1 You can make a difference to the life of a student The Deaf Acon sponsorship program assists deaf children, who could otherwise not afford it, to a end schools. Just $40 a month helps to cover costs of educaon, moral and skills training, which equips them to lead producve and frui ul lives. Programs range from kindergarten right through to College level. The schools also work with young adults who have missed out on schooling due to poverty or lack of opportunity. You can help by sponsoring a child. Children can be sponsored in Myanmar, the Philippines, Kenya or Uganda. Contact Deaf Acon today! Change a life for just AUD$40 a month Interested in a Short Term Missions trip? Has God put it on your heart to do something for people less fortunate than yourself? Why not join a team going to the Philippines, suppor!ng & encouraging deaf students and staff at a Chris!an school, suppor!ng local churches, doing some prac!cal work and much more. Interested or need more info? Contact Barry Cutchie: or bcutchie@bigpond.com 8 Issue
2 The Democrac Republic of Congo Papy just got engaged! Papy was one of our Bible School students in Uganda. He has returned to the Congo and now leads the work in Goma. Illness had marred his work for some "me and delayed his proposed engagement. All seems well now and he plans to marry in April. The above photo is not very clear but we do offer congratula"ons and pray God s blessing on their marriage and ministry in this area. Not ALL is well in the Congo Jacob Ndovya, who leads the work, was recently involved in a rather nasty motorbike accident. During his three week stay in hospital, he was in a coma for some days but is now on the road to recovery at his parents house. The pillion passenger was only slightly hurt but, unfortunately the other person involved in the accident died. He was drunk and stepped right out in front of Jacob so there was no way to avoid hi$ng him. You can imagine all the ramifica"ons of this accident! We have had to compensate the family; pay police fees ; hospital and lawyers bills and it is s"ll not over yet. Please pray for Jacob and his young family, and for the deaf leaders who have had to take on much of his responsibili"es. While Jacob lay unconscious on the road someone stole his wallet and mobile phone; he is more upset about the loss of his phone than the loss of the motorbike! Issue
3 Philippines Davao DMI is the home to over 100 deaf young people plus staff. The work has grown over the years and with it, building extensions and improvements have had to be made. We are in the middle of extending the building and are desperately in need of over $20,000 to complete the task. The facade of the building is in place, which blends nicely with the rest of the property but the inside leaves much to be desired. The kitchen, which is used to prepare hundreds of meals each day, is not one that Jamie Oliver would recommend but it is what our people have to make do with. Our desire is to complete the building, which is not only for the convenience of all involved, but is also a government requirement. Pray with us that funds will be found. Sustainability Fund The Philippines is the country where most of our income-genera"ng projects operate; a rubber planta"on, mango planta"on, farm, vegetable and rice fields, mini businesses and coconut palms in full produc"on. Now we would like to plant a falcata planta"on. These trees are used in the produc"on of paper and plywood. It is projected that if we had a 10- hectare planta"on, within 6 years the whole work of DMI in Northern Mindanao could be supported through the sale of the harvest of these quick growing trees. To support ini!a!ves like these you JR with a small falcata tree 10 Issue

5 Zambia Some me ago we met with a lawyer in Zambia, hiring him to take on the cases of three young deaf prisoners in the Kabwe Maximum Security jail in Zambia. We believe that these guys, who were given death sentences, were framed and wrongly imprisoned. We have been frustrated with a lack of progress in addressing these cases. The lawyer is a well known man in Zambia but he did not seem to be doing anything. Finally he responded to s and calls made to him and subsequently visited the prison. He was not able to communicate with the prisoners but, recently he visited with Gunnar, Neville and an interpreter. Hopefully that will get the ball rolling again. Unfortunately his services are not free so we have been presented with a $20,000 bill; and he asked how we were going to pay for it. We are asking the same ques on!! Please pray for this situa on. It has gone on for so long now the three must be beginning to despair and think that we have forgo# en them. It would be great if you could write to these guys and encourage them. Their names are, Emmanuel Banda, Jairy Lupiya and Maimbo Kombe.
