And from the word go, we at Wieland would like to inspire you with our magazine, Wieland direct and update you on the latest creative solutions. The subject of digitization continues to be a focus of attention and in our industry, the term digital is often equated with change. In other sectors, digital has long since become the norm and is an everyday fact of life. Page 10 On the occasion of the recent IDS 2011 trade fair, we presented a further advance in digitization, the monolithic dental restoration. Our Zenostar concept has not only been welcomed with enthusiasm by our already digitally-minded customers but also attracted the attention of and awakened interest in many new customers. This means that we have succeed in establishing for ourselves a worldwide reputation for esthetic all-zirconia restorations and the technological equipment required to manufacture them. In the form of the Zenotec Sci.ence platform, we have set up and firmly consolidated a service for special indications for the benefit of our customers. In addition to the commercial success of decentralized laboratory solutions such as the Zenotec Mini and Zenostar, this enables extremely complex technical solutions such as customized titanium abutments and implant-borne superstructures to be ordered. The digital process still has a long way to go. Intra-oral scanners are gaining ground. Our first ventures into this area are very promising indeed above all in the context of Zenostar restorations which for the most part no longer require the use of dental models. At the beginning of the year we set new standards and invested in one of the latest generation of heavy-duty presses. This hydraulic press weighing over 20 metric tons has been optimized for the production of zirconia blanks and is currently just about the world s strongest axial press in use in the dental sector. The extreme pressure exerted by this machine ensures that the ceramic powder is densely compacted and very homogeneous, thus producing blanks of the highest quality. This is how we rise to the challenges set by our customers who are always ready to provide us with constructive, sometimes critical appraisals and inspire us to press ahead with a process of constant improvement and development. 4 release Greater flexibility through the use of the Zenotec Trios intra-oral scanner Digital imaging makes dental technology even more flexible Over the last few years the use of model scanners has made dental technology more and more efficient. There is no longer any need to discuss the time savings and resultant cost savings when compared to conventional dental technology. This has been borne out by a number of different studies and independent experience in the lab. Instead, attention has been focused on obtaining greater added value from new types of scanners, software add-ons, production systems and new materials. The Zenotec Trios obtainable from Wieland Dental when used in conjunction with the Zenostar concept gives the dental lab yet another way to offer digitally manufactured dental restorations. A digital opportunity for the dental lab: Zenotec Trios intra-oral scanner in conjunction with Zenostar crowns At the touch of a button, the preparation digitized using the Zenotec Trios scanner is transmitted as a digital file to the dental lab in the form of a complete dental situation, i.e. including adjacent and opposing teeth and bite registration. The image data is available to the dental lab almost in real time and work can begin on the design using existing modellation software. It is possible to begin creating the dental restoration before the patient in question has even left the chair. Dispatching by courier, casting the impressions and articulating the models have already been achieved digitally. The occlusion of the Zenostar restoration is adjusted in the software using the virtual articulator without the need for a model. Once the design is complete, it can, if necessary, be validated by the clinician. Then the lab exports the digital file of the Zenostar crown to its own milling machine or to a milling center. Zenotec Trios intra-oral scanner The Zenotec Trios intra-oral scanner completes the digital workflow, i.e. from impression taking through transfer of digital data and modellation with articulation to the subsequent validation of the design by the dental practitioner. 5 release The Zenostar materials available for selection are Zenostar Zr Translucent milling blanks in the shades pure, light, medium, intense, sun and sun chroma, which can be individualized by using stains from the Zenostar Art Focus / Complete module sets or veneered with Zenoflex dimension. Above all, the warm, reddish shade of the Zenostar Zr Translucent blanks in the shades sun and sun chroma, which have been available since this summer, are especially suitable for use as a basis for restorations with individualized shading and can therefore be used for patients whose natural tooth shade deviates from the classical shades. This translucent zirconia material can be used both for making frameworks and for the CAD/CAM production of monolithic restorations. The highly translucent Zenostar Zr Translucent blanks in the shades pure, light, medium and intense. The Zenostar Zr Translucent sun and sun chroma blanks feature a warm, reddish basic shade. With the Zenostar Art Module Focus or Complete you can obtain fascinating results. In some situations, a working model is essential. For the CAD/CAM production of models when using the new Zenotec Trios intra-oral scanner, Wieland therefore offers robust and unbreakable 25 mm Zenotec model blanks. They are made of polyurethane plastic and can be milled into models with the Zenotec T1 and the Zenotec mini from Wieland. The high density and homogeneity of this material ensure a smooth and even surface quality, making the blanks easy to mill whilst the uniformity of the material chips makes milling gentle on the extractor system. Milling without a model is as easy as it could be: Trim the intra-oral scan. / Define the occlusal plane. / Trim the scan of the opposing teeth. / Adjust the occlusal plane, if not correctly scanned. / Select the stumps and define their prep margins. The dies are then generated. / Select the Zenotec articulator, <3Shape Quadrant>. / The models of the die and the opposing teeth are generated. / Design the restoration in DentalDesigner. 6 release Wieland Dental sets new quality standards for blanks Optimized production process ensures maximum values for strength and translucence A great deal of expertise is required to produce zirconia blanks for the fabrication of dental restorations. Both the selection of a high-quality, high-purity raw material powder and the use of optimized processing techniques and parameters during the compacting, thermal debinding and pre-sintering of the pressed blanks have a significant effect on the properties of the end product. Scrupulous quality assurance measures before and after each stage of the process ensure that the user and the patient receive a safe, reliable and biocompatible medical product which remains stable over a long period of time. The optimized axial compaction process using a high-power press which is unique in the dental industry delivers excellent results Wieland has invested in the latest generation of automated high-performance presses. This heavy-duty hydraulic press weighing over 20 t has been optimized for the manufacture of zirconia blanks, is one of the most powerful presses in use in the dental industry. However, sheer power alone is not enough to meet the most stringent quality requirements. In order to achieve especially homogeneous compaction, the pressure is applied evenly to both sides of the ceramic powder, whereby the two dies are controlled independently of each other and with the greatest possible precision. In the so-called axial pressing process, the powder is poured from a feeder into the gap between the mold and the lower die of the tool and is then pressed into the required shape. In the wet bag CIP (cold isostatic pressing) process, however, pressure is applied to all sides of a rubber mold filled with granulate. In this case, the pressed items must be finished after compacting, since the elastic mold can not create a clearly defined shape. But nowadays these two processes can be combined; for example, when the compaction pressure achieved by the axial press is not great enough to obtain the density required for the green blank, the work can subsequently be compacted even further in a second, isostatic pressing process. 7 release History of the Wieland compaction process reveals impressive development Further advances in the areas of strength and translucence Progress Competitors The positive development achieved in terms of light transmission (the measure of how translucent the material is) from 2005 to 2012 is an impressive indication that optimizing the raw material powder and the compaction technology / parameters has enabled an increase in light transmission of over 60 % to be achieved. The high translucence is also an indicator of lower residual porosity and consequently of a higher density in the final product. And when compared to the translucent materials of competitors, Zenostar Zr Translucent is truly impressive. By optimizing the raw materials and process parameters, it has also proved possible to increase the flexural strength of the zirconia blanks by approx. 40 % since they were introduced in In order to achieve high strength values, it is necessary to obtain a virtually flawless and non-porous structure. Then an individual label is applied to the blank specifying the exact expansion or shrinkage factor (accurate to four decimal places). This means that a perfect fit can be achieved. The 0.3 mm fissure bur will be of particular interest to users who focus on full-contour Zenostar restorations. For these indications in particular, the use of 0.3 mm fissure burs delivers very finely worked occlusal surfaces for full-contour crown and bridge work as well enabling a very fine separation of the interdental areas of full-contour zirconia restorations.
