ZEN BOX PROFILE BOX AUGUST 2017 Your bi monthly ZEN BOX is coming! In this box, you will find: Zen SWEET ORANGE Essential Oil Zen MAGNOLIA Essential Oil Zen ALLERGY & IMMUNE RESPONSE Essential Oil ZEN SWEET ORANGE Let s Learn About Each Essential Oil, and How You Can Use Them! Latin Name: Citrus Sinensis Sourced: Brazil Production: Cold pressed (rind) Sweet Orange is a good basic essential oil for all seasons, but is especially nice in summer! It s a happy familiar scent, bright and pleasant, not medicinal in scent but powerful! In aromatherapy, it unblocks poor energy, supports happiness, soothes the soul, fights negative thoughts or depression, and helps calm the perfectionist who can t tolerate mistakes! Caution: Sweet Orange, like all the citrus essential oils, is photo toxic. That is, don t use it on your skin and then go into the sun. Inhaling is fine.
BACKGROUND & HISTORICAL ANECDOTES: The precise origin of Citrus sinensis has never been established, but many botanists believe it originated somewhere between Southwestern China and the Himalayas and it is among the oldest cultivated fruit! Ancient Chinese literature as long ago as 2400 BC mentioned Sweet Orange. By around 800 AD Arab traders had introduced oranges into eastern Africa and the Middle East. Caribbean! During the 15th century Sweet Orange was introduced into the forest regions of West Africa and Europe by Portuguese travelers who brought them back from Macao, China. The fruit proved very popular and orange groves were soon established to meet a growing demand, and then traders brought them to Europe! Christopher Columbus brought seeds to the In the early 1900 s the perfume industry used vast quantities of this oil in fragrance formulations for soaps, detergents, toiletries and perfumes. (Since then, many companies implemented synthetic copies for the products.) The essential oil has good therapeutic value. SCIENTIFIC: Sweet Orange is great for the liver: the constituent d Limonene can increase the rate of synthesis of glutathione S transferase in the liver. This is an important enzyme in detoxification pathways (Tisserand and Young 2014). Bodake et al. (2002) and Ozbek et al. (2003) noted that d limonene had serious liver protective actions. It has been studied for indigestion as well as inflammation and pain reduction. After Pink Grapefruit, Sweet Orange has the highest level of d limonene, which gives it its superpowers! HOW TO USE: 1) Digestive support: Sweet Orange is one of the best choices in a blend for digestive disorders. We tend to think of Peppermint first (especially for nausea), but Sweet Orange is wonderful too. (And if you don t like the scent of Peppermint, here is a great option. Kids usually like the scent.) It reduces constipation, gas, abdominal spasms, nausea, and vomiting. It s also used for irritable bowel syndrome. Here is a recipe for IBS: 5 drops Orange 5 drops Roman Chamomile 4 drops Bergamot 5 drops Sandalwood
Add to 2 ounces of a nice cream or oil and massage on your tummy and lower back. You could add a drop of Peppermint in, or better yet, diffuse Peppermint while using the recipe on the skin. NOTE: YOU CAN ALSO JUST ADD ORANGE TO YOUR FAVORITE CARRIER & MASSAGE ON YOUR TUMMY! 2) Orange is very useful for pain and inflammation. Inhale, diffuse, add to bath water, or a compress. Orange blends well with Lavender, Geranium, and Peppermint (1 drop each into an ounce of cream or oil) to help reduce inflammation or pain. 3) Kids usually love the smell diffuse it to dispel tantrums or frustrations! While Sweet Orange is uplifting, it also quells stress and helps calm the spirit great for kids. 4) Feeling down? Sweet Orange is an anti depressant. It provides an uplifting and fresh feeling that it adds happiness to your life! 5) Astringent for skin. Many citrus oils, including Orange, can tone the skin and reduce secretions. It s a good one to drop into some witch hazel and lightly smooth on skin with a cotton ball. 6) Immuno stimulant: With its antibacterial, antioxidant actions & anti inflammatory effects, orange essential oil can be used to help support the immune system and promote overall wellbeing. 7) Liver protection! As mentioned, the component d Limonene, key in Sweet Orange, is found to increase function of the liver, helping with detox. The liver constantly works to detox the body and can become overworked. Diffuse when feeling the need, or blend it in your oil or cream to massage on your mid section at a higher dilution that normal. It could also assist with constipation. 8) Mild Aphrodisiac. Sweet Orange has mild aphrodisiac qualities (Other aphrodisiacs are ylang ylang, neroli, rose and lavender.) Create an environment in your bedroom or make your own perfume by blending Sweet Orange into your favorite cream or oil, or on aromatherapy jewelry 9) Mild Anti Spasmodic! Spasms can result in many irritating or serious problems including continuous coughing, convulsions, muscle cramps and extreme diarrhea. To avoid these effects, spasms must be treated early or prevented entirely. This can be done with the help of Sweet Orange essential oil, which relaxes muscular and nervous spasms. Use 6 8 drops in an ounce of cream, and also diffuse. For continuous coughing, you may want to try a steam tent (and add a drop of Cedarwood in as well!)
10) Overall Tonic! Sweet Orange essential oil is one of a select few (such as Frankincense) that can be considered an overall tonic due to its wide range of actions to help strengthen body function, the mind and restore vitality. ZEN MAGNOLIA ESSENTIAL OIL Latin Name: Michelia alba Sourced: China Production: Steam Distilled (Flowers) Magnolia is considered a sacred flower, revered in India for its relaxing and emotional confidence qualities. It is also used in Chinese medicine. In aromatherapy, it is used to calm, soothe the nerves, enhance confidence and is known as a light aphrodisiac! purposes and for antianxiety. Therapeutically, it is used to treat urinary tract infections, relieve allergy symptoms, help sinuses, moisten dry skin, as an emollient, febrifuge (bring down fever), for antibacterial We use it in our popular Zen Air Bliss, and in the Zen Soothe & Purify Blend. It s high in Linalool (65%) so have great anti bacterial qualities, anti inflammation as well as anti stress think of Lavender, also high in linalool! A FEW HISTORICAL ANECDOTES: Magnolia is a very ancient genus, known through fossilized finds from the Tertiary Period! Appearing before bees did, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. Magnolias have been officially cultivated in Asia since the 7 th Century, though therapeutic uses started around They were brought to Europe in 1780, and then eventually to the Americas. The magnolia tree can live to be 80 to 100 years old. HOW TO USE: 1) Breathe in or diffuse your Magnolia. It can bring down the stress or anxiety of a room, help with calmness and create a relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere. (It will also kill bacteria, great if someone is sick in the home.) 2) Use it on your aromatherapy jewelry (bracelet or necklace.) It is so pleasant and calming yet a deep beautiful scent to enjoy!
3) Anti inflammatory Mix 6 7 drops in an ounce of cream or gel and use on inflamed areas. You can also create your own night cream with 5 drops (and a drop of Frankincense) to use at night (the emollient qualities will also help moisturize.) 4) Fever? While Lemongrass, Lemon and a few other essential oils are often thought of for bringing down fever, Magnolia can also do this. Put 5 to 7 drops in a dish of cold water, swish your compress or washcloth in the bowl, wring and put on hot forehead or body. Or use in a cool bath. Can also be used in a sponge bath on the body. Avoid eyes, of course! 5) Suffer from Allergies or have Inflamed Sinuses and Congestion? There are a number of essential oils that are excellent for allergies of different types. Magnolia is one to try use in your inhaler, diffuser or breathe deeply from the bottle. It is also well known in Chinese medicine to help with congestion and sinus issues. Inhale, do a steam tent, diffuse. 6) Urinary Tract Infection? We recommend trying Magnolia and Bergamot in a sitz bath (4 5 drops each); you can also add 4 drops of Magnolia and 4 of Bergamot to a cream and massage on your lower abdomen. Diffuse it, too, for added help! 7) Feeling a little depressed? Diffuse or inhale Magnolia to set you right! 8) Liver protection. There is some ongoing research that the component Linalool (high in Magnolia) can help protect the liver and may help decrease liver cancer. The research is early but the research so far is promising. ZEN ALLERY & IMMUNE RESPONSE ESSENTIAL OIL BLEND Shake the bottle before use to be sure all the essential oils and carrier oil are blended! This blend helps fight against hay fever, allergies, sinus problems and seasonal changes. Here are the essential oils in this blend and why I chose them for your blend: Certified Organic Jojoba Oil & Sunflower Oil as the carrier oils for topical use.
