Good health practce requres that a person wth a tnntus condton have a medcal evaluaton by a lcensed physcan (preferably a physcan who specalzes n dseases of the ear) before usng a sound generator. Lcensed physcans who specalze n dseases of the ear are often referred to as otolaryngologsts, otologsts or otorhnolaryngologsts. The purpose of medcal evaluaton s to assure that all medcally treatable condtons that may affect tnntus are dentfed and treated before the sound generator nstrument s used. The sound generator nstrument s a tool to generate sounds to be used wth approprate counsellng and/or n a tnntus management programme to releve patents sufferng from tnntus. 25 22 Warnng to hearng ad professonals (US Only) A hearng care professonal should advse a prospectve hearng ad user to consult promptly wth a lcensed physcan (preferably an ear specalst) before dspensng a hearng ad f the hearng ad professonal determnes through nqury, actual observaton, or revew of any other avalable nformaton concernng the prospectve user, that the prospectve user has any of the followng condtons: 1. Vsble congental or traumatc deformty of the ear. 2. Hstory of actve dranage from the ear wthn the prevous 90 days. 3. Hstory of sudden or rapdly progressve hearng loss wthn the prevous 90 days. 4. Acute or chronc dzzness. 5. Unlateral hearng loss of sudden or recent onset wthn the prevous 90 days. 6. Audometrc ar-bone gap equal to or greater than 15 decbels at 500 hertz (Hz), 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz. 7. Vsble evdence of sgnfcant cerumen accumulaton or a foregn body n the ear canal. 8. Pan or dscomfort n the ear. 23 Important notce for prospectve hearng ad users (US Only) Good health practce requres that a person wth a hearng loss have a medcal evaluaton by a lcensed physcan (preferably a physcan who specalzes n dseases of the ear) before purchasng a hearng ad. Lcensed physcans who specalze n dseases of the ear are often referred to as otolaryngologsts, otologsts or otorhnolaryngologsts. The purpose of medcal evaluaton s to assure that all medcally treatable condtons that may affect hearng are dentfed and treated before the hearng ad s purchased. Followng the medcal evaluaton, the physcan wll gve you a wrtten statement that states that your hearng loss has been medcally evaluated and that you may be consdered a canddate for a hearng ad. The physcan wll refer you to an audologst or a hearng care professonal, as approprate, for a hearng ad evaluaton. The audologst or hearng care professonal wll conduct a hearng ad evaluaton to assess your ablty to hear wth and wthout a hearng ad. The hearng ad evaluaton wll enable the audologst or hearng care professonal to select and ft a hearng ad to your ndvdual needs. If you have reservatons about your ablty to adapt to amplfcaton, you should nqure about the avalablty of a tral-rental or purchase-opton programme. Many hearng care professonals now offer programmes that permt you to wear a hearng ad for a perod of tme for a nomnal fee after whch you may decde f you want to purchase the hearng ad. Federal law restrcts the sale of hearng ads to those ndvduals who have obtaned a medcal evaluaton from a lcensed physcan. Federal law permts a fully nformed adult to sgn a waver statement declnng the medcal evaluaton for relgous or personal belefs that preclude consultaton wth a physcan. The exercse of such a waver s not n your best health nterest and ts use s strongly dscouraged. 24 Chldren wth hearng loss (US Only) In addton to seeng a physcan for a medcal evaluaton, a chld wth a hearng loss should be drected to an audologst for evaluaton and rehabltaton snce hearng loss may cause problems n language development and the educatonal and socal growth of a chld. An audologst s qualfed by tranng and experence to assst n the evaluaton and rehabltaton of a chld wth a hearng loss
