10 LSD: from Middle East to Europe EFSA and EC (DG SANTE) Workshop on strengthening regional cooperation in South East Europe and Middle East for prevention and control of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) on May, Bruxelles, Belgium to update and exchange information on LSD epidemiology; to highlight the country specific needs to increase preparedness for control; to share best practices; to coordinate actions at regional level ensuring coherence and synergies; to encourage cooperation; to optimise use of resources; to share recommendations for the LSD prevention and control, to identify the most suitable instruments and/or funding bodies Participants: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Kosovo*, Lebanon, Montenegro, Serbia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey + EFSA, EC, OIE Reference Laboratory on capripoxviruses, REMESA secretariat World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 10

11 LSD: Middle East occurence 2013 sub regional meeting Larnaca Cyprus LSD was reported in the last decade in Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Israel. the Middle East, especially the East Mediterranean region, is facing a new wave of the spread of the LSD virus beyond its current geographical area where previous outbreaks have been reported and that new vector-borne diseases, such as bluetongue, are now occurring for the first time in Mediterranean Basin. 12 LSD: Middle East occurence 2013 sub regional meeting Larnaca Cyprus Findings of the workshop: 1-That the control of vector-borne diseases in the region has been impeded by the lack/absence of entomological research to deal effectively with the pivotal transmitting factor, 2- The relatively long incubation period of LSD and other vector-borne diseases may delay the symptoms of the diseases during shipping period of exported animals, 3- That proper vaccine against LSD is not yet well performed and that the vaccination process with the Pox Vaccine needs to be clarified. 13 LSD: Middle East occurence 2013 sub regional meeting Larnaca Cyprus Recommendations of the workshop: 1. Middle East countries will enhance information sharing on LSD and vector-borne diseases, 2. A regional network of national epidemiologic teams on LSD and other vector-borne diseases as well as vectors to be developed, 3. Countries under the threat of spread of LSD and other vector-borne diseases in the Middle East, start emergency control plans though they are not currently affected, 4. Rift Valley Fever, Bovine Ephemeral Fever, West Nile Disease, Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, Bluetongue are among important diseases that threat in the region and contingency plans for surveillance and control should be established.
