Lumpy Skin Disease Workshop Team work and roles 24th - 26th February 2015, Adana, Turkey
Objectives of the workshop 1. To gain a better understanding of the transmission pathways of the disease 2. To share and improve experience regarding epidemiological investigation on LSD in the field 3. To gain real life experience with LSD clinical sings and sampling procedures (if possible, according to the presence of outbreaks) 4. To analyze impact of the disease and control measures 5. To discuss level of awareness and preparedness present in Thrace
Working groups: 1. How to improve national preparedness in the area of LSD awareness and diagnostics 2. Design of a field LSD epidemiological investigation form (for the field day) 3. Identification potential major pathways for LSD introduction and spread to Thrace, Bulgaria and Greece and measures for risk mitigation 4. Support team (Province/HQ veterinarians, Turkey)
1. How to improve national preparedness in the area of LSD awareness and diagnostics Awareness: whom to target and how Diagnostics: methods national & international possible scope of testing Consider EFSA Scientific Opinion on LSD, 2015 Give recommendations as detailed as possible and country specific!
2. Design of a field LSD epidemiological investigation form (for the field day) Based on national epi investigation forms LSD specific Include info from workshop Take into account prior info and data about, area production systems, control measures, etc.(support group) To cover clinical investigations timeline and backwards/forward tracing
3. Identification potential major pathways for LSD introduction and spread to Thrace and measures for risk mitigation Describe in detail and rank potential pathways such as: introduction of infected animals active movement of flying vectors windborne transmission of vectors other Consider short and long distance transmission Consider EFSA Scientific Opinion on LSD, 2015 Give recommendations for risk mitigation as detailed as possible and country specific!
Support team Province/HQ veterinarians (Turkey) identify recent outbreaks of relevance in region (location and time before present) use TURKVET database as needed to answer enquiries on village demographics, animal movements prepare and assist sampling (materials, equipment) Present to the group
Group 1: How to improve early detection and epi-investigations prior work: identify procedure on site, team structure (leader, reporter, photographer, epi and clinical invetigation Familiarise with investigation form/questionnaire and clinical investigations table at site: undertake group and where required individual interviews Collect necessary data and information identify animal groups in village that may be at different risk/history sketch out village entry/exit and boundaries; take relevant photos clinical examination (and collection of samples) find the oldest and freshest signs (may not be among the presented animals!) Complete Clinical investigations table after return: Develop a timeline (possible and mostly likely source and spread) Present a summary to the group & recommend follow-up actions
Group 2: How to implement effective control measures and improve preparedness in Thrace prior work: identify procedure on site, team structure (leader, photographer, reporter) Collate data on animal demographics, vaccination and other control measures in the outbreak village and the surrounding area at site: Review control measures in the outbreak village and the surrounding area Conduct stakeholder interviews (vets, owners, villagers, etc.) after return: summarize the control measures and their effectiveness Present a summary to the group & recommend follow-up actions
Debriefing: Objectives of the workshop 1. To gain a better understanding of the transmission pathways of the disease 2. To gain real life experience with LSD clinical sings and sampling procedures (if possible, according to the presence of outbreaks) 4. To analyze impact of the disease and control measures 5. To discuss level of awareness and preparedness present in Thrace
Conclusions and recommendations control the spread of LSD level of preparedness: epidemiological investigation vaccination Culling biosecurity, vector control, etc. diagnostic equipment LSD awareness and perceptions of stakeholders response of the three countries if the disease is detected in Thrace
