2 The conference was recessed for lunch at 12:00, with the business session resuming at 1:00 pm for a community forum moderated by Dan Brubaker, former Utahn (UAD Bulletin, July 2001, p. 2). During the community forum, two discussion groups were set up and each came up with suggestions and ideas to improve the education of deaf children. The forum lasted three hours (UAD Bulletin, July 2001, p. 2). USDB Superintendent Lee Robinson and Assistant Superintendent Joseph DiLorenzo attended the biennial conference and the Community Forum on Deaf Education (Nelson, UAD Bulletin, August 2001, p.1). Dr. Robert G. Sanderson was appointed as parliamentarian. Motions passed were: I. The mandate for the years shall be education of deaf children in Utah. II. Recognize the president emeritus of UAD now and thereafter. A flurry of motions regarding the two-year membership requirement to run for the board of directors and the number of directors on the board ensured, ending in having the issues tabled. 3 The conference concluded with a barbecue dinner. Dan Brubaker spoke briefly to the audience. As part of the entertainment for the conference dinner, Ricky moderated the Utah Deaf Trivia. Everyone had so much fun with this game (Kinney, UAD Bulletin, August 2001, p. 2). Ricky Rose, former chairman, then gave the oath of office to Ron Nelson, Peter Green, Valerie Kinney, Robert Kerr and Dennis Platt. Clay Crye and Robert O Brien were later sworn in. The board agreed to meet on the second Saturday of each month, starting at 9:00 am at the Utah Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (UAD Bulletin, July 2001, p. 2). UAD President s Message In issue of August 2001 UAD Bulletin, Ron Nelson, president assured that UAD will do its best to keep an eye on the current programs and events at USDB and work hard to ensure that those programs, which benefit deaf children will have the support of UAD. He said, The Deaf Mentor Program is a jewel! Other jewels were the Jean Massieu School and the Deaf Connections at Utah Community Center of Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He asked for community support for those programs to make sure that they continue for a long time to come (Nelson, UAD Bulletin, August 2001, p. 1).
4 UAD Announce Is At Your Service UAD Announce was an list that broadcasts announcements of interest to the Deaf community. There were many ways this mailing list could be used and this was for any Deaf community announcements Weddings Births Deaths Church activities any religion Social activities Open captioned movies Seminars/Workshops/Conferences Community news Deaf sport events Deaf organization meetings Job openings Utah Legislature bills (UAD Bulletin, August 2001, p. 6). NAD Board Visits Utah For the June 2001 board meeting, the National Association of the Deaf board of directors chose to visit Salt Lake City, Utah. They met June 15 and 16 at the Utah Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (later renamed to Robert G. Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). A town hall meeting was held Friday evening during which all expressed concerns about various issues. An issue, the stance taken on cochlear implants by NAD, was explained. Due to the media crush and desire to attract parents with Utah Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
5 deaf children with cochlear implants, the NAD implemented a more humane policy after a two-year committee study. The UCCDHH staff took the NAD board members on a tour of the community center and its ongoing construction of a new addition. Saturday evening, UAD hosted a dinner for the NAD board members at the Trolley Square. The visitors were so impressed with it that they took the time to browse among its many shops afterwards. Nancy Bloch, the NAD executive director, sent a thank-you card. An excerpt of her note is given below: your assistance with the details/logistics for our meeting and townhall meeting was invaluable and appreciated. The center and your programs are very impressive and we all left with the green tint of jealousy and envy with all you have accomplished in SLC. The cooperation between Rusty Wales, UCCDHH staff and UAD was superb (UAD Bulletin, July 2001, p. 5). UAD General Meeting Renews Flag Tradition On September 22, 2001, the timing of the meeting was unfortunate due to the tragedy on September 11, Only 20 people showed up. The UAD thanked these people for their attendance. A long moment of silence was held at the beginning of the meeting to honor the workers and victims of the tragedy. For the first time in many years, the American flag as well as the Utah state flag were displayed during the meeting and Dennis Platt led the Pledge of Allegiance (UAD Bulletin, October 2001, p. 1). UAD Board Mentioned in National DeafDigest On June 22, 2003, the DeafDigest Gold had the following comment: Should Utah Association of the Deaf run the national deaf affairs? Well, the experience among the board of directors is considerable:
6 Two past NAD presidents Four past and current NWAAD presidents Two past AAAD vice presidents Said Larry Forestal, the former NAD president of one recent board meeting, It was one of the fastest I have seen everywhere. Rodney Walker, president emeritus was recognized. During the voting session, two former NAD presidents, Robert Sanderson and Larry Forestal, were elected to the board along with two former UAD presidents, Dave Mortensen and Dennis Platt (Nelson, UAD Bulletin, July 2003, p. 2) Larry Forestal, former NAD nad.org. After the business sessions, a dinner was held in the gym and concluded the conference. Dennis Platt was the emcee, leading the program throughout the evening. Norma Lea Chrismon, Region IV representative from National Association of the Deaf, gave the keynote speech. Ron Nelson announced that a life membership and a gift would be presented to Sally Green. She supported the UAD through many years of her husband, Pete s work as UAD treasurer and UAD Bookstore manager before his death on May 25, 2003 (Kinney, UAD Bulletin, July 2003, p. 2 & 4). Pete Green was truly a dedicated UAD member, serving in various capacities. 9 member; National Association of the Deaf as a board member, 1976 to 1980; USD Alumni Reunion as chairman, 1978 and 1984, to name a few (UAD Bulletin, June 2003, p. 1). Junior UAD Junior UAD was established on April 30, 2003 at Bonneville Junior High School. Junior UAD was open to 7 th to 12 th graders. The goal was to learn teamwork, how to work together and have tons of fun. Kristi Mortensen was the Junior UAD advisor (Rainey, UAD Bulletin, June 2003, p. 4-5; Mortensen, K., UAD Bulletin, June 2003, p. 5). Kristi Mortensen explained why it was called Junior UAD instead of Junior NAD. She had been working with the students for several months. She observed that the information about NAD and Junior NAD was a huge picture for them and would go over their heads. Thus making it Junior UAD was better because of a close relationship with UAD. Kristi felt it was easier for the kids to develop connections with UAD. She said that several UAD Board members came to the school and visited with the 7 th to 12 th graders. Kristi hoped that eventually when they understand how UAD works Kristi Mortensen for the Deaf community, they will understand how NAD and Junior NAD are connected and will change from Junior UAD to Junior NAD (Mortensen, K., UAD Bulletin, June 2003, p. 5). UAD Receives NAD Award Eli McCowan and Nancy O Brien, UAD delegates, received a prestigious award on behalf of the Utah Association for the Deaf from National Association of the Deaf at
10 the NAD Conference in Kansas City, Kansas. NAD awarded the State Association Award to only two state associations, the Utah Association for the Deaf and the Florida Association of the Deaf. In the past, UAD usually had the conference in the summer every two years; however, that year it was in September Since the Winter Deaflympics was a special and unusual event in Utah, they changed the plan for the conference to be held in the fall instead of summer, which gave the committee more time to prepare (Kerr, UAD Bulletin, June

Prestigious Awards Given During UAD Conference Two prestigious awards were given during the UAD Conference on September 15, 2007, at the end of a successful three-day program. The Golden Hand Award was given to Sorenson Communications, a leading of Video Relay Services (VRS) for deaf and hard of hearing individuals who use American Sign Language. Ronald Burdett, vice president of community relations for Sorenson Communications, received the award on behalf of the company. The award is a recognition program of service in Utah, sponsored by the Utah Association for the Deaf. The UAD honored a local business that had developed a very strong supportive presence in the Utah Deaf community through its development and distribution of the videophone, making possible for deaf people to communicate in natural sign language, deaf to deaf, deaf to hearing, hearing to deaf through its relay system. It was a tremendous boon to all deaf people in Utah as well as other states (UAD Bulletin, October 2007, p. 1 & 5). The Distinguished Service Award was given to Dave Mortensen for his long time service to the Utah Association for the Deaf, especially with regard to his work with the Utah Legislature. He actively solicited the help of Robert Sanderson, Dave Mortensen, Miss Deaf American, and RobKerr, 2007.
16 his district representatives and senators on issues of importance to deaf people at a time when most of them did not get out and do some lobbying. Dave was effective, and the legislators listened and learned about deafness and deaf people. His lobbying, for example, gave push to the establishment of a Deaf Center the first one being the Utah Community Center for the Deaf in Bountiful. Dave also spoke to committees of the Community Councils of Salt Lake City, and United Way, which led to the establishment of interpreter service. Today, we have Utah Interpreter Program and a number of interpreting business. As the result of his push for interpreters in medical settings, the medical community was more aware of the need to call for interpreters for deaf people. Dave served the UAD in a variety positions, notably as president and as editor, since 1967 (UAD Bulletin, October 2007, p. 1 & 5). Entertainment was given by Keith Wann, a CODA, with an hour of comedy routines taken from his life experiences and that of other CODAs (UAD Bulletin, October 2007, p. 1 & 5).
