12 Mental Health EAP Background Information Mental Health is an important dimension of the health and well-being of student athletes. A Mental Health Emergency Action Plan is a plan put in place to help serve student athletes that have a mental health illness. The Dr. J. Michael Harding Center for Health and Wellness (CHW) is an integrated wellness center offering services in two areas: Medical and Counseling Services. Each student has access to counseling services and a counselor is on call 24/7 if needed. Student athletes have the same access and can make an appointment during the normal work day Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm by calling Pre-Participation Mental Health Screening During the pre-participation exam that each student athlete will go through every year, the student athlete will also complete a Wellness Questionnaire through the Athletic Trainer System Portal. This wellness screening will include questions related to: General mental health questions Disordered eating Depression Anxiety Alcohol use Cannabis use Sleep apnea Insomnia ADHD Each student athlete will complete the screening privately. All answers will remain confidential. The athletic trainer assigned to that sport will go over the wellness questionnaires. The Center for Health and Wellness will serve as a consultant upon reviewing the questionnaires. If a student is referred to the Center for Health and Wellness or counseling, student athletes will be able to sign a medical release allowing the Head Athletic Trainer to know who is being seen and also to help make the athlete accountable for the follow-up meeting with the counseling center. A Wellness Questionnaire will be done yearly and all student athlete responses will be kept confidential and in their patient file in the ATS Portal Emergency Action Plan 1. Any athlete identified from responses on the Wellness Screening by the Athletic Trainer will need to follow-up with a meeting. The Athletic Trainer of that athlete will hold them accountable for this follow-up. If the athletic trainer feels they need to 11

13 be seen by the Center for Health and Wellness, they will initiate the conversation and assist them in scheduling an apt. 2. Any athlete identifying as having a mental illness and showing signs of a mental illness will be addressed by the athletic trainer for that team. After a one on one with the athletic trainer: a. The athletic trainer can suggest a meeting with the Center for Health & Wellness b. The athletic trainer can accompany the person down to the Center for Health and Wellness c. The athletic trainer can inform the counseling center of the situation and allow them to reach out to the student athlete 3. Any athlete suspected of a mental health condition by the coach, teammate or friend will be referred to the Center for Health and Wellness 4. After being evaluated by the Center for Health & Wellness, the counselor will make the decision on treatment for the student athlete. Treatment options may include: a. Scheduled sessions with counselor and a treatment plan laid out b. Periodically checking in on student-athlete c. Referring on to another medical professional as outlined in the Center for Health and Wellness Policies and Procedures. 12
