the city of Nashville. There are many programs and organizations that are looking to partner with NAND. With the Mayor s Office help we were able to connect with the Metro Nashville Pblic Schools (MNPS) and the PENCIL Fondation. Crrently we are working on establishing relationships with MNPS and PENCIL and find ways we can get NAND involved in pblic schools wellness initiatives. Please stay tned for more information to come. 6 Volnteer Opportnity Fn ways to volnteer as a RD or RD2Be Do yo have a brand or prodct that yo jst love? Are yo looking to volnteer in a creative way? If so, why not become an ambassador! An ambassador is a person who represents a prodct or brand and promotes the prodct or brand throgh presence in the commnity or on social media. How do yo become an ambassador? Jst contact the brand or prodct and ask if they offer ambassador roles or offer to volnteer with them! Crrently, Siggi s Icelandic-style Skyr Yogrt is accepting RD and RD2Be Ambassadors. As an ambassador, yo will be provided with a media packet containing client edcational literatre, recipes and copons for clients. All RD s and RD2Be s can apply on Siggi s website. I first learned abot Siggi s and had the chance to meet him when I participated in yoga at FNCE Siggi s yogrt is a wonderfl brand. It is the yogrt that many of s remember from or childhood before all the long named preservatives and loads of sgar got involved in the process! Siggi s takes yogrt back to the basics. 7 Stdent Corner: As I wait to learn the fate of my ftre on April third (Dietetic Internship Match Day), I find myself reflecting on the mentor experiences I have been lcky enogh to receive over the last few years. Behind each skill, event, tor, and honor listed on my application, was a dietitian who provided me an invalable opportnity or insight. While the dietetics field inherently calls for standing on the sholders of those who have come before for the the ltimate betterment of the individals we serve, it is impossible not to be gratefl for those who reached back and offered their time and expertise in hopes of making my learning crve a little faster and my nderstanding more complete. To those dietitians who already volnteer or accept offers to interact with stdents, on behalf of this crrent class of stdent members, thank yo! My peers and I are gratefl that yo find meaning in the jorney and want others to experience it. Not only is yor shared knowledge crcial in preparing stdents for the competitive process of attaining a dietetic internship, bt yor insight will ndobtedly carry over into or careers. Many of s wold not be here withot having a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a psh in the right direction. To those who are considering where mentorship fits amid all the professional and personal demands vying for yor attention, please know how mch yor help is needed to gide and inspire. I ask that yo consider the inflence yo possess. Each of yo has a niqe story and set of experiences to share. As crrent and ftre dietitians, we not only have a niqe vantage point to the field of health care, bt we find orselves in a fertile moment in society and cltre in which we can grow or inflence. Offering advice to a stdent over a cp of coffee or teaching a new skill to a dietary aid can be critical in shaping a generation of dietitians who are able to act as change agents in or increasingly impactfl field. Similarly, there are responsibilities on the part of stdents to be worthy of these mentor moments. I encorage stdents to independently prepare and do their research on individals and their specialty prior to meeting. Insightfl qestions that demonstrate higher-level thinking generally provide an opportnity to advance the conversation and advice. Be open to honesty, whether or not it is what yo hoped to hear. Handle the feedback and accept the challenges. Lastly, be gracios and let yor enthsiasm for the field be contagios. Yor attitde might be the inspiration yor mentor needs on a given day. While a thank yo note or small token of appreciation is polite and corteos, time is freqently a scarce commodity of a mentor and it is given to s in trst. The only way we can trly re-pay this investment is for their efforts to be validated throgh or sccess as professionals. Hopeflly we will be in a position to retrn the favor someday, or at the very least, help the next one in line. ~ Amanda Molinar
