7 Wear your pajamas to school Friday, December 8th in support of patients at Connecticut Children s Medical Center!! Students and staff of Sedgwick Middle School are invited to wear their PJ s to school in honor of kids at Connecticut Children s Medical Center. Wear your pjs and make an optional donation of $1 or more. Donations will be collected at school on Friday, December 8 th. Appropriate attire for school/weather. No slippers for safety, please. Friends and families can donate directly to our West Hartford Public School team online using the "Donate Now" button at this link: 20Hartford%20Public%20Schools&fr_search_type=team&fr_find_search=Search&submit=true

8 News from the Nurses Office December School Medications/Seasonal Illnesses: School is a common place to spread the cold and flu viruses!! If a student requires any medications in school-even if they are over the counter for cold or flu symptoms-a medication authorization form must be completed and signed by their doctor and parent/guardian. This form can be located under nursing forms on the Sedgwick website. Friendly reminder: an adult must bring the medication to the Health Room in school! In order to keep you and your child healthy, remember the following tips: Wash hands frequently and avoid touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands. Regularly disinfect items such as doorknobs, remote controls and phones. Avoid close contact with people who are ill. Get the seasonal flu shot - this is advised for almost anyone over the age of 6 months. Contact your medical provider if you have specific questions about getting the vaccine. For more information about the flu vaccine and how to tell if you have a cold or the flu, please go the following web sites: Screenings The State of Connecticut requires 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys to be screened for scoliosis. This screening will be done during their PE rotation. Students with a documented spinal abnormality will be excluded from screening. We are not required to perform vision or hearing screenings. If you have concerns about your child s vision or hearing, please let us know and we will be happy to screen them. REMINDER TO 6TH GRADE PARENTS All current 6th grade students must have a physical exam performed after July 1, 2015 and up to date vaccinations in order to enter 7th grade. The State of CT required vaccinations for 7th grade are: Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap vaccine) Meningitis (Menactra Vaccine) Chicken Pox (Varicella vaccine #2) If you are unsure if your child has already met these requirements, please contact us. 9 Technology and Engineering On Nov. 7th Sedgwick Middle School Technology & Engineering (T&E) teachers were presented with the Program Excellence Award by the Connecticut Technology Engineering Education Association (CTEEA). The Program Excellence Award, also known as Program of the Year is one of the highest honors given to technology and engineering education classroom teachers, and is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession and students. The CTEEA judges were very impressed with the WHPS T&E report, which highlighted the department s mission, goals, curriculum and classroom technology. Judges were also apparently taken by the support that T&E maintains from our District, something that was strongly highlighted in the submitted documentation and response. West Hartford s middle school Program s of the Year will represent Connecticut at the ITEEA Nationals in April. Fingers are crossed that the nation will soon recognize the West Hartford Technology & Engineering Department for all that we do in technology and engineering education. News From the World Language Department 8th Grade Spanish Your students have a future in the advertising world. They were able to write and film their own commercials showing off their ability to use their health/wellness vocabulary and their ability to use commands. We are now moving into Chapter 8 and are starting review our clothing vocabulary. We are also adding in descriptions so they can describe what they are wearing. 8th Grade French Your students have begun Chapter 8. They are learning vocabulary to talk about doing chores: their favorite! We ve talked about the importance of helping out when they are guests. Also with these words, they can understand requests and offer help when they are with a French-speaking host family. We will be continuing our study of the Passé Composé (past tense) to include the remaining two types of verbs.
