SOLUS screens are a flexible, digital media communication tool, which will be used across healthcare settings within Inverclyde CHCP to convey a variety of information to service users and staff The tool will enable the CHCP to convey messages on a variety of issues including health improvement, local facility / practice information, Infection control e.g. Hand Washing, Flu etc. Local Services will also be able to display local information such as key achievements and service announcements e.g. new opening hours, location changes Who is the lead reviewer and where based? The audio levels can be adjusted remotely to ensure a volume setting most comfortable and appropriate to the viewing/listening area Some campaigns e.g. Hand Hygiene are more pictorial based or Swine Flu campaign or have short sharp messages. This again supports and re-enforces peoples understanding. SOLUS inbuilt content, such as text feeds, have the option to be set up in compliance with the RNIB guidelines. This ensures an appropriate information. There is currently a lack of pictorial information held on the database. This could adversely impact people with learning difficulties/ and generally people with communication difficulties. In some venues, the volume levels are turned down low to help the receptionist communicate with patients within the practice. This can have a negative impact on people who are both hard of hearing but not Deaf. The speed of slide transition may
3 text size and range of approved colour combinations that provide the contrast needed to help people with visual impairment Induction Loop SOLUS can be configured to channel the audio into induction loop systems, allowing people with hearing problems to switch their hearing aids to the loop channel. This effectively cuts out all the background noise and ensures that the audio from the SOLUS system is clean. Text delivery is static, with no scrolling, blinking or animation, as this is very difficult and sometimes impossible to read by those with visual impairment and those uncomfortable with flashing and strobe lighting. Sexual Orientation Information can be published around campaigns. Religion and belief No good practice identified No negative impact need to be slowed down in order that people can fully understand key messages. The screens predominantly rely on people being able to read which has a potential negative impact on their ability to use them to communicate with people with literacy problems. Need to ensure that content for Solus Database takes into account needs of different groups and campaigns for eg where information related to sexual health and sexual practices it is appropriate for use in a public space where children are present, and where the info may be viewed by people with strong religious beliefs. Age (Children/Young People/Older People) Information on Child and Adult Protection can be published to the screens with relevant contact Need to ensure that content for Solus Database takes into account needs of
4 Social Class/ Socio-Economic Status details. different groups and campaigns for eg content for children and young people as part of the overall range of info published to SOLUS. This information can routinely reviewed by the Youth Health Forum. Information on poverty aleviation (such as Money Matters financial advice etc) can be published to the screens,along with other information about community based services. Need to ensure that content for Solus Database takes into account needs of different groups and makes the most of specific campaigns
5 Additional marginalisation All Information can be provided for people who face additional marginalisation; information can include access to mental health services, homeless services, housing services. A communication group has been established to support the development of content for the Solus Screens. The group works closely with G.P practices and Team Leaders to quality control the information going onto the screens. Areas have been assessed and screens will be positioned where there are the highest level of service users and members of the public. Training has been delivered to staff who will be uploading/ administering content onto the screens. Ongoing consultation is being planned through the PPF, Youth Health Forum, Health Advocacy Group and GP Practice Patient Forums SOLUS inbuilt content, such as text feeds, have the option to be set up in compliance with the RNIB guidelines. This ensures an appropriate text size and range of approved colour combinations that provide the contrast needed to help the visually impaired. Need to ensure that people are not excluded due to literacy issues. Inverclyde CHCP has high levels of people with literacy challenges Need to review and understand process for reviewing content to ensure specific information is on Solus Database for all equality groups. 6 Ensure Solus database contains relevant content to target different groups Learning disability service staff to produce helpful tips in making information more appealing and accessible to people with a Learning Disability. This will feed into the communications group. Consider the use of sound/picture or video to aleviate issues with literacy. Solus Administrator Specific Actions Ensure that beside each solus screen there is additional information available for people to take away and read. This can include translated information. E.g. Swine Flu.
