1 Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board SEAC Committee Meeting Minutes SEAC Committee Meeting Minutes Date & Time: Wed. Sept. 20, 2017 Location: Sacred Heart Mildmay Next Meeting: Thurs. Oct. 18, :30 a.m. Location: Immaculate Conception Committee Members: Mike Lemme (Trustee), Carole Zoldy (Grey- Bruce Down Syndrome Assoc.), Elisabeth Groenewegen (VOICE), Kim Stuempfle (Admin. Assistant), Michael Bethune (Superintendent of Education), Faith Shelley (Psychometrist), Sandra Kilby (Keystone Child Youth & Family Services), Theresa Harrietha (Instructional Leadership Consultant Special Education), Regrets: Tracey Slater (Speech Language Pathologist), Kim Scott (Behaviour and Transition Consultant), Jennifer McIsaac (Thames Valley CC), Natalka Pucan (First Nation) 1. Opening Prayer: The meeting was opened with the Special Education Committee prayer and Honouring the Land and Territory/The Seven Grandfather Teachings Prayer by Mike Bethune 2. Introductions : Introductions were made New Faces the committee are Faith Shelley who has replaced Jenny Cardwell as the Board s Psychometrist and Kim Stuempfle replaces Cathy Kelly as Administrative Assistant. 3.Updates: Principal: Murray sent his regrets as he was unable to attend today. An update was presented by Mike to the committee. (attached) Superintendent : Reviewed the purpose of SEAC & Board EQAO Results Special Need Strategy: IRS (provincial framework) on hold but biboards meetings will continue to happen Purpose is to provide continuous service (speech, language, occupational, physical) to all students birth to end of school Carole Zoldy: Down Sydrome Association: Carole will be attending the Provincial Conference Oct. 27 th & 28 th in Toronto. Elisabeth Groenewegen: VOICE: Nothing to report.
2 Theresa Harrietha: Instructional Leadership Consultant Special Education Theresa discussed the students who are currently involved in our Provincial Schools There are 3 students attending the demonstration school, Amethest; the Outreach Program is supporting a blind student transition from the blind school in Brantford to our school board and things seem to be going well for the student. There are also 4 grade 8 students taking grade 9 academic math online through Avon Maitland. SIP Special Incident Portion; claims have been forwarded for funding for 3 students, the supports are already in place Inquiries (2) for service animals to support students. It is currently under review. A new ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis Assistant) Rayanne Dawe, has been hired. She provides coaching support to staff at schools where strategies need to be developed to promote independence. There has been an increase in the number of students and the severity & complexity of their support. This has increased EA allocation in the schools. Mental Health Services are available through a CYW visiting at each of the elementary schools 1 to 2 times a week. A full time CYW is at SHHS and 1 ½ CYW at SMHS. Trustees: Mike Lemme reported that changes are being made to policies but nothing specific to report until after the first Board meeting on Sept. 25, 2017 Sandra Kilby: Keystone Child & Youth Family Service: Soft launch of the Quick Response Clinic has been very well received Currently no wait list at any of the sites Families are getting services within 2 weeks of requests Workshops and groups are happening and will continue to be developed at the needs arise Information about the groups and workshops can be found on the calendar Faith Shelley: Psychometrist: New to the position so nothing to report. Faith will be working under the supervision of Dr. Wayne Richardson. 4. Special Education in Ontario K-12 New document that combining policies (see link above) It will live online at the Ministry website so that information is current Will be using this document to assist in updating the Special Education Plan for the Board. Deferred some documents that need to updated until the next meeting.
