CompleteSpeech R: Initial - Pr Learning Objectives: Understand the principles for making the Pr sound correctly Demonstrate an ability to say the Pr sound correctly at the beginning of simple words Demonstrate an ability to incorporate words that start with the Pr sound into sentences Using This Lesson Effectively: Before starting this lesson, please review the SmartPalate Orientation Guide for in-depth instructions on how to record and import files as well as how to create tongue targets. If you do not have the SmartPalate Orientation Guide you can download it for free at: This lesson is divided into 6 levels that increase in complexity and difficulty. Using this lesson in conjunction with regular instruction from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist is strongly recommended. Use the SmartPalate System on each level to match tongue placement with your customized target until the skills are mastered sufficiently to practice without the SmartPalate. Spend as much or as little time as needed on each level until the skill is mastered sufficiently. Use additional activities or exercises as necessary to practice and solidify each level s concepts. Use the Gold Standard feature to measure your accuracy as you practice each level s material. You can set the measured time to continuous during word, phrase, and sentence practice to measure the accuracy of the sound in continued speech. Record your progress in the tables. Use the recording feature on each level to self-evaluate your consistency in matching your target. Listen to, watch, and imitate the recordings of each level s exercises using the split-screen view. Practice lesson exercises 3-5 times per week (includes home & clinic practice). Practice without the SmartPalate System as soon as skills are mastered. Periodically use the SmartPalate to ensure consistency. Continue using regularly if accuracy is not maintained. For software how-to s and troubleshooting, follow our CompleteSpeech Community link at: 1
Recording Files: The following files are example recordings in this lesson and include both the audio and palate contact. You may wish to import them to a second speaker in your SmartPalate software to listen, watch, and imitate as you practice each level s exercises: Add A Speaker Isolation: Pr_Initial_Level1.wav Simple Words: Pr_Initial_Level2.wav Complex Words: Pr_Initial_Level3.wav Phrases: Pr_Initial_Level4.wav Sentences: Pr_Initial_Level5.wav Click the add speaker icon in the upper right-hand corner to split the screen into two speakers. What Does Initial Pr Look Like? This image shows an average target area for the Pr sound. While key features will remain the same for each speaker, individuals will see some variation from this model. Initial Pr will look similar, if not identical, to the Pr sound in other placements: Mark The Sensors 1 2 Mark the sensors for your own R target. You may have variations from the above picture depending on your custom palate configuration. Key Features: 1. The P sound is made with lip closure and no tongue-to-palate contact. 2. To make the R sound the tongue touches the inside of the back teeth and the gums along the back of the mouth. The front of the tongue is either slightly curled upward or bunched towards the back of the mouth. Warm Up: Put in your SmartPalate and swallow several times. Carefully take a sip of water as needed. Speak casually for seconds and use the Oral Coordination exercise to warm up your tongue! 2
Isolation Level 1 In each level you will see boxes. These can be used to track your progress by marking correct and incorrect productions of the Initial Pr, based on the visual feedback provided in your SmartPalate software. Repeat the Pr sound. Light up the blue circles by matching your tongue to the target. Avoid lighting up orange circles. Use the boxes to track your progress. Simple Words Level 2 Repeat the following words. Include additional Initial Pr words you use regularly in the lines provided. PRAISE PROVE PROMPT PROBE PRANK PROP PROSE PROD PRO PRUNE PRINT PRY PRIME PRIZE PRIM PRESS PROOF PROWL PRICE PRAY PRUDE 3 Ex. Marking The Boxes Mark the boxes with a or x to represent if you said the R sound correctly. Look at how well you matched your tongue target to help you decide how accurately you said the sound.
Complex Words Level 3 Repeat the following words. Include additional Initial Pr words you use regularly in the lines provided. PROMISE PRISON PRESENCE PRESIDENT PRECISE PROLONG PRODUCE PRIVILEGE PRINCIPLE PREVIOUSLY PROBABLY PROPEL PRIMARY PREVENT PROTEIN PRESSURE PROCESS PRETTY PROMOTION PROFOUND PROBLEM Phrases Level 4 Repeat the following phrases. Include additional Initial Pr phrases you use regularly in the lines provided. PRETTY PRINCESS PRACTICAL PREPARATION PROMOTE PROGRESS PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTION 4
PROMISE PRESENTS PROJECT PROFIT PROMPT PROCEDURE PROVIDE PROTECTION PRIM & PROPER Sentences Level 5 Repeat the following sentences. Include additional Initial Pr sentences you use regularly in the lines provided. EVEN A PRODIGY PRACTICES PROPER TECHNIQUE. WHERE CAN WE PRINT THE PROGRAM FOR A GOOD PRICE? THE MEDIA PRESSED THE PRINCE FOR PRIVATE DETAILS ABOUT THE PROPOSAL. THE PROFESSOR PREFERS TO PREDICT PROBLEMS. 5
Beyond Sentences Level 6 Once you are more comfortable with the Pr sound you will want to start practicing your new skills without the aid of the SmartPalate. Spend some time at the end of each session doing some or all of the following: Practice Pr in isolation, just as in Level 1, this time using Gold Standard. Set the time to 1, 2, 5, or 10 seconds and record your score. Repeat Levels 2 through 6 using Gold Standard with the time set to continuous. Have a parent, SLP, or other individual watch for your highest score in each word. Repeat the level(s) you worked on today while wearing your SmartPalate, but turn away from the screen so that you cannot see the feedback yourself. Have a parent, SLP, or other individual watch how closely you hit your target. Repeat the level(s) you worked on today without using your SmartPalate. Repeat the level(s) you worked on today in a different room without your SmartPalate. Tell a story or talk about your day, using words with Initial Pr, with or without the SmartPalate. Clean Up: 1. Carefully remove, clean, and store your SmartPalate in accordance with all recommended procedures. 2. Save any new files or recordings. 3. Export and any recording or target files for home or clinic practice as necessary. 4. Close your SmartPalate Software. Additional Notes: 6
