Contractual issue between Brookdale Chestnut Lane and DHS Employment opportunity Accommodation issues and the list goes on.

11 Friends of Chestnut Lane An independent and non-profit organization Separate from Brookdale Chestnut Lane Can operate the organization within Brookdale Chestnut Lane facility Residents are encouraged to participate Staff and management cannot advise or guide Friends of Chestnut Lane due to conflicts of interest Recommendation of action plan is for them to seek partnership with Oregon Association of the Deaf (OAD) and Cerebral Palsy and Deaf Organization (CPADO) in guiding this organization.

12 Application to become a resident Contact Brookdale Chestnut Lane Refer to Medicaid for assessment and approval Process may take minimum 6 weeks The timeline can prove challenging for Brookdale Chestnut Lane Upon approval, the residents may move into the facility

13 Challenge in DHS contract Negotiation Decrease 100% to 75% requirement of staffing in fulfilling the requirement of ASL Challenge Difficulty in hiring qualified individuals who sign Failure to fulfill the contract expectation could led to Medicaid fraud Future Plan Encourage staff to learn sign language Set an internal goal for 100% even though the contract says 75%

16 Action Plan Management and community will meet quarterly Next meeting will be near end of February to provide management an opportunity to attend Deafhood Ally workshop hosted by OAD in Salem During the next 90 days Meet with ORID and OAD on RID s Code of Professional Conduct Deaf and Hearing Work Together by Communications Works! ProTactile training by Tactile Communications Partner with Regional Resource Center on Deafness at Western Oregon University Partner with Oregon State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation Explore an option of a wage increase for staff with unique skills, ASL Brookdale Chestnut Lane to partner with OAD to advocate for potential resident candidates

17 Action Plan During the next 90 days Brad and Chad will schedule a meeting with Friends of Chestnut Lane Identify resident s communication preferences in their Care Plan Partner with OAD in hosting community days Brad will provide OAD a job announcement every Friday Brookdale Chestnut Lane will explore options for communication and hiring process policies for this individual facility because of Deaf culture and language Strengthen the communication access among the DeafBlind residents ASL classes will be taught by a Deaf staff member
