12 Improving Health for the Elderly through Increased Dairy Consumption Objective Conduct a RCT to demonstrate that increased dairy consumption reduces risk of fractures in older and elderly individuals anti-fracture efficacy of dairy products Hypothesis Elderly consume less than recommended daily dairy intake resulting in high incidence of fractures, increase in morbidity/mortality Increased dairy products will reduce falls & fractures

16 Can Whey Protein Improve Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes Objective Investigate if whey proteins can be used as a natural alternative to prescription oral insulin medications for the clinical management of T 2 diabetes Hypothesis Pre-meal intake of WP can lower postprandial glucose levels & improve longterm glycemic control in T 2 DM patients How Can We Make Diet Relevant in the Age of Powerful Drugs?

17 Can Whey Protein Improve Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes Human clinical trials started at UCDMS Dept. of Endocrinology Screening of min. 300 diabetics On-going recruitment Target 60 diabetics 3-h meal tolerance test 11 points glucose monitoring, FFA, insulin, c-peptide 3-day controlled feeding WPI or placebo, continuous glucose monitoring M-T, cross over 3-month free living randomized study with 2 arms WPI or placebo, 30 patients at each arm

18 Can Whey Protein Improve Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes Expected Outcomes WP stimulates insulin secretion - will normalize insulin response in diabetics WP lowers blood glucose levels after meals WP achieves sustained long-term improvements in overall sugar control in diabetic patients WP reduce diabetes related long-term complications (eye, kidney, heart, nerve pain, foot sores, etc.) Potentially patients would be more willing to try a beneficial product natural product than a chemical product
