Medicinal Properties of Reishi & An Experiment in Growing and Using Reishi Mshrooms for Immnity by Camilla Padgitt-Coles The Fngs Among Us ITP-NYU Spring 2018
Medicinal Properties of Reishi: Scientific Research Reishi has shown that it has over a hndred different polysaccharides which enhance immne fnction They plg into and connect with macrophages in the immne system which digest these polysaccharides then distribte them throgh the rest of the immne system so that they get the benefits from them Over 119 triterpene componds which preglate the intelligence and fnction of of macrophages and lymphocytes and natral killer cells, and the whole range of immne cells Reishi s vast triterpene complex it has 2 componds in particlar called Ganoderic and Ganoderenic acids which have shown awesome reslts in treating atoimmne diseases and allergies
Medicinal Properties of Reishi: Scientific Research (cont d - part 2) Most known for spporting and enhancing liver fnction and allowing it to assimilate, store and se ntrients, as well as spporting its natral detoxification process Protects from free-radical damage, and cell repair Anti-inflammatory (in tinctre form with alcohol) Natral treatment for asthma and bronchitis and other lng-related isses Tonic for the kidneys and heart (redce diastolic pressre flowing towards the heart) ths a sccessfl cardiovasclar medicine (More simply: Redces blood pressre)
Scientific Research (cont d - part 3) Anti-viral (Can inhibit the replication of the HIV virs) Anti-cancer (Can inhibit tmor growth as well as improve immne system fnction) Pal Stamets: stdies have ascertained that the primary anti-tmor effects of Ganoderma lcidm are from a biological response modification of the host Reishi s polysaccharides cased by a 5 to 29 fold increase in tmor necrosis factors and that the polysaccharides of Ganoderma lcidm significantly inhibited the growth of lekemia cells, a niqe beta glcan mycelim enhanced the prodction of nitric oxides from macrophages bt decreased other free radicals and the collateral harm that they cased to healthy cells. This mechanism was frther elcidated and showed that tmor necrosis factors were released by macrophages eight hors after exposre to derivatives of mshroom polysaccharides targeting canceros cells followed for hors later by a brst of nitric oxide which then killed the diseased cells. Pal Stamets, MycoMedicinals : an Informational Treatise on Mshrooms ^ Polysaccharide Reishi as an Adaptogen Reishi is an adaptogen, which means it is able to go into the body, srvey what is needed, and work specifically on those areas. Sorce: Health Benefits of Reishi Mshroom
Beliefs Srronding Reishi s Metaphysical Properties Throghot antiqity Reishi was always known as the herb of spirital potency becase of its ability to calm the mind and nervos system and help create more of a sense of innerpeace throgh consistent, long term se. It is also believed to improve memory and increase focs and concentration and therefore enhance or ability to embrace new experiences and learn from them. This is really why it is nderstood to be a spirital catalyst. Montain sages, yogis and monks all appreciated Reishi becase of this, and believed that it worked on the hman psyche in mch the same way as it does in its natral ecosystem. Reishi is a saprophyte, which means it grows on dead and decaying organic matter and accelerates the process of converting this dead matter into beneficial ntrients that benefit the ecosystem. Inside the hman organism Reishi is believed to rapidly spport the breakdown of habital tendencies and repetitive behavioral patterns that no longer spport or development, and in doing so retrns them as active fertiliser to the soil of or being. In more contemporary circles this reptation still persists. It is actally qite difficlt to come across people that have not had this kind of experience when sing Reishi for a while the calming effects that place it as one of the primary anti-stress herbs of or time, and these effects are cmlative, so they do tend to gain momentm as time passes. Sorce:
The Cost-Effectiveness of Bying Reishi Prodcts Vs Making Yor Own Commercially available prodcts: Pal Stamets Reishi Host Defense: $20 for 30 capsles DailyNtra Mshroom Defense Formla $30 for 90 capsles/2 capsles per daily dose (lasts roghly one and a half months) Powders: Range widely in price and amont arond $15-$25 for doses a bag bt argably weaker depending on the kind (however yo can make instant tea or mix into beverages or food easily.) Blk Spplements: Natre Restore: Where was it grown? What was it grown on? Is it organic? If it is from a pollted environment it will absorb heavy metals, radiation, contamination, etc. If yo make it yorself yo can be sre of what it absorbed. Unfortnately a lot of companies are not clear abot what their powder is or isn t made from. Sorce: Mshroom Powders vs. Extracts: What s The Difference? (See next slide for the alternatives)
Where to find Reishi mshrooms? Find them growing in the wild (mine were foraged by a friend in pstate New York) Grow yor own at home (see photo on the left) (I boght this kit for $25 to try growing them in the ftre and will see how many it yields ) Order dried Reishi online: Arond $20/lb = ~5 months worth of daily immnological effects)
Medicinal Effects of Reishi Tea The benefits of this tea come from water-solble polysaccharides known as beta-glcans. These molecles are thoght to: Stimlate the immne system to fight infection and foreign cells Inhibit tmor growth Lower blood pressre Stabilize blood sgar Can also mix the tea with: Coffee (helps with adrenal fatige cased by caffeine consmption) Sops (se as stock) Jice or smoothies (helps with taste) Ginger, honey, green tea, cocont sgar, yor sweetener of choice.
Making Reishi Tea Step 1: Choosing the amont. (Reishi tea only lasts for a few days in the refrigerator. A tinctre can last for years potentially.) Arond 3 grams of Reishi (or one heaping tablespoon of ct p or grond pieces) with 4 to 5 cps of prified water (will boil down) eqals one dose. One large dried Reishi mshroom = many daily doses worth (I didn t have a scale)
Making Reishi Tea Step 2: Ct the mshroom (or rip it into smaller pieces it can be hard to ct!)
Making Reishi Tea Step 2: Boil the Reishi Add mshroom pieces to boiling water, cover, and simmer for two hors. Boiling is necessary to break down the celllar walls or Chitin of the Reishi and release the healing benefits.
Other medicinal mshrooms: Chaga Shiitake Maitake Trkey Tail Cordyceps Frther research:
