Study of Mood
Study of Mood Mood indicates the manner in which the action is conceived. The feeling that a sentence conveys is called the mood. Mood may be defined as a set of verb forms used to indicate the speaker s attitude. There are 3 moods: indicative, subjunctive, imperative.
Study of Mood Three sentences with three different moods: I love my neighbor. Love your neighbor. If I were to love my neighbor, I would be happy. What different feelings are conveyed in each sentence?
Study of Mood Three sentences with three different moods: Tina eats her food. Eat your food Tina. If Tina eats her food, she will be full. What different feelings are conveyed in each sentence?
Study of Mood: Indicative The indicative mood makes a statement of fact or asks a question. This mood clearly indicates an action: I love I loved I will love
Study of Mood: Subjunctive The subjunctive mood expresses a doubt, a wish, or a prayer. If I love If you love If they had loved It can also have a conditional form that expresses an action dependent upon a condition: If I were to love my neighbor, I would be happy. This mood does not clearly express an action. We do not know from this sentence, whether or nor I actually love.
Study of Mood: Imperative The imperative mood gives a command or make a request. The root of this word comes from emperor. love your neighbor Be love "The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi." To have been loved If you had a what command would you give? How does it feel? Does it have to be rough?
