Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine Mission Statement The mission of the Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine Department is to provide a safe environment and the best possible, expedient healthcare for the student athletes of Brewton Parker College. This mission will be completed through education prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of injuries. The department will maintain a high level of ethical and professional standards to ensure the student athlete of the highest level of healthcare. I. Pre Participation Physical Evaluations A. All Student Athletes 1. All student athletes must undergo a physical evaluation prior to their participation in intercollegiate athletics. The pre-participation physical evaluation MUST be completed before organized participation (practice or conditioning) begins and MUST be completed by a Brewton Parker College Team Physician. While the examination is effective for one year, the Team Physician may re-evaluate the athlete s health for participation at any time. All team candidates may lose their clearance status if the following are not completed: Signed Assumption of Risk Release of Medical Information Under Age 18 Waiver Signed Concussion Statement Signed Sickle Cell Statement Supplementation Notification Form Completed Emergency Contact Information Signed Random Drug Test Consent Form 1 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

II. Completed Insurance Form and Copy of Front and Back of Current Insurance Card Signed Agreement of Policies and Procedures Signed Consent for Care Signed Policies and Procedures Acknowledgement Signed Insurance Information All other medical information as requested by the team physician or Sports Medicine Staff. 2. A complete medical history MUST be provided to the athletic trainer or team physician before the physical evaluation. Failure to report conditions may result in disqualification from intercollegiate activity or delayed clearance to participate in intercollegiate activity. 3. Any or all pre-existing injuries or medical conditions MUST be reported and documented to the Brewton Parker Sports Medicine Staff. This must be done prior to, or at the time of the initial physical evaluation. Brewton Parker College will not be financially responsible for any bills that are generated by a preexisting condition. 4. Student athletes with special conditions may be referred to specialists for evaluation. Failure to report special conditions will release Brewton Parker College from any liability in the event of another injury caused by or related to the unreported condition. Any tests (x-rays included) or referral to specialists to conclude a student athlete s physical evaluation will be the responsibility of the student athlete and his/her family. 5. Loss of one or the paired organs (e.g. kidney, eye) or any other condition that is determined by the team physician to be detrimental to the student athlete s health and well-being may disqualify a candidate from participation in intercollegiate athletics. 6. If a student athlete misses their scheduled physical, it is their responsibility to meet with a member of the Sports Medicine staff to reschedule a time for these evaluations. B. Auditions/Try-Outs/Workouts 1. The Athletic Department will not be responsible for an injury that may occur during an audition or try-out prior to the pre-season physical examination. A release and waiver must be signed before any student athlete can participate in an audition or try-out. A student wishing to try-out for a team must also provide proof of primary medical insurance and a physical form from a physician within the past six (6) months and proof of a Sickle Cell Test and/or a signed waiver. Insurance A. All student athletes who do not have adequate health/medical insurance, this includes policies that do not cover collegiate athletic injuries, will be required to purchase a policy that has been pre-approved by the Sports Medicine Staff. 2 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

B. Any student athlete who has been dropped from their respective health/medical insurance policy at any point during the academic year will not be allowed to practice and/or participate in any competition until they have assured re-establishment on their prior policy and/or new establishment in a policy approved by the Sports Medicine Staff. 1. All student athletes will be required to fill out an insurance packet prior to the beginning of their season to show proof of accident/illness insurance. This must be on file with the Sports Medicine Department. 2. Brewton Parker College no longer has a secondary insurance policy. This means that all athletic related injuries will be you and your parents/guardians responsibility. III. Injury/Illness Evaluation and Treatment A. An injury or illness sustained during in-season supervised practice or contest must be reported as soon as possible to the Sports Medicine staff. An Athletic Trainer will do a primary evaluation. 1. If the trauma or illness is beyond the Athletic Trainer s level of care, the student athlete will then be referred to one of our team physicians. A program of treatment and management will be prescribed. It will be the student athlete s responsibility to schedule treatment and rehabilitation. 2. The Sports Medicine staff cannot be held liable if the student athlete does not comply with the program that is prescribed. 3. The decision to return to athletic participation will be made by the Sports Medicine staff. B. In case of emergency or medical problem outside of the Athletic Training Room hours, contact an Athletic Trainer for assistance or advice immediately. If there is a true emergency or life-threatening situation, dial 911. These problems should be immediately referred to the local hospital. C. IT IS BREWTON PARKER COLLEGE POLICY TO NOT PROVIDE OUTSIDE MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR NON-ATHLETICALLY RELATED INJURIES OR ILLNESSES. IV. Injury and Rehabilitation Documentation A. A Brewton Parker College Certified Athletic Trainer is required to fill out documentation on all injuries and rehabilitative services. The information will be logged within the student athlete s medical file and the electronic medical records program used by the Sports Medicine staff. B. Every student athlete who comes into the Athletic Training Room for treatment, this includes ice bags, stretching, foam rolling, etc., is required to sign into ATS on the computer in the ATR and record anything that is completed. C. All student athletes must notify Brewton Parker Sports Medicine staff of any medication that he/she is taking as soon as prescribed. A copy of the prescription must be kept in the student athlete s medical file. V. Referral and Outside Consultation 3 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

A. The Brewton Parker College Team Physician may determine that further evaluation is needed in the treatment of an injury. Appointments for such referrals will be made by a Brewton Parker College Certified Athletic Trainer. B. All student athletes have the right to gain a second opinion. If a second opinion is sought out, the following steps will be taken before the student athlete is allowed to participate in their respective sport again. 1. The student athlete will not be permitted to participate, after outside consultation, until: A detailed written report has been received from the consulting physician. An evaluation is made by the Sports Medicine staff, and it has been determined that the athlete can demonstrate the necessary skills needed to resume participation. VI. Medical Disqualification A. The Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine staff and Team Physicians reserve the right to medically disqualify a student athlete under NAIA rules. If it has been medically determined that it is unsafe or detrimental to the long term health of a student athlete to continue participation in Intercollegiate Athletics, the Team Physician has ultimate authority to medically disqualify a student athlete from participation. VII. Termination of Participation A. Brewton Parker College is no longer responsible for the care of an injury once an athlete completes their eligibility or has made the decision to no longer participate as a student athlete. This statement holds true unless arrangements have been made prior to the time of termination regarding the care of an injury. VIII. Pregnant Student Athlete A. A student athlete must report her pregnancy to a Team Physician as soon as possible to eliminate any health risks to both the mother and the fetus. All information pertaining to the pregnancy will be treated as a physician and patient confidential transaction. The student athlete, her personal physician, and the Brewton Parker College Team Physician will weigh the danger of athletic participation. If the decision is made to allow the pregnant student athlete to participate, a document of understanding and wavier must be signed. IX. Body Piercing A. Any body piercing (i.e. ears, nose, tongue, belly button, eyebrow, etc ) may not be worn during participation of intercollegiate athletics at Brewton Parker College. Any injury resulting from wearing a piercing is the sole responsibility of the student athlete. X. Nutritional Supplements A. Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine discourages the use of any/all nutritional supplements. If you choose to take a supplement, you acknowledge the risk of losing your eligibility to participate in intercollegiate athletics if you test positive for an NAIA banned substance that may be found in any substance that you may take, regardless of the reason or purpose for taking such supplements. You will be asked to fill out a form 4 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

XI. and disclose all consumed nutritional supplements during your pre- participation physical evaluations. Drug & Alcohol Testing Policy A. Philosophy 1. The use of drugs for any purpose other than medical is considered unethical, unwise, and may be hazardous to the health of the student-athlete. Brewton Parker College is committed to establishing and maintaining a drug-free athletics program. Through drug seminars and RANDOM drug testing, Brewton Parker College will strive to promote and preserve the integrity of athletics and Christian beliefs for the benefit and welfare of the student athletes. B. Purpose 1. The Brewton Parker College Athletic Department Drug Education/Testing Policy has been developed to assist our student athletes in bringing about a drug-free lifestyle. The specific purpose of the policy is to prevent any drug use by Brewton Parker College student athletes. 2. A vital part of the policy is drug screening of all Brewton Parker College student athletes. Prior to testing, a presentation will be made to the athletic teams, explaining the purpose and procedures of the drug screening procedures. The student athlete will be asked to sign a consent form, found within the preparticipation physical evaluation packet, giving the Brewton Parker College Athletic Department permission to randomly administer drug tests. Once consent is given, results will only be known to the Athletic Director, Head Coach, Sports Medicine Staff, the student athlete s parents/guardians, and other Brewton Parker College related personnel. C. Penalties 1. First Offense: Student athlete s parents/guardians will be notified. Student athlete will be indefinitely suspended. Student athlete s athletic scholarship will be terminated. Further discipline may come from the Student Development Department. 2. Refusal to cooperate during testing procedures will result in temporary or permanent suspension from a team and possible loss of athletic scholarship. 3. At any time, the Athletic Department has the right to permanently suspend a student athlete and terminate their athletic scholarship if they violate the student athlete drug policy!! D. The following classes of drugs are banned from Brewton Parker College. A full list of banned substances can t be found anywhere, but is a great resource for banned substances. 1. Stimulants 5 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

About Sickle Cell 1. Sickle cell disease is a serious blood disorder that causes acute pain, severe anemia, infections, and vascular blockages that can lead to widespread organ damage and death. 2. Although Sickle cell trait is most predominant in African-Americans (approximately 10%) and other people of color, persons of all races and ancestry may test positive for sickle cell trait. 3. Sickle cell trait is usually benign, but during intense, sustained exercise, hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in the muscles may cause sickling of red blood cells (red blood cells changing from a normal disc shape to a crescent or sickle shape), which can accumulate in the bloodstream and logjam blood vessels, leading to collapse from the rapid breakdown of muscles starved of blood. 4. Symptoms of sickling of the red blood cells include: 6 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

XIII. Muscle cramping, normally felt within the low back Pain Swelling Weakness Tenderness Fatigue The inability to catch breath B. Sickle Cell Trait Testing 1. The NAIA does not mandate that all NAIA student athletes have knowledge of their sickle cell trait status before the student athlete participates in any intercollegiate sanctioned event, including strength and conditioning sessions, practices, tryouts, scrimmages, competitions, etc., but it is HIGHLY recommended you have yourself tested prior to activities at Brewton Parker College. 2. All student athletes will need to either: Produce proof of being tested Waive their right to testing. This waiver releases Brewton Parker College from liability. Concussion Policy A. Goals of this policy 1. To provide the highest standard of care to date. 2. To prevent 2 nd impact syndrome and prolonged post-concussion symptoms 3. To prevent long term depression, cognitive impairment, dementia, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. B. Definition of Concussion 1. Concussion is defined as a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by traumatic biomechanical forces. May be caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head. Concussion typically results in a rapid onset of short-lived impairment of neurologic function. Concussion may result in neuropathologic changes, but the acute clinical symptoms largely reflect a functional disturbance rather than a structural injury. Concussion results in a graded set of clinical symptoms that may or may not involve loss of consciousness. C. Preseason 1. All student athletes who participate in Men s and Women s Volleyball, Men s and Women s Soccer, Men s and Women s Basketball, Men s and Women s Wrestling, Softball, Baseball, and Dance will be baseline tested using ImPACT. 7 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

2. A new baseline is required from all freshman and transfer student athletes. Baseline testing will be repeated every two years. If a student athlete scores higher on a post-injury test than the original baseline, the highest value will become the new baseline score. D. Signs and Symptoms of Acute Concussion 1. The evaluation of concussion signs and symptoms involves the assessment of a range of domains, including: clinical symptoms, physical signs, behavior, balance, sleep, and cognition. Furthermore, a detailed concussion history is an important part of the evaluation. 2. The presence of the following signs and symptoms may suggest a concussion: Loss of consciousness Seizure or convulsion Amnesia Headache Pressure in the head Neck pain Nausea or vomiting Dizziness Blurred vision Balance problems Sensitivity to light Sensitivity to noise Feeling slowed down Feeling like in a fog Don t feel right Difficulty concentrating Difficulty remembering Fatigue or low energy Confusion Drowsiness More emotional Irritability Sadness Nervous Anxious E. Concussion Evaluation 1. All emergency management and first aid situations will be addressed and ruled out initially. 2. A student athlete with a suspected concussion will be removed from athletic participation immediately and evaluated by the Brewton Parker College Team 8 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

Physician or Athletic Trainer utilizing, but not limited to, the Sideline Assessment portion of the SCAT 5 and SAC test. 3. A student athlete will not be permitted to return to his/her sport the same day if a concussion is suspected or diagnosed. 4. The student athlete will be evaluated by the Team Physician at the earliest convenience. 5. A full SCAT 5 will be performed within hours or the next day that the student athlete returns to class. 6. A post injury ImPACT test will be administered upon the Athletic Trainer s discretion. F. Home Instructions Following Concussion 1. A student athlete with a concussion will be instructed to rest. A student athlete should resume normal activities of daily living as tolerated while avoiding activities that potentially increase symptoms (scholastic work, reading, video games, texting, computer time, TV, ipod/ipad, driving, weight training, and household chores) until symptoms begin to decrease in severity. 2. A student athlete with a concussion should avoid any medication with the exception of acetaminophen unless prescribed by the Team Physician. Student athletes should also avoid ingesting alcohol, illicit drugs, or other substances that might interfere with cognitive function or neurologic recovery. G. Concussion Management 1. The Athletic Trainer will attend the Team Physician clinic visit, if possible, with the student athlete. If unable to attend, the Athletic Trainer will send a PDF copy of the ImPACT baseline test and concussion evaluation form to the Team Physician. The Athletic Trainer will follow-up with the Team Physician as soon as possible after the clinic visit. 2. The Athletic Trainer will communicate with the Academic Advisor for the student athlete about modifications needed during this period as prescribed by the Team Physician. 3. The student athlete will complete a symptom checklist every day until he/she has been fully cleared for participation by the Team Physician. 4. A new ImPACT test will be administered twice a week. 5. The gradual Return to Play (RTP) progression can begin once the athlete is asymptomatic at rest, ImPACT scores return to baseline or higher, and the student athlete no longer requires academic modifications. All three of these requirements must be met before beginning RTP progression. 6. If a student athlete becomes symptomatic during any stage of the RTP progression, he/she must immediately stop the activity for the remainder of the day and regress back to the previous step (that was completed without recurrence of symptoms) the following day, when symptoms have resolved. 7. There will be no return to full practice or play without the Team Physicians clearance. 9 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

XIV. 8. If a student athlete experiences prolonged symptoms or an additional referral is required, the Team Physician will be responsible for this decision. Lightening Policy A. Policy Statement 1. Lightening is a dangerous phenomenon. Athletic teams that practice and compete outdoors are at risk when the weather is inclement. To monitor lightning the Brewton Parker Sports Medicine staff will utilize the General Lightning Seeker Personal Lightning Detector, Weather Bug Spark system and/or Flash-to-Bang Method. Our policy is in accordance with the 2000 National Athletic Trainer s Association Position Statement regarding lightning safety for athletics and recreation. B. Procedure 1. Prior to a game a member of the Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine staff will greet the officials and explain the means in which to monitor the lightning. They will notify the officials during the game if there is an imminent danger from lightning. 2. Once it is determined that there is danger of a lightning strike, a Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine staff member will notify the head coach and/or official and subsequently immediately remove all athletes, coaches, and support staff from the playing field or practice area/facility. All activities will be suspended if lightning is detected within 10 miles with lightning detector or flash-to-bang method. All suspended activities must wait until the lightning detector shows the lightning out of range (10 miles) for the venue. The minimum return time should be 30 minutes after the last lightning strike. 3. All individuals have the right to leave an athletic site, without repercussion or penalty, in order to seek a safe structure or location if they feel they are in danger from impending lightning activity. 4. No one is permitted to use the showers or plumbing facilities and landline telephones during thunderstorm activities. They are permitted to use cellular phones, if needed. C. Safety Tips 1. The safe shelter for all outdoor activities on Brewton Parker College s campus will be inside the gym. 2. There should be no contact with metal objects (bleachers, fences, golf clubs, and bats). 3. Avoid single or tall trees, tall objects, and standing in a group. 4. If there is no shelter you may seek refuge in a hardtop vehicle. It is not the rubber tires that protect from the lightning; it is the hard top metal roof that dissipates the lightning around the vehicle. 5. The existence of blue skies and/or absence of rain are not protection from lightning. Lightning can strike 10 miles from the rain shaft. 6. DO NOT LIE FLAT ON THE GROUND! 10 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

XV. XVI. XVII. 7. Avoid using a landline telephone. Cell phones are a safe alternative if in a safe structure. 8. Avoid standing water and open fields. 9. If in a forest, seek shelter in a low area under a thick grove of small trees. 10. If you feel your skin tingling immediately crouch and grab your legs and tuck your head as described above to minimize your body s surface area. 11. Persons who have been struck by lightning do not carry an electrical charge. Therefore, enact the EMS system and provide emergency care. CPR is what is most often required. If possible, more the victim to a safe location. Emergency Procedures A. Emergency Action Plans are posted at all athletic venues with corresponding emergency telephone numbers, contacts, and directions to said venue. Follow these instructions and inform a member of Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine, if not present. Athletic Equipment Loan Procedure A. If a student athlete is need of a brace, sleeve, crutches, boots, etc. the Brewton Parker College Sports Medicine Staff may decide to loan the needed item. The student athlete will need to fill out the Supply Loan Contract with the Sports Medicine Staff. All items must be returned by the date agreed upon and stated on the contract. If item(s) is/are not returned by stated date, the student athlete has 30 days to return the item(s) back to the Sports Medicine Department without having the cost of the item(s) charged to their school account. B. Prices of Athletic Equipment can be found on the Supply Loan Contract and are as follows: 1. Ace Wrap: $ Crutches: $ Sling: $ Patellar Tendon Strap: $ Tall Boot: $ Thigh Sleeve: $ Tennis Elbow Strap: $ Ankle Brace: $ Knee Sleeve: $ Elbow Sleeve: $ Short Boot: $ Calf Sleeve: $ Neoprene Hip Spica: $50.00 Athletic Training Room Policies A. The Sports Medicine Staff is here to provide care for our student athletes. Proper conduct and respect is expected. B. The Athletic Training Room is a co-educational facility. All student athletes are required to wear shorts and a t-shirt. C. Report all injuries and illnesses to your Athletic Trainer as quickly as possible. 11 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /

D. Be on time for all treatments. Failure to keep appointments will be interpreted as indifference and lack of desire to return quickly to full activity. Reports or tardiness and such indifference will be reported to the respective coaching staff. E. All equipment will be turned on and off by the Sports Medicine staff. NO ONE is to selfadminister treatment. F. All equipment and supplies must remain in the training room unless expressly permitted otherwise by an Athletic Trainer. G. Records of treatment attendance are open to all coaches for review. H. All student athletes MUST shower after practice/workouts before receiving treatment. I. No food or drink is allowed in the Athletic Training Room, except water. J. Cell phones will not be allowed while completing treatment. K. The Athletic Training office is off limits, unless instructed by the Athletic Trainer. L. Headphones are not to be worn while in the Athletic Training Room. M. Clean up after yourselves! The Sports Medicine Staff are not your parents and we do not appreciate having to pick up your messes!!! N. Maintain the Athletic Department s Code of Conduct at all times, including no foul language. 12 P a g e R e v i s e d 7 /
