1 McKinley Adult and Center August 10, 2012 Derrick Richards, Director 726 Elm Street Adrian, MI Dear Parents and Community Members: We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the educational progress for the MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTER. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Derrick Richards, Director, for assistance. The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site or you may review a copy available in the McKinley Education Center Main Office. For , MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTER did not make Adequate Yearly Progress because of our graduation rate. We are actively working to address the district issues by limiting acceptance of out-ofdistrict students into this program. The nature of the graduation rate calculations require students to graduate within four years of starting high school. However, the MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTEr is a program designed to help students who have struggled in traditional schools work towards earning a diploma. Some students do not graduate within four years and MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTER serves students from throughout Lenawee County. The majority of students attending the MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTER were not APS students, initially. Instead, they left the district they started high school in and moved to the MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTER looking to find success in school. Sadly, they entered our program off-track toward graduating within four years and count against MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTER and ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS with regards to graduation rate. School Name Reason(s) for not making AYP Key actions underway to address the issues McKinley Adult and Alternative Education Center Graduation Rate Changes to support system and no longer accepting out-of-district students into program Applying for seat-time waiver and creating MMC diploma option to help alleviate barriers to students MCKINLEY ADULT AND ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CENTER offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of this community. They include: /High School Completion Classes are available for those students under 19 years of age, who are looking to receive their high school diploma. During these classes you will be completing courses such as; mathematics,, Science, Social Studies, and even electives that are needed to complete the high school diploma requirements. Adult Education/High School Completion Classes are available for adults (20+ years old) who are looking to receive their high school diploma. During these classes you will complete courses in;, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and elective courses; which will lead to your high school diploma. GED Preparation These classes will help prepare and assist you with the knowledge needed to take the GED exam. During these classes you will learn essential GED skills and complete practice tests that will determine your readiness.

2 The Michigan School Report Cards do not address Adult Education (age 20 and above) or Preschool Programs in any way. Adult Education students are not required to participate in MEAP and are not part of either Education YES! or AYP. Adult education programs will not receive an Education YES! grade nor AYP status. Young adult education participants who are served because they have been permanently expelled from school and have no appropriate education program available to them are not counted among students that are required to participate in MEAP, MME, or MI-Access. This policy is limited only to those students that are permanently expelled and that are not counted for the foundation allowance under the State School Aid Act. students that are counted as public school students under the State School Aid Act are treated as any other student for both Education YES! and AYP. Because our school has not made AYP for one year, we are in Phase 1. State law requires that we also report additional information.
