1 MRID UPDATE I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : MRID Board 2 Educational Interpreters Committee 3 Editor s Note Fall Conference 4 Region III Conference 5 News from the Board 6 Community Events 7 J U L Y - A U G U S T Greetings From The President Hello! I was excited to wrap up the academic year by visiting schools and talking to kids and young adults about interpreting, ASL and the Deaf communities we serve. It was amazing to see the faces on all the different aged people at a variety of levels of engagement. The highlight was working with some young students at Emerson Spanish Emerson Learning Center in Minneapolis. They were hungry to learn specific signs after getting to see signers from our Deaf Somali community. More opportunities have arisen to visit a variety of different places this fall. We are putting out the call to invite those of you who would like to come and donate time to talk about your craft, your passion and hopefully light the flame for our future workforce. The fall will also include celebrating our 45th Nathan Ellis anniversary year! Look out for information s o o n o n eve n t s happening this fall. This summer, I will be representing Minnesota at our Region III conference in Louisville, Kentucky. I am excited to share ideas and learn new approaches from colleagues. Until then, be well!

3 P A G E 3 Educational Interpreters Committee Hello from the Educational Interpreter s Committee (EIC)! Can you believe it s JUNE?! Many educational interpreters are wrapping up the 2015/16 school year and grabbing their sunglasses, swimsuits, a good book and a towel diving head first into summer! Whoo hoo! Pat yourselves on the back and celebrate that you ve made a difference in someone s educational experience and provided access to social, emotional, cognitive, and other information. Educational interpreting is no easy job, and we applaud you! Over the long summer months (that always seem to fly by too quickly) we hope our skills don t have to atrophy as we take our needed rest. What a great opportunity we have to reflect on the past year of work, determine what our strengths were and where we d like to grow - and then work on that this summer! We encourage educational interpreters who are off for the summer to continue doing work - perhaps in other realms (freelance assignments, VRS, etcetera). Let s keep our skills up and further develop our work so we are ready to hit the ground running in the fall. It s always amazing when a freelance or VRS job brings you working with a Deaf professional in an topic which later shows up in the classroom. We place the Deaf learners access to meaningful language and information in the classroom as a priority, and this means that we are always responsible to be adding to our toolkit and developing our skills. Fortunately, in this day and age we can also make use of social media and technology which gives us access to hundreds and thousands of videos, vlogs, articles, and discussions regarding a wide array of topics that are relevant to our work. Not only that, but there are live workshops, community events, and other opportunities to stay engaged. We wouldn t be the EIC if we didn t humble-brag a bit about our services! If we can assist you in finding a mentor or partner to work with this summer on interpreting skills or ethical considerations, do not hesitate to ask! If the community wants it, perhaps we can host a ed terp summer get together! Also, if you haven t been caught up with the monthly articles/vlogs the EIC has put out for the last several months - take the time (perhaps while floating in the pool) to read/watch them to catch up! Our most recent publication was an informal interview with Mary Cashman-Baaken about the RID credentialing moratorium and its impact on MN K-12 interpreters. Check it out! Equally awesome is our soon to come RESOURCES page! We are working out the details on where to host it on the site, but coming soon look for the detailed information we ve gathered about how to navigate the Quality Assurance (Q.A.) law as a MN K-12 interpreter. As Always, Happy Terpin! Jenee and Cari, EIC Co-Chairs
4 M R I D U P D A T E P A G E 4 Hello MRID! We ve officially made it over half way through 2016! I really appreciate you taking the time to learn what s been going on with MRID. I m still waiting for some of you to send in articles, reflections, or just fun quotes. This MRID Update is yours. Make it how you want it! The next deadline for submissions is August 15. Life has been pretty crazy for me lately. My fiancé and I bought a house in Andover and are planning our wedding for December! We are also going on vacation with his family to Texas during the first week of August. Hopefully I won t melt! ;) There have been a lot of changes this year already; I m looking forward to seeing what else this year has to bring. Getting this edition of the Update means that you ve already renewed your MRID membership though June 30, 2017; or it means that you have recently become a member of MRID. Thank you so much for contributing to this organization! That s all I have to say for now. Look for my next note in September! Have a great rest of your summer! 6 P A G E 6 Secretary s Message Hello everyone! Wow time has flown, I feel like I just wrote for the update last week. First off, I would like to say Congratulations to all of the graduates this year! We are so excited to see new colleagues in the field and are excited to work with and learn from you! I hope you are thinking about joining in MRID activities and committees, we would love to have you! An update from my role: I will be stepping down as Secretary this December as my term ends. I will be working with Liz Crosby to take over her position as Professional Development Committee Chair. Thank you Liz for your work and being willing to work in the position for the time that you did! I am excited about this new role and what it entails. For those of you who don't know me well, I have worked at the CATIE Center for the last 3 years, working with CEUs. I am fortunate enough to have the CATIE Center staff as a resource as I begin this position. My goal is to streamline MRID's processing procedures and hopefully, make it easier for members and community members to work with us to sponsor events. If you have any interest in joining the Board of MRID, please feel free to contact me at secretary@mrid.org! I would love to sit and talk with anyone who is interested and explain what my role looks like. You can join me during a meeting or after and check out how the role works. I am of course willing to serve as a resource when the term begins, I was mentored by out former Secretary, Dee Ramnarine, and would like to set the same example. Our Board is also excited to welcome Tamar Jackson Nelson to the team. She was appointed to the Metro Representative position during the May board meeting. As always, I am a resource for the members. Please feel free to contact me! Janine Schug MRID Secretary secretary@mrid.org Next MRID Board Meeting July 9, :30am- Social Time 10:00am- Meeting Starts 2800 Rice St Suite 154, St Paul, MN HELLO TO THE SOUTH Hello fellow MIRD members! I hope everyone is staying cool out there and enjoying the sun. While the summer seems to slow down quite a bit and may be hitting the pocketbooks of many freelancers please take this time to reflect on your spectacular work from the last six months. Be sure to applaud yourself and your colleagues for the hard work you and they have done. Take this time to also take care of yourself. As a freelancer or staff interpreter we become so busy providing an essential service to the communities we serve that we sometimes put things to the wayside. Those include spending time with family and friends, eating well, and exercising. Also be sure to check your antifreeze, transmission fluid and your tires. As the heat comes and goes it takes a toll on your engine s cooling system and the transmission fluid. In addition, your tires are essential for your car being able to stay on the road, especially when we are flying to a last minute job. Be sure also to check your shocks and struts, this is easily done by the layperson and here is how: put your hand or foot on the front and the rear bumpers of your car, now attempt to bounce the car up and down a few times, release your hand or foot, the car should only bounce or come up once. If it continues to bounce 2-3 times it is time for new struts or shocks. These keep your wheels on the road when you hit a bump and therefore is important if it is rainy or slick outside. Talk Soon, Mike Provancha MRID Southern Rep southernrep@mrid.org
